Like so many others, we ask: What are we doing here? Does it really matter? And how can we help? Like others, I have been listening to students’ concerns, counseling and encouraging them as best I can. I tell them two things I have learned: (1) that it is easy to make things worse, whether with unkindness or with explosives, but it is hard, it takes time and patience, to make things better. And (2) that what each of us does, even facing over- whelming difficulties, makes a real difference, because we are not alone. Even as I find comfort and consolation in the beauty and order of Greek and Latin poetry, I am reminded once again of how unforcedly my beloved authors address our deep- est, most abiding concerns. My Euripides class, at ten yesterday morning, thought about Hippolytus, Phaedra, and the loss of innocence at Athens (and in America). My comedy and satire class (in translation, at two) talked about Bdelycleon’s and Aristophanes’ failure to improve human nature, and about the gifts of resilience and laughter that The Wasps conveys. In between, and most ironically, I was teaching the section of Aeneid 1 where Aeneas en- courages his dispirited followers (O socii...), telling them to hang in there and look to better days: ironically, be- cause of the narrator’s subsequent comment, Talia voce refert curisque ingentibus aeger spem vultu simulat, premit altum corde dolorem. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

After Tuesday’s horrors, only four days ago, I find my-self thinking of Edgar’s funereal lines at the end of Lear:

“The weight of this sad time we must obey,Speak what we feel, not what we ought to say....”

It is the old call, to reflection. Like so many others, weask: What are we doing here? Does it really matter? Andhow can we help?

Like others, I have been listening to students’ concerns,counseling and encouraging them as best I can. I tell themtwo things I have learned: (1) that it is easy to make thingsworse, whether with unkindness or with explosives, butit is hard, it takes time and patience, to make things better.And (2) that what each of us does, even facing over-whelming difficulties, makes a real difference, becausewe are not alone.

Even as I find comfort and consolation in the beauty andorder of Greek and Latin poetry, I am reminded once againof how unforcedly my beloved authors address our deep-est, most abiding concerns. he partly echoes; and, characteristically, he says what heought to say, not what he feels. What, then, of our ownefforts, as we guide our students through the understand-ing and translation of this day’s assignment? Can theypossibly help?

From reading and rereading Thucydides, I know betterthan to believe that study of the Classics per se canmake us better people or more effective policy-makers.From reading and rereading Sophocles, I am all tooaware that the highest human achievements, the mostadvanced technology, “tend sometimes to good, some-times to ill.”

I do think that the Classics can help us understand hu-man nature, our own and others’, in its terrible and won-derful unpredictability; can teach us care and compas-sion; can show us the loveliness, and the vulnerability, ofworlds that we must sometimes fight to preserve, andsometimes perhaps relinquish like Aeneas; can help usexpress ideas and feelings together, maybe even recon-nect “what we feel” with “what we ought to say.” I dothink that the beauty and order of Greek and Latin po-etry (or history, or philosophy, or art) can nourish us, likeVirgil’s venison and wine, for the struggles to come. Andit may be, that what we teach and learn in the little worldof “Laughing and Grief” will play some small but signifi-cant part (I am thinking now, not just fancifully, ofTolkien’s hobbits) in those greater struggles.

REPORT OF THE ACLS DELEGATE

The American Council of Learned Societies held its an-nual meeting on May 3-5, 2001 at the Sheraton SocietyHill Hotel in Philadelphia. The following information isof particular interest to APA members.

1. President John D’Arms reported that the ACLS en-dowment campaign continues to move toward theCouncil’s goal of being able to provide adequate fellow-ships in substantial numbers indefinitely. Twenty-six re-search universities have agreed to contribute $50,000each for the next ten years, for a total of $13 million innew endowment funds. This new endowment will al-low ACLS to make substantial increases to the fellow-ships for senior scholars. These awards are now $50,000;the goal is to bring them up to $75,000. Previous grantsfrom the Andrew W. Mellon and Ford Foundations haveallowed ACLS to grant 22 new fellowships each year toassistant professors, more than doubling the number pre-viously available (the number has increased from 20 to42).

2. The Burkhardt Fellowship Program is now in its sec-ond year. This $65,000 fellowship is designed for re-cently tenured faculty who are embarking on ambitiousmajor projects to be undertaken at one of nine nationalresearch centers (including the American Academy inRome). (In special cases candidates can make a casefor remaining at their home institutions.) Eleven fellow-ships were awarded for 2001-2. Classicists shouldtake note: The number of applications for this fellow-ship remains low. There were only 95 applications for itfor 2001-02 - and none in classics (ancient history, ar-chaeology, and classical literary theory had one applica-tion each).

3. The History E-Book Project (sponsored by the An-drew W. Mellon Foundation) is moving forward with itsplans to publish 85 new electronic monographs and abacklist of important works. Five learned societies formthe initial working group: American Historical Associa-tion, Middle East Studies Association, Organization ofAmerican Historians, Renaissance Society of America,Society for the History of Technology. Although theAPA is not a member of the working group, many worksin our field will be included. Program SessionsOn Friday, May 4, the members, delegates, administra-tive officers of member associations, and representa-tives from college and university associates of ACLSparticipated in a session entitled “Phases of theHumanist’s Academic Career.” Edie Goldenberg, Pro-fessor of Political Science and Public Policy and FormerDean of the College of Literature, Science and the Arts,of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, addressed thetopic from her perspective as a former dean of a majorresearch university. Mary Patterson McPherson, VicePresident of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Presi-dent Emerita of Bryn Mawr College, spoke both asformer president of a liberal arts college and as a repre-sentative of Mellon, which is funding grants to severalinstitutions to promote the development of humanitiesfaculty members at various stages of their careers. Theparticipants then broke out into several discussion groups,which reported back to the session as a whole.

As always, a highlight of the annual meeting was theCharles Homer Haskins Lecture, “A Life of Learning.”This year’s lecturer was Helen Vendler, Kingsley Por-ter University Professor of English and American Lit-erature at Harvard University. The lecture was held inthe Benjamin Franklin Hall of the American Philosophi-cal Society. Like others in the series, it will be publishedby ACLS.

On Saturday, May 5, three scholars presented papers ina panel entitled “The Electronic Humanist.” All threepapers were interesting and of extraordinary quality.Edward L. Ayers, Professor of History at the Univer-sity of Virginia, spoke on The Valley of the ShadowProject, which presents an exhaustive description of twocounties (north and south) before and during the Ameri-can Civil War. Professor Ayers uses this site in his teach-ing, but it is also both a fine research tool and a rivetingsite for the casual web visitor http://jefferson.village.virginia.edu/vshadow2/. Morris Eaves,Professor of English at the University of Rochester,spoke on the William Blake Archive, a large and attrac-tive database of Blake images, editions, and texts(www.blakearchive.org). Michael Estor, President ofLuna Imaging, Inc., spoke on the Digital Design Collec-tion Project at the Museum of Modern Art.

History was admitted as a constituent member of ACLS.Thomas A. Green from the American Society for LegalHistory and Lucy Freeman Sandler from the Interna-tional Center of Medieval Art were elected to the Ex-ecutive Committee of the Delegates. William R. Ferris,Chairman of the National Endowment for the Humani-ties, addressed the members at lunch on Friday. It wasannounced that next year’s Haskins lecturer will beHenry A. Millon, Dean Emeritus, Center for AdvancedStudy in the Visual Arts at the National Gallery of Art.

REPORT OF THE 1999-2000 APA/NEH FELLOW AT THE TLL

Wer ist der Thesaurus?

Capitalism can make you forget. American capitalism,that is. I have been back in the States for well over ayear now, and the daily pleasures of life in a major Euro-pean capital grow more obscure the longer I am away—beer, of course, and walkable, habitable cityscapes—but, the history of classical philology aside, the true ge-nius of Germany lies in its endless capacity for makingbread. Breads and pastries of every description:Sonnenblumenbrot with Irischbutter in the late after-noon, warm Weissbrot in the morning, Käse- andButterbrezen, Semel upon Semel at any hour, to begin.I’m a fairly typical American for this day and age, whichmeans I am not a WASP, nor did I feel it a cultural im-perative that I should devote a life to the study of textscommonly acknowledged to be at the core, if there issuch a thing, of the honorific epithet, “Western.” I un-derstand the dangers and limitations of Eurocentrism,and if you buy me a Bier, I may point them out to you atlength. But in Munich I forgot them all and lived, so faras I was able, as they did. And it was divine.

It wasn’t my first time in Europe, and I don’t mean togive the impression that I just got off the truck; but itwas my first time living in Europe as a professional.And professionalism, urbanity, and supple, rich minds Ifound at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae. My year atthe Thesaurus was among the most quietly challengingand interesting years I have known intellectually. Onmy trips back to the US for a conference or interview, Iwas asked more than once by long-standing members

of the profession what it was, exactly, that we did at theThesaurus. Everyone knows it’s a dictionary, and thatit’s Teutonic in scope and depth. But when confrontedwith the comparatively swift progress with the TLG —though the projects are as different as the professionalcontexts that are producing them — the TLL might ap-pear to be an anachronism and stubbornly committed toa certain style of scholarship that some Americans donot give much regard. Prejudices distort. Writing The-saurus articles is a fundamentally humanistic, by whichI do not mean, “scientific,” endeavor. True: TLL ar-ticles present an argument about a single lemma’s tra-jectory through 800+ years of literature, coins, inscrip-tions, etc. But the products of this research should beregarded as essays, not fiats. The hierarchical formal-ity of the presentation and the forbidding array of sym-bols, abbreviations, and so forth cannot hide the factthat there is a serious person here thinking and speakingthrough the forms, entirely aware of the risks of choos-ing one disposition over another, of including one pas-sage here, another there. The Thesaurista’s creativityis filtered through her architecture. It requires delicatesensibilities, and patience, to appreciate this kind of work.

An honor that goes with being the American Stipendiatat the Thesaurus is the periodic correspondence fromAmerican scholars requesting information from theZettelarchiv or clarifications on articles already in print.I fielded one inquiry from an eminent Ovidian about apassage cited in an article written many years ago. So,I undertook to write up a response on behalf of the TLL,in consultation, of course, with my Redaktor NigelHolmes and the Generalredaktor, the late Peter Flury.I wrote a draft of a response and submitted it to HerrFlury for criticism and, yes, approval. I had begun myresponse rather bureaucratically with the grand, “We atthe Thesaurus believe …” Later that day Herr Fluryfound me in the Bibliothek — a Latinist’s dream —and invited me to his office for Tee und Brot to discussmy responsum. And in his inimitable style, which wasso simple, understated yet sophisticated, very mascu-line, urbane, musical (he played violin in a local orches-tra), looking away he intoned in his slightly Swiss ac-cent, “Ja, ja, Sie haben gut getan,” and gave noddingapproval to my effort as a whole. But catching me withhis eyes, and with a slight smile, he asked, “Aber, HerrRomero, wer ist der Thesaurus?” Who, indeed? And ina few small sentences thereafter I understood that theThesaurus wasn’t, at least in this man’s hands, an au-

thoritative body legislating Truth to Latin pilgrims in ex-quisitely clean, double-columned type set. It was a cul-ture, a way of reading Latin, a way of communicatingthat experience to the highly select group who dare toreally understand these articles.

I am an American, and it is very American to, ultimately,disavow the strange formality of Europe and hunger forquantity as well quality, invest in “to-go” cups, rewardbusinesses that do not actively put obstacles in the wayof my exchanging money for goods and services. Butlate in the afternoon, before cycling home from campusto our new place downtown, I sit down in my office,after a day of teaching or reading, and take coffee, look-ing through a window that overlooks an amphitheatre,until I glance left at two massive bookshelves where myLatin holdings are now fastidiously catalogued and main-tained Thesauri modo.

REPORT OF THE 2001 MINORITY SCHOLARSHIP WINNER

I had been told that a traveler to Greece never forgetsher first glimpse of the Acropolis. So I envisioned mineas an aerial view of the Acropolis, or perhaps one of theParthenon lit up against the night sky. My first glimpse,though, was not exactly as I had imagined. While ridingthrough Athens in a bus, I saw the Parthenon in thedistance between rows of modern six-story buildings.At first, I was disturbed that the idyllic scene I had imag-ined had been sullied by urban development. But in ret-rospect, my first glimpse faithfully portrays my two-weekexperience in Greece; soon after my first glimpse, I be-gan to recognize and honor the sensible coexistence be-tween the permanence of ancient Greece and the mo-dernity of today’s Greece.

I arrived in Athens in late June with my tour-mates onthe State University of New York-Brockport’s Mytho-logical Study Tour. We were to visit sites on the main-land, Crete, Santorini, and Delos. On our first evening inAthens, Program Director Nick Mouganis imparted tous the essence of a country with a history and culture ofover two millennia. He emphasized that Greece wasunique in its contrasts between the ancient and the mod-ern. Indeed, the proof for Nick’s assertion lay all around

us in the archaeological sites and skyscrapers, in theCycladic figurines and CDs, and in the Greek peoplethemselves.

I was affected by the permanence of ancient Greecemost at Delphi. Tucked high in the mountains and awayfrom modern cities, Delphi possessed a certain time-lessness. As I walked up the Sacred Way, it was easy toimagine those who had gone before—whether to seekan oracular response, bring offerings, or compete in thegames. There was something remarkable about a placewhere time seemed to bend itself and where the samemountains looked down upon generations of human civi-lization. Moreover, I was able to appreciate the art andarchitecture which I had previously studied: the SiphnianTreasury, the Temple to Apollo, the Charioteer, and vari-ous kouroi. The power and permanence of kouroi neverstruck me as when I saw Kleobis and Biton toweringover me.

Meanwhile, outside of the ancient sites, the modern worldhurried by with their Smart cars, SUVs, and Goody’sfast food stores. The contrast was startling. And thoughthe two realms were vastly different, I found that theGreek people had embraced both the ancient and themodern in stride. They greeted visitors with age-old hos-pitality, but their salutations could be delivered in a num-ber of languages; they had circulated the drachma forages, but will transition to the Euro next year.

Although I had learned about the ancient sites in myclasses, the photographs and paragraphs in the textbookscould only be substitutes until I was able to view thesites in person. Upon visiting them, I was able to appre-ciate fully not only their artistic value, but also their his-toric value as havens of permanence and timelessnessin a changing world.

As I left Athens, I spied my last view of the Acropolis,appropriately the same as my first; the two views servedas bookends of my two weeks. The Parthenon stood inthe background, framed by tall modern buildings in theforeground. This picture of the Acropolis truly symbol-izes what I acquired in my time in Greece: renewed,deeper awe of the ancients, and respect for their mod-ern successors.

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR APAMINORITY SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Committee On Minority Scholarships of the Ameri-can Philological Association invites applications fromminority undergraduate students for a scholarship to beawarded for Summer 2002. The purpose of the scholar-ship is to further an undergraduate classics major’spreparation for graduate work in Classics. Eligible pro-posals might include (but are not limited to) participationin summer programs in Italy, Greece, Egypt, etc., or lan-guage training at institutions in the US or Canada. Themaximum amount of the award will be $3,000.

Candidates will be judged on the basis of (a) their aca-demic qualifications, especially in Classics (includingdemonstrated ability in at least one classical language),(b) the quality of their proposal for study with respect topreparation for a career in Classics, and (c) need. Theapplication must be supported by a member of the APA.

The deadline for applications is February 15, 2002; wewill announce the result by March 15, 2002. Applicantsshould submit (1) a letter of application describing theapplicant’s plans for Summer 2002 and his/her broadercareer goals; (2) an undergraduate transcript; (3) twoletters of recommendation by faculty members or otherprofessionals who have worked with the student duringthe past two years (at least one of these must be anAPA member). NOTE: in “minority” we include Afri-can-American, Hispanic-American, Asian-Americanand Native-American students.

The 133rd Annual Meeting of the APA in conjunctionwith the 103rd Annual Meeting of the ArchaeologicalInstitute of America will take place at the PhiladelphiaMarriott Hotel from Thursday-Sunday, January 3-6, 2002.APA members in good standing will receive the printedProgram in early December. Presidential Panel. President Kenneth Reckford hasassembled an outstanding group of speakers for a panelto be presented on January 4 entitled “To Honor theTranslators:” Zeph Stewart on the Loeb Classical Li-brary, Mary-Kay Gamel on translating for performance,Glenn W. Most on theories of translation, and DavidFerry on the practice of translation. Peter Burian willserve as respondent.

Reading of Scenes from Invention of Love. By spe-cial arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., the Com-mittee on Outreach will present a reading of TomStoppard’s recent play Invention of Love followed by adiscussion of the play. APA members will take all theroles in the play. This session will be open to the public,and the Philadelphia audience that made the play’s runhere so successful will be encouraged to attend.

Minority Student Scholarship Fund-raising Raffleand Breakfast. The APA’s Committee on Scholar-ships for Minority Students is again sponsoring a fund-raising breakfast and raffle on Saturday, January 5, from7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. in the Philadelphia Marriott Hotel.Tickets to this event cost $35 and include admission tothe breakfast and three chances to win several prizes ofbooks donated by a variety of academic publishers aswell as complimentary registration to the next AnnualMeeting in New Orleans. Session on Teacher Training in Graduate Pro-grams. On Saturday morning, January 5, the Commit-tee on Education is sponsoring a session chaired by Di-vision Vice President, Kenneth Kitchell, that will addresspedagogical training for teaching assistants in graduateClassics programs. The panel will present data on thecurrent state of (and lack of) this training and will thenpresent a series of suggestions for focusing more atten-tion on this issue.

Roundtable Discussion Sessions. The APA Boardis very grateful to AIA for inviting our members to par-ticipate in the organization of this session which will takeplace at midday on January 5. Members of both societ-ies will lead separate discussions at individual tables.Topics will include issues of intellectual and practicalimportance to classicists and archaeologists and willappear in the annual meeting Program. Sign-up sheetswill be available in advance of the session so that par-ticipation at each table can be limited to number that willencourage useful dialogues. A cash food service will beavailable nearby.

REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN AND

MINORITY GROUPS, SURVEY OF JOURNALS FOR 1999

The CSWMG annually reviews publication practices ofjournals in the fields of Classics (literary studies, ancienthistory); on the numbers of articles submitted and ac-cepted; and the gender/ethnicity of writers, editors, andreviewers. The survey is designed to give informationon how we are doing as a profession in offering equalopportunites for the scholarship and advancement of ourmembers. The Committee wishes to remind readers,however, that submissions vary from year to year andthat the number we are dealing with in any one yearmake it unwise to draw conclusions about an individualjournal from the results of a single survey. Those inter-ested in long-term trends can consult past issues of theAPA Newsletter.

This year’s report reflects information submitted fromseventeen journals in the USA and Canada. Archaeol-ogy News, Echos du monde classique, and EtruscanStudies did not respond. Any journals not currently onour list should contact the Committee chair (John Kirby)if they wish to be included in the next survey.

The most meaningful statistics are the Total Number ofSubmissions by Males and Females and Percentagesand Acceptance rates for the same. The first shouldmatch the percentage of the two groups in the total poolof classicists. The APA reports 970 (35.28% )womenand 1779 (64.71% ) men listed as members by ScholarsPress in December, 1999. The percentage of Total Ac-ceptances should match approximately the percentage

of submissions. In that case the Acceptance Rate forWomen and Men should be roughly equal.

This year the rate of total submissions by women (37%)and by men (63%) and the percentage of total accep-tances for women (34%) and for men (66%) roughlyequal the APA perecentages on membership. Eight jour-nals (AJAH, AJP, CJ, CP, GRBS, ICS, PHOEN, TAPA)have submission rates by women consistent with per-centage of APA membership. Of these, three journalsreport a perecentage of total acceptances for womenconsistent with the perecentage of submissions and APAmembership (CP, PHOEN, TAPA). Four journals re-port a percentage of total acceptances lower than thepercentage of submissions and of APA membership(AJAH, CJ, GRBS, ICS). These figures are, however,difficult to interpret. The acceptance rate for women atGRBS was 50%, while the acceptance rate for womenat AJAH and ICS was 0%. Four journals report parityor near parity in submissions and percentage of totalaccepted (ARETH, CA, CO, CW). It is perhaps signifi-cant that CW reports featuring articles and entire issueson topics relating to the study of women in antiquity, andCA reports a published policy encouraging work in-formed by “new theoretical methodologies.” Four jour-nals report low submission rates by women (CB, HESP,HSCP, VERG). Of these, HESP and HSCP report apercentage of total accepted greater than what wouldbe predicted by submission rates or by percentage ofAPA membership. One journal reports low submissionrates by men (HEL) and an even lower percentage oftotal acceptances. The lower percentage of submissionsmay reflect Helios’ stated policy of soliciting articles onwomen in antiquity.

The number of referees and editorial board members isslightly higher than the percentage of women in the pro-fession. The number of reviews by women is slighlylower than the percentage of women in the profession.The numbers do not tell us how many women are per-forming these tasks, i.e. if only a handful of women havereached positions of authority and serve as editors, re-viewers and referees for several journals, or if the num-bers reflect the success of the broader membership. Inthis regard, TAPA reported a “special effort to ask newerfaculty, including women to serve as referees.” CA re-ported careful monitoring of the number of women ref-erees.

The committee always solicits comments from journals.PHOEN gave a salutary reminder that countries out-side of the United States also acknowledge the need todiversify our profession and that diversity takes particu-lar form based on the history of particular societies(“Phoenix, being a Canadian journal, is required to takeinto account: (a) balance between Anglophones andFrancophones in refereeing, reviewing and in service asthe Editorial Board and (b) regional representatives inthese same areas.”).

CURRENT ACTIVITIES OF NATIONAL COMMITTEE

FOR LATIN AND GREEK

Twelve national and regional classical associations makeup the council of the National Committee for Latin andGreek, which is also supported by state associations anddepartments of Classics. Founded in 1978, the NCLGprovides a united front for identifying and addressingconcerns, priorities, and opportunities for the advance-ment of Classics in North America. The Committeehas two affiliate member organizations in Britain andThe Netherlands. The NCLG coordinates its promo-tional activities with those of the ACL, APA, CAMWS,CANE, and CAAS in order to share resources and avoidduplication of effort. Nancy McKee, who has repre-sented CAAS on the Committee for many years, waselected Chair of the NCLG at its June meeting.

Liaison with JNCL/NCLISAnnually the NCLG contributes $7,000 to the Joint Na-tional Committee for Languages (JNCL) and its lobby-ing arm the National Council for Languages and Inter-national Studies (NCLIS) in Washington D.C. As theninth largest contributing organization of its sixty mem-bers, the NCLG holds a seat on the Board of Directorsof JNCL/NCLIS, ensuring that Classics is well repre-sented in all its deliberations. Sally Davis recently servedfor three years as the NCLG’s official delegate. At thesame time Marty Abbott served on the Board as repre-sentative of the Foreign Language Association of Vir-ginia. Currently, Marty is serving as Secretary of JNCL/NCLIS. This year Christine Sleeper was the NCLG’sofficial delegate to its annual meeting. She also repre-

sents the Committee at annual meetings of Euroclassicaat her own expense.

As a founding member organization of JNCL/NCLIS,the National Committee for Latin and Greek has main-tained a strong relationship of mutual support and coop-eration with the modern languages in developing nationallanguage policy and supporting federal legislation thatfunds language programs nationwide. NCLIS plays akey role in working with congressmen to draft legisla-tion in support of language study. It generates supportfor these bills in Congress and initiates letter-writingcampaigns among its constituent organizations.

Over the years this joint effort has resulted in dramaticgrowth in funding of major education programs: the NEH,Elementary and Secondary Education Act, thePostsecondary Education Act, the Foreign LanguageAssistance Act (FLAP), international study-abroad pro-grams, and educational research and development. Asa result of such collaborative efforts, we continue to seenumerous bills introduced each year before Congress toupgrade and improve the teaching of foreign languages.A few years ago under the leadership of RobertLaBouve, Marty Abbott, Richard Gascoyne, and GlennKnudsvig the Classics profession was a leader in thedevelopment of national standards for classical lan-guages. These standards then served as a model forthe drafting of standards for other languages.

In September 2000, when Secretary of Education Rich-ard Riley testified before the Senate Subcommittee onInternational Security, he urged increased financial sup-port of foreign language programs in the U.S. and espe-cially of the Foreign Language Assistance Act. At thatmeeting Marty Abbott was invited to speak on a panelof foreign language educators which was asking theSenate to increase funds to help retain qualified teach-ers and to further encourage development of languageproficiency in the schools.

NCLG’s Classics Action NetworkIn support of the legislative agenda of JNCL/NCLISthe National Committee for Latin and Greek has oftenorganized letter writing campaigns at meetings of theACL and other classical organizations. In addition, theNCLG’s Executive Secretary, Judith Lynn Sebesta, hasbeen contacting the designees by e-mail about threat-ened programs in secondary schools and universities.

In the past two years the Classics Action Network hascome to the assistance of La Jolla High School in SanDiego (ancient Greek), a high school in New Wilmington,Pennsylvania, Gross Point South High School in Michi-gan, and York High School in Elmhurst, Illiniois. Promo-tional materials were sent at the request of elementaryand middle schools seeking to implement new Latin pro-grams. In cooperation with the CAMWS CPL, APA,and Classics Discussion Group the NCLG has respondedto crises at Ball State University in Indiana, CarletonUniversity in Ontario, the University of Natal in SouthAfrica, and recently Loyola University in Chicago. Let-ters from concerned classicists and former studentshelped prevent the dismantling of the Department andthe undergraduate Classics program at Loyola.

Letter-writing campaigns conducted by the ACL, NCLG,and CAMWS two years ago resulted in the inclusion ofLatin and Greek among languages that would meet thelanguage requirement for the International Baccalaure-ate (IB) Program. Previously, they were categorized asoptional electives in competition with fine arts and com-puter science. The IB program, which is offered duringthe junior and senior years of high school, requires along sequence of language study to prepare students forthe IB Diploma exams.

Over a decade ago when Latin programs in British pub-lic schools were severely curtailed by a national cur-riculum requiring two years of a modern language, theNCLG generated widespread letters of protest and dis-cussed political strategies with the officers of the JointAssociation of Classical Teachers. Soon afterwards,when the organizers of Euroclassica came to the U.S.looking for models upon which to found a European clas-sical organization, the NCLG and ACL offered adviceand useful models.

Sessions at ACTFLOver the years the NCLG has helped foster a classicalpresence at annual meetings of the American Councilon the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) by or-ganizing sessions of interest to teachers of modern andclassical languages. The Committee has sponsored ses-sions on topics ranging from cultural diversity in theRoman world and the Latin roots of Spanish to success-ful Latin programs in elementary schools. In Novem-ber 2000 the NCLG sponsored a session with two speak-ers. Eileen Strange presented her survey about gender

and ethnicity in widely used Latin textbooks. Joe Dav-enport spoke about the timely work of his CANE com-mittee in revising the standards for Latin in the Massa-chusetts Foreign Language Framework. Marty Abbottcontinues to serve on ACTFL’s Executive Council. Thisfall she is a candidate for the office of President ofACTFL.

Mary G. Goggin (1908-2001)

Professor Emerita Mary G. Goggin, a member of theAPA since 1933, died after a long illness on September6, 2001, at the Miller Memorial Community in Meriden,CT where she resided for the past three years.

Born in Marlboro, MA on August 21, 1908, she gradu-ated in 1926 from Girls’ Latin School in Boston. In 1930she received her A.B. degree Phi Beta Kappa withHonors in Greek and Latin from Barnard College. Thefollowing year was spent at the American School of Clas-sical Studies in Athens on a Barnard Traveling Fellow-ship. She would later refer to that time as “the mostwonderful year of all.” In 1940 she was awarded herPh.D. degree in Classics at Yale University. She alsocompleted her study in education courses then at TrinityCollege in Hartford, CT. Beginning in 1934, in the midstof the Great Depression, she embarked on her teachingcareer. She taught briefly at St. Mary’s College inLeavenworth, KS and later at Weaver High School inHartford. She always admitted to having found satis-faction in teaching on both levels. In 1940 she began

her long association with the New York State Collegefor Teachers at Albany which later expanded into theState University of New York at Albany, and is todaythe University at Albany, SUNY. Although she held adoctorate, she had the rank of Instructor in the Depart-ment of Ancient Languages until 1948 when she be-came Assistant Professor. Her promotions to Associ-ate Professor and Professor came in 1955 and 1957,respectively. For almost a quarter century, Prof. Goggin,Prof. Lois V. Williams, who died on June 19, 2001, andProf. Edith Owen Wallace (1896-1972) made up theDepartment and trained many aspiring Latin teachers inNew York State. Still residing in Albany is their formercolleague, Harriet Sartwell Norton, who directed the stu-dent teachers in Latin at the campus school, the MilneSchool. As Chairwoman from 1962-1972, Prof. Gogginsucceeded in establishing a Ph.D. Program in Classicsin a larger Department and furthered Classical archae-ology with the excavation of Idalion on Cyprus. Alwaysan ardent supporter of the Classical Tradition, she elo-quently extolled the Classical virtues of Humanitas andPietas. To all who knew and studied with Prof. Goggin,the quotation in her entry in the Barnard College 1930Yearbook, The Mortarboard, is so fitting: “And here atlast great knowledge does not chill the gentle current ofthe soul.” A teacher and friend to many students, sheremained close to them even after she retired in 1978 asshe continued to be very active in University affairs andhighly visible at alumni functions until leaving Albany in1998. Also, Prof. Goggin for many years was very ac-tive in learned societies including The Classical Asso-ciation of Atlantic States, The Classical Association ofNew England, and The Classical Association of theEmpire State.

Surviving are many nieces, nephews, grandnieces andgrandnephews. Prof. Goggin was predeceased by twobrothers and a sister. A funeral mass was held at St.Thomas Aquinas R.C. Church in Southington, CT. AWARDS TO MEMBERS

In October the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthurFoundation named 23 recipients of the 2001 MacArthurFellowships. Two of these recipients, Danielle Allenof the University of Chicago, and Dirk Obbink of theUniversity of Oxford, are APA members. Each Fellowwill receive $500,000 over five years of “no strings at-tached” support.

According to a press release issued by the Foundation,there is no application or interview process for theseawards. The Foundation believes that the Fellows arein the best position to decide how to make the most ef-fective use of their awards and therefore neither re-quires nor expects specific projects from the Fellows,nor does it ask for reports on how the money is used.The list of nominators for the Fellows Program, num-bering several hundred over the course of a year, con-tinually changes. These nominators, who serve anony-mously, are chosen for their ability to identify peoplewho demonstrate exceptional creativity in their work. A12-member Selection Committee, whose members alsoserve anonymously, makes recommendations to theFoundation’s Board of Directors. While there are noquotas or limits, typically between 20 and 30 Fellowsare selected annually.

Danielle Allen is Associate Professor in the Depart-ment of Classical Languages and Literatures, the De-partment of Politics, and the Committee on SocialThought at the University of Chicago. Redrawing the Boundaries - Metaphorical and Lit-eral Borders in the Ancient World. 19-22 Septem-ber, 2002, Yale University, New Haven, CT.

This conference explores the ways, literal and meta-phorical, in which both ancient Greeks and Romans andmodern scholars have defined and categorized the an-cient world. Sessions will be devoted to attributions andauthorship, periodization, metaphorical and geographi-cal boundaries, and categorization. Questions for con-sideration include:

I. How do ancients and moderns make attributions, andwhat motives do they serve? How are orders made,reorganized, then broken and abandoned in favor ofsomething new?

II. How did the ancients organize their world into differ-ent periods of history, and how do modern scholars fol-low or reject these distinctions?

III. Can we trace the history of metaphorical spacesand boundaries (social, religious, gender & ethnic) in theancient world? How do these boundaries shift acrosstime and from different perspectives?

IV. How do the ancients divide notional and physicalspaces? How do our modern maps (both notional andliteral) correspond to the ancient ones?

V. How did the ancients define different genres or modesof artistic production? How did they divide and definefields of knowledge (lists, lexica, etc)? Can we see anevolution of these distinctions and classifications acrosstime? Are modern distinctions based on these ancienttaxonomies or not, and how do they differ?

In each session, we will also ask whether we can imag-ine different boundaries or categories, and how they mightchange our view of the ancient world. Selected paperswill be submitted for publication as a single volume ofYale Classical Studies.

We invite abstracts from all areas of inquiry in the an-cient Greek and Roman worlds, including but not limitedto, the following modern categories: literature, archae-ology and art history, history, gender and ethnicity stud-ies, religion, and philosophy. Colorado College Summer Latin Institute. Third Annual Symposium on Roman Imperial Ide-ology, Villa Vergiliana, Cumae, Italy, May 20-24, 2002,sponsored by the University of Oklahoma, Departmentof Classics.

“Julius Caesar and the Foundations of Roman ImperialIdeology” is the theme of the symposium in 2002. Cae-sar is a seminal figure in the development of the ideasand institutions of Roman imperial ideology. The goal ofthe conference is to place the achievement and legacyof Caesar into the broader historical context. Accord-ingly, we welcome papers on all aspects of Roman im-perial ideology. We expect sessions on such themes asCaesar as propagandist; Hellenistic influences upon thedevelopment of Roman imperial ideology; imperial ide-ology in the late republic; the legacy of Caesar to hisimperial successors; Judaism and Roman imperial ideol-ogy; and the image of Julius Caesar through the ages.There will also be an open forum devoted to ideology asconcept and field of study. We look for papers fromscholars in a wide range of disciplines, including litera-ture, ancient history, art history, and numismatics. As inpast years, the Villa Vergiliana and Cumae provide anatmosphere ideally suited to scholarly interchange; andthe program for the symposium includes a visit to ar-chaeological sites in the area.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation grants re-search fellowships and research awards to highly quali-fied scholars and scientists of all nationalities not resi-dent in Germany, enabling them to undertake periods ofresearch in Germany. It also provides research fellow-ships to highly qualified German scholars, enabling themto spend periods of research at the institutes of formerHumboldt guest-researchers abroad.

The Foundation enables highly qualified scholars resi-dent outside Germany who hold doctorates to carry outresearch projects of their own choice in Germany (agelimit: 40 years). Applications may be submitted for long-term research stays of between 6 and 12 months. Short-term study tours, participation in conferences or educa-tional visits cannot be funded. The Pembroke Center at Brown University annuallysupports three or four postdoctoral research fellows inresidence for an academic year. Candidates who dowork that is qualitative and humanistic in nature aredrawn from the humanities, the social sciences, and thelife sciences. The Center’s annual research focus for2002-03 is “Theories of Embodiment.”

The Center seeks applicants from all fields, but espe-cially from cultural studies, feminist social psychology,developmental psychology, developmental biology, his-tory of the body, anthropology, cognitive psychology, andsexuality studies. As a group we will explore theoriesthat attempt to combine biology and culture in flexibleand imaginative ways. We are especially eager to findscholars who are interested in applying developmentalsystems theory (DST) to the study of the developmentof gender awareness, gender identity, forms of sexual

desire, brain and hormone development, and the culturaland historically specific expression of gendered orracialized traits. We therefore welcome scholars whohave a background in DST, even if they have not previ-ously worked on gender or race; similarly we welcomescholars from all fields who work on gender and/or raceand who are interested in pursuing theories that blendbiological, sociological, historical, or cultural approachesto the problem of embodiment.

Fellowships are open to scholars from all disciplines.Recipients may not hold a tenured position in an Ameri-can college or university. Preference will be given toprojects in which there is significant scholarly and theo-retical attention given to theories of embodiment.

This is a residential fellowship. Fellows participate weeklyin the Pembroke Seminar, present two public papersduring the year, and pursue individual research. TheCenter particularly encourages third world and minorityscholars to apply.

Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries Grants-in-Aid.The Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries are pleasedto offer a minimum of four grants-in-aid annually, eachone month in duration, for research in the humanities inany field appropriate to the collections. The purpose isto foster the high-level use of the University of Wiscon-sin Madison Libraries’ rich holdings, and to make thembetter known and more accessible to a wider circle ofscholars. The Memorial Library is distinguished in almost everyarea of scholarship. It boasts world-renowned collec-tions of:

- the largest American collection of avant-garde “LittleMagazines”

- Scandinavian and Germanic history and literatures

The Center for the Ancient Mediterranean at Colum-bia University intends to appoint a postdoctoral fellowfor the year 2002-2003. Eligible fields are all branchesof the history, archaeology and anthropology of the an-cient world and all branches of classics. The AncientNear East and Late Antiquity are fully eligible. Candi-dates who make use of genuinely interdisciplinary ap-proaches are encouraged. The successful candidate, whomust have defended his/her Ph.D. dissertation by Au-gust 15th, 2002 (but not earlier than August 15th, 1999)will be expected to teach one undergraduate course inone semester for the appropriate department, and toassist the Director in the other semester by helping to

organize a conference or similar activities. Salary: $37K,plus $3K of research expenses. The fellow will haveaccess to university housing. The John J. Winkler Memorial Prize. The John J.Winkler Memorial Trust invites all undergraduate andgraduate students in North America (plus those currentlyunenrolled who have not as yet received a doctorateand who have never held a regular academic appoint-ment) to enter the eighth competition for the JohnJ.Winkler memorial prize. This year the Prize will be acash award of $1,250.

The Prize in intended to honor the memory of John J.(“Jack”) Winkler, a classical scholar, teacher, and politi-cal activist for radical causes both within and outsidethe academy, who died of AIDS in 1990 at the age of46. Jack believed that the profession as a whole dis-courages young scholars from exploring neglected ordisreputable topics, and from applying unconventionalor innovative methods to their scholarship. He wishedto be remembered by means of an annual Prize thatwould encourage such efforts. In accordance with hiswishes, the John J. Winkler Memorial trust awards acash prize each year to the author of the best under-graduate or graduate essay in any risky or marginal fieldof classical studies. Topics include (but are not limitedto) those that Jack himself explored: the ancient novel,the sex/gender systems of antiquity, the social meaningsof Greek drama, and ancient Mediterranean culture andsociety. Approaches include (but are not limited to) thosethat Jack’s own work exemplified: feminism, anthropol-ogy, narratology, semiotics, cultural studies, ethnic stud-ies, and lesbian/gay studies.

The winner of the Prize will be selected from among thecontestants by a jury of five. This year, the jury will becomposed of David Braaten, Denise McCoskey, KarenBassi, Lillian Doherty, and John Kirby. The Trust re-serves the right not to confer the Prize in any year in

which the essays submitted to the competition are judgedinsufficiently prizeworthy.

USC Professor Emeritus Edward O'Neil died on Au-gust 21, 2001, after a long illness, in Claremont, Califor-nia.

He came to the University of Southern California (PhD,UC Berkeley, 1954), in the mid-50s, was chairman ofthe Classics Department for many years, and was knownfor his interests in Juvenal and Plutarch before beingcaught up in the work of the Institute for Antiquity andChristianity in Claremont, where he worked on publica-tion projects on Plutarch and the New Testament, theGreek Magical Papyri, and the Chreia in Ancient Edu-cation and Literature.

He is survived by his wife Charlotte and three daugh-ters. Condolences can be sent to the family c/o Chair,Department of Classics, THH 224, University of South-ern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089-0352.
