Dr. Sandra Magnus, AIAA Executive Director, Visits St. Louis

On Thursday, 10 October, the Boeing St. Louis auditorium filled to capacity as over 200 AIAA members, guests and students listened to former astronaut Dr. Sandra Magnus share her perspectives on space. Dr. Magnus’ NASA career included 159 days in space traveling more than 60 million miles orbiting the earth more than 2660 times. She performed critical functions in Missions STS-112, STS-126 and STS-135/ULF7. She became Deputy Chief, Astronaut Office, in September 2012. Sandy left the agency in October 2012, after her appointment as Executive Director of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

Earlier in the day, Boeing hosted Dr. Magnus on a tour of the Boeing St. Louis facility, visiting the F-15 Eagle and F/A-18 Super Hornet assembly areas. It was a personal homecoming as the tour included the Compact Range Test Facility in which Sandy worked as a stealth engineer, on internal research and later, the Navy's A-12 Attack Aircraft program.

Sandy and current Boeing employees with whom she worked in the Near Field Test Facility, L-R Paul Pericich, Tom Mroczkowski, Melba Pulaski, Tom Burbridge, Jeff Ackerman, Larry Brase, Sandy Magnus, Dave Betterly, Wayne Crouch

Sandy enjoyed being in the St. Louis facility again and seeing everyone brought back many great memories. It was fantastic to see former collogues and she indicated having remained in contact with some throughout the years. Karen Copper

The purpose of the Project is the creation of an in-depth, authoritative account of the history of Lambert-St. Louis International Airport and its relationship to national and regional history that will be accessible and interesting to a broad public audience. Lambert is the most historic airport in the United States, having been in operation continuously since 1920. Its history is a microcosm of aviation history and American history during that period, and is worthy of study and exposition. The Project has been undertaken by the Missouri Aviation Historical Society, a Missouri not-for-profit corporation. The Project is organized by major subject matters and tasks. Working groups will be responsible for research, collection of material and creating written work product, under the leadership of an Editorial Board and Editor in Chief responsible for coordinating the activities of the working groups: Interested members should contact: Daniel J. O’Hara> [email protected]

Missouri Aviation Historical Society is a not-for-profit corporation, dedicated to honoring the aviators, designers, and entrepreneurs who have kept Missouri on the leading edge of aviation technology.

This month, we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the certification of one of the world’s best known biz jets, the Sabreliner. Developed by North American Aviation, the Sabreliner was originally built for the U.S. Air Force, and later modified for corporate use. The sexy jet from the 1960’s, still in corporate and military use today, has a significant role in the annals of Missouri aviation history. The Sabreliner Corporation is based in St. Louis, with a facility in Perryville, and Remmert Werner Corporation, based at Lambert, had the distribution rights for the first corporate versions.

Our guest speaker Doug Allen, has an intimate knowledge of the classic jet, with over 600 hours in the type, and has also turned wrenches on the Sabreliner.
