WITH HUNDREDS OF WOOD SAMPLES 43. houGh, romeyn. The American Woods, Exhibited by Actual Specimens and with Copious Explanatory Text. Parts I-XII only (of eventually 14). Each volume comprised of text booklet in wrappers, plus wood samples on card mounts, loose as issued. 295 (of 304) mounts, numbered 1-300, with additional plates 7a, 7b, 26a & 62a. Each mount displays three specimens from a species of tree in transverse, radial and tangential sections. 9x6”. Card mounts housed in blind-stamped green cloth chemises with printed inside covers, original blindstamped slipcases, most with clasps still present. Second edition of Parts I-III, First Edition of parts IV-XII.

Lowville, NY: Published by the Author, 1893-1911

One of the greatest American works on trees and woods, it is: “illustrated by actual specimens, and being in this way an exhibition of nature itself. It possesses a peculiar and great interest never found in a press-printed book” (Hough). Romeyn B. Hough prepared the samples

himself and self-published the work. It provides a unique record of American wood types, arranged geographically. Several parts in this section cover California and the Pacific Slope. This is a tremendously important work for ecologists as well as connoisseurs of American furniture and antiques. Each specimen is about 2x4½” in size and cut thinly enough to be partially translucent. This set is only very rarely found complete, presumably because it was published over a span of 40 years. Ex-library from the Library of California Polytechnic School, San Luis Obispo, with bookplates, institutional ink stamps, and small hand-written “C.P.S.” in white on each card and at head of slipcase spines. Varying wear to slipcases, Part XII with some rippling to cloth, a few parts lacking all or part of the closing clasps; chemise of Part VII lacking cloth backstrip. Text booklet lacking from Part VII, front wrapper detached on text booklet of Part I. Lacking 9 card mounts (#s 13, 17, 130, 135, 160, 184, 200, 228, 232); 2 mounts lacking one specimen (#s 55, 282); approximately 15 specimens with large chips or substantial portions lacking; a number of other samples with cracking or small chips; overall very good.

“This famous treatise... was at first intended to bear a title indicating a study of the fauna of King George’s dominions in North America. However, about this time the American colonies separated from the mother country, and the author adopted the above rather misleading caption.” -- Wood. “Pennant also had a talent for observation and organization. He was able to combine his own observations with information from Thomas Hutchins, Ashton Blackburn, Alexander Garden, Benjamin Smith Barton, and Peter Simon Pallas, and thus to produce his classic work, ‘Arctic Zoology.’” DSB X, page 509. of van Houtte. The plant was grown from seed at Chatsworth in February 1850, and arrived in Ghent on 26 May 1850, growing vigorously until the late autumn, with the first flower blooming on 5th September 1850: probably the first time the plant flowered on the mainland of Europe. The plates include three hand-colored studies of stages of the opening of the flowers, a hand-colored plate showing details of various parts of the plant and flower, a hand-colored view of the interior of the

glass-house with the public viewing the plant in full-bloom and two tinted lithographic views of the various glass-houses at the “Etablissement van Houtte.” Some wear to box; wrappers with some chipping at edges; occasional light marginal soiling to plates; very good.

NEARLY 3000 COLORED BOTANICAL PLATES 80. soWerBy, James, & James eDWarD smith. English Botany; or, Coloured Figures of British Plants, with their Essential Characters, Synonyms, and Places of Growth. To which will be added, Occasional Remarks. 40 volumes in 30, including the four supplements. The first 36 volumes are bound from the original parts into 26 volumes, not in order of issue, but according to type of plant, with 11-page manuscript “order of arrangement” list bound in at the front of Vol. I. With 2,960 hand-colored engraved plates, including 2,592 plates in the main work (issued 1790-1814) and 368 plates in the four supplemental volumes (issued 1831-1849); accompanying letterpress descriptions. 9¼x5½, 19th century uniform ful polished green calf ruled in gilt, spines elaborately tooled in gilt, raised bands, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

London: 1790-1849

Striking, unusual and rather ingenious presentation of Sowerby’s English Botany, beautifully bound. The various categories of plants, issued at random over some 25 years, have been categorized and bound according to type, with each plate numbered on the facing letterpress description. Thus the normal complement of 36 volumes (40, including the later supplements) has been reduced to 26, plus the added supplements, but the set is complete with all the plates. There are occasional scholarly ink notes in the margins. The volume numbers on the title-pages have been “tweaked” with paper onlays. With the bookplates of Henry Collins. A few minor scuffs to spines, several ends nicked with one chipped, front joint of one of the supplements cracked, a little shelf rubbing to some covers; some fairly minor foxing within, near fine to fine condition, a beautiful set.

Official account of James Cook’s third and final voyage, relating the expedition in which the Sandwich Islands [now Hawaiian Islands] were discovered. Cook would be killed by the initially friendly natives of Hawaii. Also, in Cook’s search for the Northwest Passage, he surveyed the straits between Asia and America and ascertained the proximity between them, and there is much information on the northwest coast of North America, Alaska, Kamchatka, and other northern climes. The first two volumes were the work of Cook himself, the third was completed by Captain James King. The publication of this official account was much delayed, and, according to Holmes, “it was so eagerly awaited by the public that it was sold out on the third day after publication”. Forbes declares the work to be “arguably the single most important book on the Hawaiian Islands” which “documents all aspects of Hawaiian culture at the point of discovery by Europeans.” Covers rubbed, edges worn; internal offset from the plates, lacking two plates (views of Hawaii and a chart of Hawaii), some internal aging and foxing, good, sold as is.

(8vo) 8¾x5½, period half calf and marbled boards, rebacked with original spine laid down. First Edition, House Issue.

Washington: Blair and Rives, 1845

The first portion of the work reprints Fremont’s report of 1843, covering his 1842 expedition to the Rocky Mountains, the second portion records his expedition of 1843-1844, delineating the major sections of the route subsequently followed by thousands of Oregon immigrants. Wheat describes the map at great length, and attaches great importance to it: “The year 1845, however, though otherwise somewhat cartographically barren, because of a single event is in fact one of the towering years in the story of Western Cartography. In that year John C. Fremont’s report of his journey to Oregon and California in 1843-44 was published. This report and the Fremont (Preuss) map which accompanied it, changed the entire picture of the West, and made a lasting contribution to cartography...” The map is somewhat darkened, small tears at the folds, as usual, stain in the Pacific Ocean portion. Honolulu: July 10th, 1908

Dr. Moore begins by bemoaning the coming of the Great White Fleet, due in less than a week, “The town is blossoming out in flags, bunting, card-sharps and buncoes generally from the U.S. I had nearly forgotten that there were such a lot of d-d rascalls loose. They mostly came down in the steerage, I hope they will go back that way or in a box...” Later he writes of the death of Prince David Kawananakoa, heir to the line of Queen Lili’uokalani, who had died in San Francisco in the beginning of June, “I am sending you a photo of the lying-in-state of one of the Princes who died at the Coast... He was a decent chap, rather thin as to grey matter, and that inclined to soften. They didn’t do a thing to him when he came here, I stood guard fourteen hours, in four hour spells of thirty minutes relief, from four the eight. The wailing and evidences of old royalty days was really impressive...” Fine condition.

134. (Hawaii) steVens, John l. Autograph Letter signed by John L. Stevens, former American Minister to Hawaii, predicting the Hawaiian Islands would soon be part of the United States. 28 lines, in ink, on 1st 2 pp. of 4-page lettersheet of lined paper. 20.5x12.5 cm. (8x5”).

Augusta, ME: March 12, 1894

Significant letter by the leader of the 1893 coup that temporarily deposed the Hawaiian government. John L. Stevens, U.S. Minister to the Hawaiian Islands, supported a group of American businessmen in Hawaii who seized control of the Islands with the backing of American troops sent ashore by Stevens from a warship in Honolulu Harbor. But when Grover Cleveland assumed the U.S. presidency shortly thereafter, he reinstated the Queen, and recalled Minister Stevens from Hawaii and forced him into retirement. Stevens writes to noted autograph collector Harry E. Burbank. “I am confidant that at no distant day Hawaii will become a part of the United States. It is American in its sympathies and interests, its best brain and education are American, and best future interests of the United States demand that it shall become an American possession under the flag and laws of the country and people that have taken such a deep interest in the welfare and destiny of the Hawaiian Islands for more than seventy years.” The former minister viewed President Cleveland’s opposition as a transient, if not irrelevant, phenomenon. The Queen was soon force to abdicate by American businessmen, and in 1898 the islands were annexed by the U.S. Some damage to blank page 4 from earlier mounting, else fine.

London: John Stockdale, 1787

The first edition was published privately by Jefferson when he was the American minister in Paris (1785); it was followed by another French edition (1786) and this London (1787) edition before it was first printed in America. The advertisement to this work on [A]2r states that the Notes are “now offered to the public in their original form and language” for the first time, considering the alterations that were necessary for publication in France. This worked established Jefferson’s reputation as a competent scientist. Jefferson patriotically negated the theories of certain French naturalists that animal and intellectual life in America is somehow degenerate. Howes J78; Sabin 35897. Binding heavily worn, covers detached, evidence of old crude repairs, text block split in two pieces, some foxing, a few ink notes; worthy of restoration.

First Edition.

Philadelphia: W.B. Selheimer, 1869

This is one of the rare special copies with the twenty photographic images. It is an important and early railroad item, and also contains the first narrative of a white man to cross the Grand Canyon. James White was the sole survivor of his party, and his account first appears here. Photographically, the book is important for being (if not the first) a very early use of artotypes. The photographs, which are all credited to Gardner, actually include pictures by Bell and probably one or two stock shots. (See Mangan, Colorado on Glass). The photographs in this copy are quite light, either the way there were printed, or because of fading. Some copies contained 3 maps in addition to the profile, others only one; this has only the profile. Graff 3177; Howes P54; Sabin 58383. Top corner of title-page chipped; folding profile split in two, a few tape repairs and partial crease tears; very good.

CONSIGNING BOOKS TO PBA GALLERIESThe first step in consigning to PBA is to contact the Galleries, either by phone, fax, email or letter. It can then be determined whether the item or items under consideration would do well at auction. Following this, arrangements can be made for the delivery of the material to PBA. In the case of large consignments or libraries, a member of the staff may be able to view the books on location, and make arrangements for its transportation to PBA Galleries. Because of the costs involved, PBA discourages consignments with a total value of less than $1500.The frequency of auctions, and variety of subject matter, allows PBA Galleries to ensure quick turn-around time for items consigned. Books can appear at auction as quickly as 30 days and generally not more than 90 days following consignment. Commissions vary between 10% and 15%, depending on the selling price of an item. These commissions encompass all related costs including insurance, storage, cataloguing, illustrations, etc., except shipping. Payment is sent within 20 banking days of an auction.
