A Portrait of PlutoFirst discovered on Feb. 18, 1930,

by astronomer Clyde Tombaugh,Pluto has received a lot of attentionin the past several years. Today’sadults grew up knowing Pluto as theninth planet in our solar system, butin 2006, it was reclassified as adwarf planet.

In July 2015, NASA’s NewHorizons space probe flew by Pluto, collecting new data and images ofthe tiny former planet. Explore theseout-of-this-world facts about Earth’sfaraway friend:

Pluto’s existence was actuallypredicted in 1905 by Percival Lowell,

an American astronomer whonoticed odd variations in the orbitsof Neptune and Uranus thatsuggested the presence of anothernearby planet.

The dwarf planet has five moons:Charon, Styx, Nix, Kerberosand Hydra.

Pluto is 1,473 miles in diameter, which is about two-thirds as wideas Earth’s moon.

The largest known dwarf planetin the solar system, Pluto is also thebrightest member of the KuiperBelt, a mass of objects that orbitthe sun beyond Neptune.

Mostly covered in ice, thesurface temperature of Pluto isroughly 375 degrees below zero.

The heart-shaped region onPluto is a field of frost called theTombaugh Reggio.

Pluto rotates east to west, whereas Earth rotates west to east.

It takes 248 years for Pluto toorbit the sun.
