Hoese has had a record year, establishing himself as one of the all-time top hitters in the American Athletic Conference. Batting a conference-high .388, Hoese leads The American in hits (87), runs scored (69), home runs (23), total bases (177), on-base percentage (.484) and slugging percentage (.790). His 177 total bases lead the nation and are an American single-season record along with his 23 home runs. The junior third baseman ranks among the top 20 in the nation in eight offensive categories. Hoese has helped power the league’s most elite offense, as Tulane ranks atop The American in 10 offensive categories. Hoese has had 26 multi-hit games and 17 multi-RBI games, sporting a 19-game hitting streak and 35-game on-base streak this season. Hoese was named a semifinalist for both the 2019 Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy. He also earned National Hitter of the Week honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, Perfect Game and Collegiate Baseball. Both D1 Baseball and Perfect Game named Hoese to their Midseason All-American lists as a first team selection. PITCHER OF THE YEAR Jake Agnos * Jr. * LHP * ECU * Haymarket, Va. Agnos leads The American with a 2.06 ERA. The junior southpaw struck out a conference-record 124 batters (ninth in the nation) in 83.0 innings pitched this season. Agnos went 8-2 in 14 starts on the mound, averaging 13.45 strikeouts per nine innings, which is ranked ninth nationally. He scattered 19 earned runs, 61 hits and 34 walks, holding batters a .199 average. Agnos has reached double digits in strikeouts five times this season and has pitched seven or more innings in four appearances. Agnos hasn’t given up an earned run in his past four outings and last 31 innings pitched. He leads the conference in wins and strikeouts this season to help bolster the top pitching staff in The American. NEWCOMER POSITION PLAYER OF THE YEAR Hunter Goodman * Fr. * DH/OF * Memphis * Arlington, Tenn. Goodman has established himself as one of the top rookies in the nation, ranking top 10 in the conference in batting average (.332), RBIs (66), hits (53), runs scored (50), home runs (13), total bases (134) and slugging percentage (.585). Goodman’s 66 RBIs lead The American and rank 11th in the NCAA this season. Goodman has posted 24 multi-hit games and drove in multiple runs in 18 contests this season to lead the Tigers. He tallied three hits in six games and drove in four or more runs six times this season. NEWCOMER PITCHER OF THE YEAR Devon Roedahl * Jr. * RHP * Houston * Beaumont, Texas In 29 appearances this season, Roedahl has brought depth to Houston’s pitching staff. The junior righthander holds a 3.64 ERA with seven wins and four saves out of the bullpen. Holding batters to a .217 average, Roedahl has struck out 59 in 59.1 innings pitched, while surrendering 22 walks, 24 earned runs and 49 hits. Roedahl shutout his opponents in 17 outings. He ranks third in the league in wins and appearances and fifth in opponent’s batting average. COACH OF THE YEAR Cliff Godwin * ECU * Fifth Season After leading his team to a 42-13 overall record and 20-4 conference mark, Godwin earns his second-career American Coach of the Year nod (2015). In his fifth year at the helm of the Pirates, Godwin guided his team to its first American regular-season title and eight-straight American series wins. Godwin’s team became the first in American Athletic Conference history to win 20 league games, taking the top seed in the conference’s championship seven games ahead of second-place Cincinnati. AMERICAN NOTEBOOK3-for-5The American has had at least three NCAA tournament teams in each of the last five years.

American In The Field of 64Cincinnati, UConn and ECU were among the 64 teams announced to compete in the 2019 NCAA Baseball Cham-pionship. The American was one of seven conferences (SEC (10), ACC (8), Big Ten (5), Big 12 (5), Pac-12 (5) and Missouri Valley (3)) to have at least three teams punch tickets to the NCAA Baseball Championship.

While hosting the Greenville Regional for a second-straight year, ECU advanced to its second NCAA Super Regional in four seasons. Cincinnati won The American Championship to clinch the conference's automatic bid and earned its first NCAA berth since 1974. UConn earned its sixth NCAA regional bid since 2010. The Bearcats competed in the Corvallis Regional, while the Huskies advanced to the final of the Oklahoma City Regional.

National HostsECU became the third conference team to host an NCAA regional (2018, 2019). A conference team has hosted a regional in five of the past six seasons. Houston (2017, 2015) and Louisville (2014) are the two other American Athletic Conference teams to have hosted a regional over the league’s six-year span.

First Title In 52 YearsCincinnati won its first conference championship in 52 years with a 22-5 victory over UConn on May 26. The win gave the Bearcats their first NCAA berth since 1974 and first conference postseason title since 1967, when they won the Missouri Valley Conference crown. Cincinnati, which had been 0-10 all-time in The American Champion-ship and had lost 17 straight conference tournament games since 2008 before going 4-0 on the week, had been tabbed eighth of nine teams in The American’s preseason coaches’ poll.

Cincinnati rewrote the tournament's record book with 22 runs, 24 hits, four home runs and a 17-run margin of victory, wrapping an impressive offensive showing in which the Bearcats scored a tournament-record 51 runs in their four games. Cincinnati hit a conference-record .390 during the week (60-for-154) after hitting .246 as a team in the regular season.

Think of The RatingsSeven of the nine American teams own top 100 RPI rank-ings. For the past three seasons, the league has boasted at least seven top-100 RPI programs.

Conference CallsThe American owns the fifth-best NCAA RPI ranking among the 31 Division I conferences this season. The league finished fourth in the RPI rankings in 2017 and 2018 and has been a top-6 RPI conference for the past six seasons.

PedigreeCurrent members of the American Athletic Conference have made a combined 16 appearances in the College World Series. Wichita State leads the conference with seven appearances, while UConn has made five. The Shockers won a national championship in 1989, while Houston was the national runner-up in 1967. The last team among The American’s current membership to reach the CWS was Tulane, which advanced to Omaha in 2005.

Houston and Louisville both advanced to the Super Re-gional round in the 2014 NCAA Championship, while ECU reached the Super Regionals in 2019 and 2016.

The American has one CWS appearances to its credit. Louisville advanced to Omaha in 2014, when the Cardinals competed in the conference.

The Sum of Its PartsThe nine American Athletic Conference members have made a combined 155 appearances in the NCAA Champi-onship, including the 2019 season’s three bids. ECU has made 30 appearances, followed by Wichita State (27), Tulane (21), UConn (21) and Houston (21), USF (13), UCF (12), Cincinnati (six) and Memphis (five).

Kuchmaner’s Perfect GameECU sophomore LHP Jake Kuchmaner tossed the 28th perfect game in NCAA Division I history. He struck out eight batters, allowing no hits, runs, or walks in a 3-0 win at Maryland on March 17. Retiring all 27 hitters he faced, Kuchmaner recorded at least one strikeout in seven frames with two in the eighth.

A week prior to his perfect-game performance, Kuch-maner came one out away from registering a no-hitter in a 3-2 win at then-No. 10 Ole Miss. He struck out nine batters and took a no-hitter into the ninth inning (8.2 innings) before giving up his only hit of the day with two down in the final frame. He was named National Pitcher of the Week for two-consecutive weeks for his tremendous back-to-back starts.

Davis Demolishes Records Houston first baseman and designated hitter Joe Davis left his mark in American Athletic Conference history at the plate. He owns the league’s all-time career records in hits (288), RBIs (223), home runs (53), total bases (503), doubles (52), games played (235) and RBIs per game (0.95). Davis is a four-time American All-Conference selection and two-time conference Player of the Week. Davis was drafted by the Boston Red Sox.

Hammerin' Hoese Tulane third baseman Kody Hoese, The American’s Player of the Year, was named to seven All-America teams after establishing himself as one of the conference’s all-time top hitters. Leading the league with a .391 batting average to end the season, he ranked among the top 20 in the nation in nine offensive categories, and finished second in the country in total bases (183) and slugging percent-age (.779). Hoese set American single-season records in home runs (23), total bases (183), slugging percentage (.779) and runs scored (72). A two-time American Player of the Week selection, Hoese was named National Hitter of the Week by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). He was named one of 25 semi-finalists for the 2019 Golden Spikes Award and one of 26 semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy. Hoese was drafted in the MLB's first round at No. 25 overall by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

A Quartet of Champions Four teams have won the American Athletic Conference baseball title. Houston (2014 and 2017) and ECU (2015 and 2018) have captured two, while UConn won the title in 2016 and Cincinnati claimed the 2019 title. The Cou-gars own the best conference tournament record with a 14-7 mark. All four of these teams are the only current American members to reach the title game.

• Head coach Jim Penders was voted the Northeast Coach of the Year by the ABCA and Diamond Sports. In his 16th year at the helm of the Huskies, Penders earned the award for the third time in his career and first time since the 2011 season.

• Houston closer Fred Villarreal ended the season leading The American in appear-ances (33) and ERA (2.29), finishing third in the conference with 10 saves.

• Collin Sullivan struck out seven in 9.0 in-nings of work and held Wichita State to two hits in a 2-0 shutout win over the Shockers. Sullivan retired the side in order five times, issuing three walks and tossing 120 pitches in his second-career complete-game perfor-mance.

• Goodman finished the year ranked top 10 in The American in hits (78), runs scored (51), home runs (13), RBIs (67), total bases (137) and slugging percentage (.573).

• Rookie Hudson Haskin was named to four Freshmen All-America teams. Haskin hit .372 with 19 doubles, 10 home runs, four triples and 52 RBIs.

• Eric Wedge was named the head baseball coach at Wichita State. Wedge, who was a catcher for the Shockers from 1987-89 and earned first team All-America honors in 1989, is the 22nd head coach in the history of Shocker baseball.

• Senior Mason O'Brien was named to The American's All-Tournament team after hitting .333 with six hits, two doubles, two homers, seven RBIs, 14 total bases and a .778 slugging percentage in the Shockers' four tournament contests.

Weekly AwardsThe American names a Player and Pitcher of the Week each Monday during the season. Winners are chosen from nominations provided by conference sports information directors. The information will be available from the conference office via release as well as on the league website.

Annual AwardsThe American Athletic Conference will name first and second all-conference teams as well as a Player of the Year, Pitcher of the Year, Newcomer Position Player of the Year, Newcomer Pitcher of the Year and Coach of the Year following the conclusion of the regular season. The awards are chosen by a vote of the league’s eight head coaches and will be announced May 20.
