Did You Know?Strawberry Facts

By Brian K. Rosso, M.S., R.D.The Michigan strawberry seasonwill be here before you know it.Eight strawberries provide only45 calories, 140 percent of theRDA for vitamin C and three

grams of fiber. One strawberrycontains about 200 seeds andstrawberries are the only fruit

with seeds found on the outsideinstead of the inside. The only

way to harvest strawberries is byhand and the largest strawberryever picked was half a pound.

Historically, strawberriesrepresent peace and prosperity, and the average American eats

4.85 pounds of strawberriesannually. Strawberries offer themost flavor when eaten at room

temperature and strawberries area member of the rose family.Birds are responsible for thespread of strawberry seedsacross the country. Belgiumoffers a museum dedicated

entirely to strawberries.
