We believe that a great defensive football team is based upon sound defensive

philosophy. The coaches and players must believe in it and stick with it. We will notbe a great defensive team by changing our philosophy from week to week or at mid-season. You came out for football at Amityville High School to play as a winner and be achampionship team. No team will reach this goal unless it commits itself to playingtough defense! Defense sets the tone for the entire team.

We believe that our defensive philosophy, if carried out by our coaches and players, will make us the kind of defensive team necessary to reach that goal. Only playerscommitted to our philosophy will play. Only players that can be counted on will play.Part of being counted on is doing the right thing in the classroom and in the community.

If you have the pride and self-discipline to commit to the goal, then you will bepart of a great defensive team and will be a proud member of the Warrior defense.

To be a part of the Warrior defense you must take pride in knowing and doing yourassignment and playing within the system. To play the aggressive style of attacking

defense that we do, each individual defensive player must take pride and commit

themselves to always playing full-speed , running  and pursuing  to thefootball relentlessly, and must commi t themselves to being great tacklers causingturnovers and finishing plays. When each individual on defense commits themselves to

this we will then have the caliber of defense, hence the season that we expect.

Defensive Philosophy

Defensive Philosophy

1. Pursuit

2. Physicality

3. TNT

4. Know Your Stuff

5. Communicate6. Have Fun

7. No Excuses

Pursuit

Pursuit is the burning  desire  to get to thefootball. Pursuit separates an average defense into agood defense and a good defense into a greatdefense.

Why You Must Pursue   You create turnovers

prevent long plays by great pursuit by your defensivelinemen and backside players.

It wears down the other team, it makes them say wowI can not believe how hard this team plays

It creates Highlight Level plays and Hits

Most Importantly: It Wins games

8/3/2019 Amityville_30_Nickle

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/amityville30nickle 5/54

WHAT IT TAKES TO PURSUE:

1. Mental Toughness and the willingness to hustle each andevery play

2. Visualize pursuing and making great plays

3. Physical conditioning is necessary so that you can have greatpursuit on every play.

HOW TO PURSUE:1. Play technique and gap responsibility first

2. Take correct course (pursuit angle) to the ball that willput you in a good position for cutback.

3. Never follow the same colored jersey

4. You have to want to be first to the ball.

Communicate

1. Talk to each other Echo Calls- repeat sideline calls,No Secrets let your teammates know what you see orwhat you feel is comingCongratulate- If a teammate makes a good play let

him know about it, get excited.Trash talking- Do not talk to the other team it isclassless and makes it looks like an accident that youmade a good play.

2. Talk with the coaches

Tell coaches what you see, individual match-ups andwhat is working.Players need to communicate with coaches about anyoff field problems. We are here to help!!!!

No Excuses

Excuses are for bad players, bad teams andlosers.

Winners do not complain or explain.Complaining is embarrassing

Only worry about what you can control notthings that you can not; officials, weather ,etc.

If you make a mistake learn from it do notblame any one but yourself.

The highest compliment a man can be given isthat he is a stand up man.

If you made a mistake stand up to it

Defensive Goals Cause 3 turnovers per game. Hold the other team under 200 yards total. Hold the other team under 100 yards rushing.  Allow less than 3.5 yards per carry. Hold the other team under 100 yards passing.  Allow below 50% completion rate. Knockdown the opposing QB at least 5 times a game. Have at least 4 TFL’s  Commit less than 3 penalties per game Have 50% stops on third and short.

Score points on defense or give the offense the ball on the +25in each game Out physical our opponent No big plays after a turnover or a change of possesion Pursue for 32 minutes

The defensive player’s down hand should be even with O Lineman’sShoulder. This can be modified with a tight and loose designation

For Linebacker Alignments just add a zero to the alignment

Example the Mac playing head up the Guard would be a 20 technique

Pre Snap Movement and

ShiftingPre-snap Movement: This is very important to ourstyle of play. It consists of misaligning or faking a stunt thenright before the snap moving into your proper alignment. This is something that must be continually worked on. The

more movement we can give the offense before the snap themore confused they will be on their blocking assignments. Dbacks need to do this as well, showing zone and stepping upinto man or showing bump and bailing before the snap

Shifting: This is done by showing one defensive front oranother then just before the snap the Mac will yell move thenthe defense shifts to the new front. We will always movefrom base to the other defense called

Zone Coverage Get to your coverage responsibilities fast, head on a swivel, then hunt

up receivers, finally find the QB’s eyes.  Do not cover grass find a receiver and cover through your zone with

out compromising your zone. Intimidate receivers don’t allow people to move freely through your

zone. Hit them as long as that ball is not in the air Know the field, do not drop to areas that can’t be threatened by

alignment Run to the football. Punish the receiver. If a ball is caught our goal is for three people to

hit the receiver as close to the catch as possible. Zone Defense is an ATTITUDE set the tone when playing it.

Communication is a must!!

Man Coverage Man Coverage allows us to load the Box. Have pride in

your ability to cover man. It gives us a distinct advantageas a defense. Play the technique that you are taught. It will put you in

the best possible position. Never give up on a play even if you are beat or they make

a catch. You can still make something happen.  Attack your receiver, be Physical while playing Bump. Use your hands. Play position, know where you need to be and get there.  Accept the Challenge, step up to the plate and don’t allow

your man to make a catch. Have confidence in yourabilities.

Be an athlete if a ball is thrown your way go get it. Have a short memory, the only important play is the next

play

Smash

Smash is a concept that we will abide to

while playing man to man coverage. Simply put;

smash means that if your guy stays in to block yourush the passer and attempt to put your man intothe face of the Quarterback

Bump and RunWhy Play Bump and Run?

1. Disrupt the timing of QB and Receiver

2. Control the routes we will see

3. Enable us to pressure the QB and be even more diverse

4. Negates WR speed5. Entire team will benefit from aggressiveness

6. Force the wr to work hard each snap

7. Not many teams run it so it will be hard for other teams

to prepare against it

8/3/2019 Amityville_30_Nickle

http://slidepdf.com/reader/full/amityville30nickle 25/54

Keys to playing Bump and Run

1. Can not get beat inside

2. Eliminate false steps, step with inside foot, andbe ready to backpedal quick

3. Initial bump is with outside arm, this enables

us too open our hips and run with the receiver4. There is no bump if receiver releases outside(

that is what we want)

5.

Perfect defending the fade route- (alwaysmaintain hand placement on inner leg of wr)

6. To be an excellent Bump team it must bedrilled on a continuous basis
