A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEOANN-MAREE DAVIS

Welcome to the Spring Edition of the Amicus Exchange! It has been a very busy three months as you will see from our newsletter with lots of personal achievements during that time.

Over the next few months we will be spending some time collecting some of these great stories on DVD and sharing them on our facebook page, youtube and website – so keep an eye out!

From an organisational perspective we have completed our new Strategic Plan and we thank all participants, families and staff who assisted us to develop the plan. We have five goals that we are working on over the next three years which are:

1. Deliver high quality and flexible services that meet the individual needs of participants.

2. Encourage, empower and build the capacity of participants to direct their own lives.

3. Be our community’s leading advocate for full inclusion of people with disabilities and vulnerable youth.

4. Improve our organisational systems and support our people to do their best work.

5. Build a strong financial base that provides for investment in new and innovative services for participants.

Given how much change has occurred with the implementation of the NDIS and other sector reforms, this Strategic Plan has a very important role to play in ensuring that we can support participants and families to build capacity and knowledge in navigating the change.

There is important work that will be undertaken to provide community education and advocacy around the importance of inclusion. The plan will also guide Amicus as an organisation in building our capacity to continue to deliver services, one person at a time, and develop new and innovative services.

We also took the opportunity while we were reviewing our plan to slightly amend our Vision and Mission to ensure that they give a clear message about what we are aiming to achieve at Amicus.

Our new vision is:

A community that welcomes everyone for who they are and what they bring.

Our new purpose is:

Supporting people with a disability or disadvantage of all ages to live their good life.

Our values remain unchanged as we think that they capture what is important to us and the way that we work.

Just a brief update on upcoming events:

• A Family Fun Day will be held at Crook St Park as part of our birthday celebrations on Saturday 20 October.

• An Open Day will be held at Melissa Court in Castlemaine on the same date.

• A Gala 30th Birthday Night will be held at Silks, Bendigo Racecourse on Saturday 3 November, we will be launching our book on this night as well.

• Our AGM will be held on Tuesday 13 November, 2pm at Bendigo TAFE Health and Community Centre of Excellence.

You will find further details on all of these events and how to register in the newsletter and we hope that you can join us!

Last but not least our subdivision at Cecil St is now awaiting titles to be issued which are expected sometime in October. Looking forward to sharing news of all of these great events in our final edition of the Amicus Exchange for 2018 due in December.

PARTICIPANT UPDATESPETER AT PEPPERGREEN AND NEW WORK AT THE COMPLETE GARDEN

JO HOGG

Peter has recently commenced working at The Complete Garden. It started with Peter asking the Store owner Annie Matheson if he could turn some water features on. He now also tops them up with water to ensure the pumps don’t run while dry as well as feeding the fish, sweeping the floor and other tasks as required.

Peter helped set up a new water feature and get it started. Peter has a lot of pride in his work and is encouraged strongly by Annie. His regular mornings for this are Monday and Wednesday. It is a very pleasant work environment with many inspiring gift ideas for the house and garden. Go Peter!!

For the past month, Peter has also been attending Peppergreen Farm. Peter has shown a keen interest in gardening, and in particular lawn mowing. Over the weeks, Peter has participated in:• planting and maintaining cuttings

• pruning

• painting

• lawn mowing

Lee from Peppergreen Farm has been a great mentor and it’s wonderful to see Peter achieving his goals.

This month Jo Hogg supported by Rodney Carter, explored the mechanics of Timber Kit Automata (mechanical toys with moving parts) and here is the finished product.A fine effort Jo!

Look forward to seeing you build other things in the future. Who knows where this could go?

DIDOY

SAY DIAYA HTOO

HAPPY BIRTHDAY GLEN!

A WOOLLY VISITOR

Didoy attended his Deb Ball on Friday the 14th September. His mum was so very proud of him and he was supported by Cameron, Jack and Luke P.

It was an awesome achievement for Didoy and a wonderful night.

Amicus is supporting a number of new Australians with a disability from the Karen community to become actively involved in Bendigo life.

One young man, Say Diaya Htoo has been supported to obtain his learner driver licence with the assistance of Amicus staff member Kwa Ka Tu Soe by learning Australia’s road laws by interpreting the VicRoads Book and via online practise.

Participant Glen Bailey celebrated his 62nd Birthday at Mad Cow Cafe on August 16.

The Mad Cow staff very kindly provided Glen with a chocolate birthday cake. His favourite AFL team was fairly obvious from his birthday attire!

Glen enjoyed the morning, and had a visit from his sister at his residence later in the day.

Team member Mellissa Cavender fostered an orphan lamb (Moses) and our participants, Jo Dwyer and Joseph loved cuddling and feeding little Moses his formula.

Melissa Court is a Respite House run by Amicus located 5km out of Castlemaine on the Newstead Rd.

It’s a beautiful purpose built four-bedroom property on acreage, surrounded by lovely gardens with birds frequenting. The house was built by a group of amazing local people in Castlemaine who were concerned that people with disabilities didn’t have anywhere to use locally for respite or as a place to support them in independent living skill development.

Amicus has a team of about 15 staff who work at Melissa Court, with Team Leader Alex Bonani. Some Amicus participants utilise Melissa Court but it is available to a wide range of people. There will be an OPEN DAY at Melissa Court on Saturday 20th October, so look out for more information on our Facebook page if you’d like to pop in and visit.

We have had our first three staff members (team 14) successfully complete the top up trauma units for Disability out of home care providers caring for children on voluntary child care agreements who are required to hold registration as a Community Service Provider (out of home care) under the Children, Youth and Families Act 2005. There is another course being offered in Bendigo:

Day 1 and 2 Thursday and Friday 25th and 26th October

Day 3 and 4 Thursday and Friday 8th and 9th November
