Universal Theme: While the theme of a novel,

poem, play, etc.. Is often expressed as a general statement about life, universal themes are widely held ideas about life.

Theme Versus Subject: The subject of a work might be

love; the theme would be what the writer says about love

Question: Looking carefully at your assigned

section, analyze the literary/poetic techniques used by the poet to characterize Beowulf, Grendel, Grendel’s mother, the Danes, and the Geats; how does the poet convey meaning and universal theme?

Homework: Compose three level 2 questions and

three level 3 questions from the excerpts we have read from Beowulf. Be ready to turn them in at the beginning of class. These will be topics for our Socratic Seminar.
