BASICS OF CAMERA TECHNIQUES

. Camera Shots• There are 3 main types of shots• Long shot.• Medium shot.• Close-up shot.

Long shot

• A long shot is used to show the full human figure and often provides a clear view of the environment or setting where we find the character.

• Also called FULL SHOT / ESTABLISHING SHOT

Long shot tells a lot about the condition of the subject and the place he is in, focus is on one subject

very long shot, here one subject is not the focus

Extreme long shot- landscapes

Medium shot• A medium shot shows the human body

from mid-waist or mid-thigh up and is often used to show interaction between two or more characters. A medium shot shows the subject in relation to its immediate surroundings.

Medium shots

Medium shots

• Your own passport size photos are medium shots

CLOSE UPS

• In close-ups, we can understand how a character feels.

• IT is about emotions, nearness to subject.

• It tells a lot of details

happiness

sad

MORE EXAMPLES -Close shot

MORE KIND OF SHOTS

• OTS SHOT• TYPES OF SHIOTS RELATED TO

CAMERA HEIGHT• 1- LOW ANGLE • 2-HIGH ANGLKE• 3-EYE LENGHT

OTS SHOT- extension of medium shot

Use of OTS• The second most common shot used was an

over the shoulder shot, focusing on one persons reaction. This is useful to see what the actor sees, putting the   audience in their position. As you can see, this shot helps to show expression and response, the camera focused on the rule of thirds making the actor the only possible thing for the audience to focus on. Used in interviews.

Used in interview( esp in video cameras)

SHOTS BASED ON HEIGHT OF THE CAMERA

• HIGH ANGLE SHOT

• LOW ANGLE SHOT

• EYE LEVEL SHOT.

EYE LEVEL SHOT- HEIGHT OF CAMERA AS SAME AS THAT OF SUBJECT

HIGH ANGLE SHOT

HIGH ANGLE SHOT- gives an impression on looking down on the subject, avoid such photos when you want to show respect to children, beggars , elderly.

HIGH ANGLE SHOT

• Although it wasn’t commonly used, a high angle shot was brought it to show a whole view of the scene helping to portray the location

ETHICS

• Do not treat people as if they are things while photographing .

• Do not invade anybody’s privacy except when it is necessary for depicting certain social situations.

• Ask for permission when coming near to subject

Treat all subjects with respect and dignity. Give special consideration to vulnerable subjects and compassion to victims of crime or tragedy. Intrude on private moments of grief only when the public has an overriding and justifiable need to See.

GIVE YOUR SUBJECT SPACE TO LOOK INTO

LOOKING ROOM

If the person (and it works with animals too) you are photographing is looking in one direction or even if their head is pointing in that direction it is best to place them on the opposite side of the frame.

Looking room is the space between the subject's face and the edge of the screen. More specifically, looking room is the space on the side the subject is looking toward.

The looking room rule is this: There should always be a little MORE room on the side the subject is looking toward.

Headroom: Enough room for the subject's head. Space around their head yet not too much. Correct headroom gives the subject just enough space around their head to make them look comfortable.
