Page 3: American Dream - MKTO · 2014-11-20 · (“Money and the power… Once you get a little, they just wanna take you down, cuz.”) • I can - This relates to the American Dream because

• American Dream - This song relates to Gatsby and the American Dream because Mercedes Benz are kind of like the modern-day Rolls Royce and this relates to the American Dream because it explains wealth and luxury. (“Say hello to palm trees and benzs”)

• Dreamin’ - This relates to Gatsby because his dreams came true because he turned his dream of being rich and being with Daisy for once came true. (“It’s safe to say that dreams come true I guess. Don’t let nobody tell ya, try for yourself. Just know that I was once considered just a dreamer, but I paid my dues and turned so many doubters to believers.”)

• All Gold Everything - This relates to the American Dream because it explains the luxury that is around him. (“Gold all in my chain, Gold all in my ring, Gold all in my watch, Don’t believe me just watch.”)

• Money and the Power - This relates to the American Dream because this statement is true about the American Dream, this is because money is pretty much what the American Dream is about and everyone will hate you if you are living the American Dream. This is kind of what happened to Gatsby, everyone praised him for his parties, but when it came to his funeral, nobody came. (“Money and the power… Once you get a little, they just wanna take you down, cuz.”)

• I can - This relates to the American Dream because this is pretty much the quote that you have to follow in order for you to experience the American Dream. This is what Gatsby did, he worked really hard to be in that position of wealth and luxury. (I know I can be what I wanna be if I work hard at it, I’ll be where I wanna be)

Page 4: American Dream - MKTO · 2014-11-20 · (“Money and the power… Once you get a little, they just wanna take you down, cuz.”) • I can - This relates to the American Dream because

• Money Trees - This relates to the American Dream because everyone want’s to be under the “Money Tree” which means financially stable and kind of like overflowing with wealth and money and the power and luxury you get from the money. Almost exactly describing Gatsby. (“Money trees is the perfect place for shade and that’s just how I feel.”)

• Started from the Bottom - This represents the American Dream because this lyrics is basically saying that he went from nothing (bottom) and turned it into something and made him wealthy (wear every single chain). This also relates to Gatsby because he did turn nothing into something and made himself known and wealthy. (“I wear every single chain even when I’m in the house cause we started from the bottom now we here.”)

• Love Affair - This song relates to our theme reality vs perception because it’s about someone having an affair and this shows how everybody thinks that Daisy and Tom is happy, however Tom is cheating on her and Daisy loves Gatsby.

• Just the way you are - This is related to one of our themes because this relates to the reality that Gatsby really loved Daisy and wouldn’t stop loving her. Also, no matter how much Daisy messes up, Gatsby still cared and still loved her. (“I said I love you, and that’s forever, And this I promise from the heart, I couldn’t love you, any better, I love you just the way you are.”)

• I’ll Be - Gatsby’s dream of being with Daisy is constantly being talked about throughout the book and this part of the song relates to him because that is his dreams and it became reality when he said that Daisy should tell Tom that she doesn’t love him. (“Tell me that we belong together”)

Page 5: American Dream - MKTO · 2014-11-20 · (“Money and the power… Once you get a little, they just wanna take you down, cuz.”) • I can - This relates to the American Dream because

• Reality - This is related to our theme because Gatsby’s dream was to be with Daisy and he doesn’t think of the reality, all he thinks about are his dreams and his fantasy. (“Dreams are my reality, the only kind of real fantasy. Illusions are a common thing.”)

• Love Illusion - This relates to our theme because this is the reality of what happened to Gatsby and Daisy. Daisy realizes that she loves Tom more than Gatsby and she didn’t care at all about Gatsby’s love because he lied and this is the “spell” the Daisy was in and in the end, his love for her doesn’t have an effect on her anymore. (“You’re just another love illusion and you don’t seem to care at all. So let me end up this confusion, baby your spell ain’t magic anymore”)

• All of Me - This relates to our theme because Gatsby’s dream has been ended when Daisy chose Tom over him, but he never gave up on his dream and continued to be happy because he loved her and she loved him too. (“Even when I lose I’m winning, cause I give you all of me and you give me all of you.”)

• A Thousand Years - This relates to Gatsby’s dream of being with Daisy because no matter what was going on and no matter what happened, Gatsby was truly in love with Daisy and would not stop loving her. (“I have died waiting for you, Darling don’t be afraid I have loved you for a thousand years… I’ll love you for a thousand more.”)

• Am I Wrong - This relates to the dream of Gatsby because he feels as if people keep stopping him from being in love with Daisy and telling him that he should just give her up. (“So am I wrong for thinking that we could be something for real? Now am I wrong for trying to reach the things that I can’t see? But that’s just how I feel, that’s just how I feel.”)
