Who We AreThe American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS),

founded in 1986, is an individual membership society composedof pharmaceutical scientists who have joined together to serve

the public and their own common professional interests. AAPS

currently boasts more than 13,500 members. AAPS is not a trade

organization. AAPS is a non-profit organization that serves as an

    educational, scientific and scholarly body.

AAPS offers vital benefits to the pharmaceutical scientists who

    constitute its membership, including: two annual meetings;

numerous conferences, workshops, symposia and other networking

    opportunities; print publications; student chapters; Career Center;

Distance Learning and online initiatives such as The AAPS Journal

    and AAPS PharmSciTechTM scientific journals.

AAPS recognizes its responsibility to support and encourage high

standards of education for pharmaceutical scientists and to actively

participate in the international scientific community.

Snapshot ofAAPS MembersMembership is open to any individual who supports and is

willing to contribute to the objectives of the association. AAPSmembers come from industry, academia, government and private

institutions. Members are engaged in research, teaching, product

development, quality control, clinical testing, regulatory affairs,

economic issues, administration, management, and more.

Drug Design and Discovery (DDD) encourages the generation of knowledge concerning the chemistry,

biochemistry, and pharmacological actions of synthetic and naturally

    occurring medicinal agents.

Physical Pharmacy and Biopharmaceutics (PPfocuses on a quantitative understanding of the intrinsic properties

of the molecule and the interacting biological system, enabling the

selection of developable drug candidates and the identification of

potential strategies for optimal drug delivery.

Formulation Design and Development (FDD) unites multiple scientific disciplines in order to share experimental

results, consider new formulation and dosage form technologies, and

discuss issues and concerns regarding the design and development o

    formulations/drug products for small molecules.

Manufacturing Science and Engineering (MSE)composed of scientists and engineers interested and involved in

the application and advancement of science and technology to the

manufacture of pharmaceutical and pharmaceutically related produc

    Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics and

Drug Metabolism (PPDM) provides a forum toexamine issues related to the biopharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, drug metabolism and transport of pharmaceutic

    products andtherapies.

Regulatory Sciences (RS) analyses information onproduct performance, addresses issues regarding drug law and

resultant regulations, and promotes science-based regulations to

help drug regulatory agencies protect public health and safety.

    What Does a Pharmaceutical

Scientist Do?Pharmaceutical scientists discover and develop innovative drugs that save millionsof lives and improve the quality of life for many others. They have a broad base

of scientific knowledge and are employed by pharmaceutical companies; work as

researchers and professors at universities, as regulatory scientists for agencies like

the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP), and as

researchers for government agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

What are the Pharmaceutical Sciences? The pharmaceutical sciences combine a broad range of scientific disciplines that are critical to the discovery and

development of new drugs and therapies. AAPS classifies the pharmaceutical sciences into the following categories:

Analysis and Pharmaceutical Quality (APQ) provides a forum for the exchange of information pertaining to

analytical techniques, regulatory and compendial issues, and

    assurance of quality.

Biotechnology (BIOTEC) enables individuals frommultiple scientific disciplines to address issues, share information

and experimental findings, and provide education for research,

development, and commercialization of new biopharmaceuticals.

    Clinical Pharmacology andTranslational Research (CPTR)

    provides the clinical research dimension

    within the comprehensive range of

    pharmaceutical sciences and is concerned

with issues related to the clinical use

    of pharmaceuticals.
