The Views of the Chairman

Good afternoon everyone and welcome toTheobalds Lane. I would like to extend a specialwelcome to everyone from Tooting & Mitcham FCand to today's match officials. I hope you enjoyyour short stay with us. We are one of only a few Bostik League matchestoday , and so a chance to steal a march on theteams around us.  Our last two games have been chalk & cheese incomparison, sitting in the rain at Molesey watchingthe team labour to a 1-0 win was hard work, though of course I was pleased with the threepoints to keep us in third place in the table. Weimproved in the Velocity Trophy on Monday nightwhen a much changed team put Aveley FC to thesword.  The changes keep everyone in the squad on theirtoes. I have to say I enjoy my meetings with Craigand find it refreshing to hear Craig's views onperformances.

He never complains about officials, preferring to see histeam deliver without needing to worry about things theycan't change. Indeed the referees to date havecommented on the enthusiasm and also how they haveenjoyed working with skipper Mark Hughes.  To mark Non League Day & try to widen the appeal ofCheshunt FC locally we have made today a Pay What YouWant day. It's new to us & we will have to assess howsuccessful it is afterwards, especially as we still have thecosts of the officials to cover, floodlights, food andstaffing.  Locally we are supporting the Army Cadets today & youwill meet some of the young people collecting fordonations to help them run the local unit. Please givegenerously, it is a local initiative and gives our local youthan exciting option to devote their spare time to, whilstlearning and developing their social, discipline &communication skills. Enjoy today’s game.

IN THE DUGOUT WITH

CRAIG EDWARDS

Good Afternoon & welcome to todays opponents Tooting & Mitcham FC.   Well what a difference a few days makes, performance wise the Molesey & Aveleygames were poles apart, however most importantly, the results were in the Ambersfavour.  I cannot say the same about the FA Trophy matches with Bedford town, wehad opportunities to be 2-0 up in the first match & the footballing Gods conspired todeny us, allowing Bedford back into the game, the replay was disappointing, but onthe run of play was probably the right result.  So lets concentrate on the positives,  we have won the last four league games andcruised into third place, we are well placed with matches coming up to consolidateon this, and challenge local neighbours Waltham Abbey, I note Stimmo got a leagueaward for their September performance, we need to even that up for starters. The team have continued to train well, cover for each other while we have injuries &work commitments and I am really pleased with the smiles we are seeing on & offthe pitch. Enjoy the Match ! Craig

TOOTING & MITCHAM FC

 – A BRIEF HISTORY

Tooting & Mitcham United FC was formed in 1932 whentwo local sides, Tooting Town and Mitcham Wanderersamalgamated, the club remaining in the London Leagueuntil joining the Athenian League in 1937. In 1938 theSurrey Senior Cup was won for the first time by beatingDulwich Hamlet 2-1. Wartime then brought a mixture offriendly matches and a league called the South EastCombination. The London Senior Cup was lifted in 1943when Dulwich Hamlet were defeated 5-4. When theSecond World War ended the club returned to theAthenian League and were Champions in 1950 and1955. They also reached the FA Cup First RoundProper for the first time in 1948 unluckily losing by agoal to nil at Millwall and in 1950 reached the FirstRound Proper again with their first ever home tie againstFootball League opposition Brighton & Hove Albion, losing 3-2. The club was invited to join the IsthmianLeague in 1956, the premier amateur league in theSouth, and they switched from playing in white shirts toblack and white stripes. That season saw the club reachthe FA Cup Second Round Proper losing to QueensPark Rangers. In the 1957-58 season they werecrowned Isthmian League Champions but were hit bytragedy when star goalkeeper Dave Moore was killed ina car crash soon after the title was won. In season1958-59 the club reached the 3rd round proper of theFA Cup for the first time in its history beating FootballLeague clubs Bournemouth and Northampton Town. Inthe third round they were drawn at home to NottinghamForest, one of the top clubs in the country, and led theFirst Division side 2-0 at half-time but a own goal and avery controversial penalty for handball enabled Forest toscramble a draw. In the replay the Midlands side won 3-0 played before a crowd of 42,362 and they went on tolift the FA Cup at Wembley. The 1959-60 campaign wasone of the best in the club’s history the Isthmian LeagueChampionship was won for the second time and Tootingreached four Cup Finals, winning two. The LondonSenior Cup was lifted as Bromley were beaten 5-0 andthe Surrey Senior Cup was also won when Tootingdefeated Walton & Hersham 3-0, great striker andNorthern Ireland International Paddy

Hasty getting a hat-trick. Paddy would also play forthe Great Britain Olympic team in the 1960 summerOlympics and was the last player to score a goal forTeam GB until 2012. Tooting were the first amateurside to reach the London Challenge Cup Final forover 30 years losing 2-1 to Chelsea at StamfordBridge. In March 1962 the club switched on theirbrand new floodlights and how bright they were, thegame against Arsenal was a classic as the Gunnerswere beaten 4-2 in a never to be forgotten evening. The following season the team had a record 11-0 winover Welton Rovers in the Amateur Cup, the Tooting& Mitcham side containing several England AmateurInternationals. Young goalkeeper Alex Stepney was alocal lad who had come through the Tooting ranksand at the end of the 1962-63 campaign he joinedMillwall and later played for Chelsea, ManchesterUnited and the full England side against Sweden, aproud moment for Tooting & Mitcham. Dario Gradi, who had an illustrious career as manager of CreweAlexandra over a long period of time, also played forthe Terrors in the early 1960’s. The 1974-75 seasonsaw the club reach the FA Cup first round proper anda dream home tie with Crystal Palace. The Terrorstook a first minute lead through Steve Grubb but theEagles hit back to win 2-1 in front of a 10,000 pluscrowd at Sandy Lane. The following season the clubunder the guidance of Roy Dwight had their best everrun in the FA Cup reaching the 4th round proper. After beating Romford and Leatherhead away theTerrors had to travel again to Swindon Town in theThird Round and soon found ourselves 2-0 down buta dramatic fight back saw Tooting snatch a draw. Inthe replay at a packed Sandy Lane Tooting had agreat 2-1 victory with Alan Ives scoring the winnerafter a fine solo run. In the 4th round the Terrors weredrawn away yet again with a long trip to Bradford Cityand despite a brave performance lost 3-1. The clubalso had their best ever run in the FA Trophy reachingthe quarter-final stage losing at eventual winnersScarborough by 1-0. The club won the Surrey SeniorCup three seasons on the trot in 1976, 1977 and1978 being the first club to achieve this. In 1983-84

Tooting finished in the bottom two of the IsthmianLeague but were saved from relegation as StainesTown did not have the required ground grading. However, there was no reprieve in the 1988-89campaign when the club were relegated for the firsttime in its history. In season 1992-93 Tooting won itsfirst trophy for many years at first team level when theylifted the Full Members Cup, beating Dorking by a goalto nil, scored by Micky Stephens. The 1996-97 seasonproved to be one of the worst in the club’s historyresulting in relegation to the Second Division. Bycontrast the 2000-01 campaign was the club’s best formany years as the 6th round of the FA Vase wasreached and defeat only came at the hands of eventualwinners Taunton Town. Even more importantly underthe guidance of Keith Boanas and Ian Hazel theRyman League Division Two Championship was wondespite an horrific backlog of fixtures. After many yearsof frustration and setbacks the club moved into its newhome at Imperial Fields for the start of the 2002-03season. After going close to promotion in 2005-06,losing to Tonbridge in the Play-offs, manager RichardCadette was replaced by the hugely experienced BillySmith (who was skipper of Tooting’s 1975-76 FA Cupside) and George Wakeling. In their first season theclub won both the London Senior Cup and the SurreySenior Cup and a fantastic unbeaten league run sawTooting reach the Play-off Final. Sadly this proved tobe a game too far as Hastings United won out by 2-0 atImperial Fields. However, the 2007-08 season wouldsee Tooting reach the Play-off Final again, this timeagainst Cray Wanderers, and a Paul Vines goalresulted in a welcome return to the Premier Divisionafter a gap of 19 years. The club also produced asuperstar by the name of Michail Antonio who camethrough the ranks and signed for Reading, and hassubsequently starred in the Championship forNottingham Forest and is now a regular on the scoresheet with West Ham United. In 2009-10 the teamreached the First Round Proper of the FA Cup after agap of many years with a trip to Stockport County butin a torrential rainstorm went down to a 5-0 defeat.Sadly at the end of the season Billy and George left theclub and Mark Beard was subsequently appointedmanager in May

2010. After a mediocre first season and a dismalstart to the 2011–12 season Beard was relieved ofhis position in December 2011 and former WestHam player Kenny Brown was appointed the newmanager. However, the results got worse andTooting were relegated at the end of the 2011–12season. The following seasons saw a succession ofmanagers (Roberto Forzoni, Jamie Martin and PhilSimpson) which cumulated in the club beingrelegated . For the 2013-14 season former Terrorscaptain Craig Tanner was appointed First TeamManager and was assisted by Adam Moriarty. Intheir first season Tooting finished in a creditable11th position. The 2014-15 season again saw theTerrors finish in 11th spot and reach the LondonSenior Cup Final losing to Hendon, but at the end ofthe campaign the club parted company with Craigand Adam. The new management team for the2015-16 season was former Reserve Team BossFrank Wilson as Manager with Mark Hams as hisassistant. In October Hams left the club to bereplaced by Paul Dale who became AssistantManager and First Team Coach having previouslybeen a manager of the Army football team, alsohaving served as Coach at Godalming Town.Tooting ended the 2015-16 season on a highbeating Hendon by 2 - 0 in front of a crowd of 480 inthe London Senior Cup Final at Imber Court. 2016-17 was the pinnacle of Tooting’s recentachievements, the club being crowned as RymanSouth Champions after a superb season ofentertaining football. The team amassed a total of105 points with 120 goals scored and won theleague on goal difference from Dorking Wanderers. They also broke numerous records on the way thatincluded a 14 game winning streak in a run where of15 matches undefeated. Star men for the teamduring that campaign were Billy Dunn with 25 goalsand fellow striker Mike Dixon with 23. ManagerFrank Wilson and his assistant Paul Dale werelooking to consolidate that success in the newBostik Premier division for the 2017-18 season.Paul subsequently left the club for a managementrole elsewhere and the Terrors highly respectedU23 coach Ashley Bosah was appointed asAssistant Manager and Head Coach in his place.

The Amber Scribe, Tony Madden writes forNon League Day........

It must be about five years since I started attendingnon-league football; five years in which I’ve learnt anawful lot about the game at this level and gained anappreciation of just how little I knew of the beautifulgame in the lower leagues. I started going as Igenuinely started to feel a bit embarrassed that I’dlived for fourteen years within a five minute walk ofCheshunt Football Club and yet I hadn’t bothered togo to a game. I hadn’t bothered because I was sureit had nothing to offer me. I was blinded by my ownarrogance, I had an Arsenal season ticket and haddone for years so what could I possibly get fromfootball at non-league level? The answer came likea bolt of lightning; I had everything to gain and thewhole experience was way beyond what I’dexpected. I always imagined crowds of anorakwearing geeks complete with Jack Duckworthglasses brandishing bartered old autograph booksfilled with the signatures of people I’ve never heardof! How wrong can you be? The stadium was quirky, but I found knowledgeable supporters who knew all Iknew and more, these guys knew their game, theywanted to talk football not transfer deals, they talkedabout players abilities not their wages. I found thatjust so refreshing and I still love that part of it. It hada further twist in that it also connected with me at aplaying level. It made me remember the fun ofplaying, remember the commitment and pain youhad to put in to get the best out of it. I didn’t think Icould play at this level or ever could have done but itdid remind me of the honesty of the level of thegame I had played at. Not every tackle was met witha mock scream and a fifty forward rolls, players tookthe tackles as part of the game and didn’t cheat atevery contact. It was fantastic, and I could connectwith it.

Non-league players seem to understand the fansand don’t regard them as an opportunity to practicetheir pomposity. No phones permanently wedged inthe ear, no headphones strategically placed to givethe impression that they’re far too important to talkto! Non-league players are a million miles awayfrom that rubbish. Ordinary working guys who takea beer off you and buy one back, managers andcoaches who actually do want to hear your opinionand shake your hand at the end of the day. During one of my first games I sat with a pint in myhand, something not allowed in the Premiership, right by the touch line when a shuddering tacklewent into the Cheshunt full back. I almost jumpedmyself but like the footballers I grew up watchingand had played with the Cheshunt player simplywinced and then got to his feet and struggled on. Inthat moment I knew I was watching something thatwas to do with me; something that I could relate toand appreciate. This was real football. The wholeexperience is what football is supposed to beabout. The crowd are so close to the teams and theofficials and the banter is never anonymous. Thereis no hiding in the crowd or shouting an obscenityyou don’t have to own. At this level you own it allwhether its good or bad its your property. I’ve heardbanter at games like I’ve never heard and seenlinesman and referees look across and laugh orwant to punch your lights out. Its brilliant. I’m still a season ticket holder at Arsenal but I doswap my ticket if there’s a Cheshunt game I want towatch and that on its own is an amazing turnaround for a higher league fan of nearly fifty years. The premier is too razzmatazz these days, itsoversold and over hyped, and most importantly itscompletely overpriced.

ONE COMMUNITY. ONE CLUB AMBERS

My club Cheshunt can’t afford the levels of luxuryor expansive developments of the stadia that iscommon place at a higher level, but its actuallybecause of that very characteristic that it has somany other benefits. The modern football touristfan may not get this quite so easily as the hardcorepre-premiership supporters but there’s no reasonthat they can’t understand that it is the game offootball itself which provides the spectacle and notcircus that goes with the higher level of the game. The feeling that you are supporting the grass rootsof the game is extremely rewarding and onceyou’ve embraced it your eyes are opened to afootball world where cash is king in a much morereal world and where your spirit and support aremuch more appreciated than they’ll ever be in theanonymous world of the higher league game. Toput it simply buying a football shirt, a scarf and ahat at Spurs or Arsenal ensures the club has anfinancial position to pay Johnny Footballer£150,000 a week. Buying the same set of kit atCheshunt helps us keep the club going andproviding a football resource within the communitythat is there for children, and adults alike. Thepicture in the lower leagues is a subtler one, amore intricately built one but it is every bit asexciting as an end product and if you haven’t givenit a try and you love football then now’s the time toput that right. Support Non-League Day and support football inthe Lower Leagues. . http://www.nonleagueday.co.uk/ •

The cost of one class A game at the Emirates wouldget me into eight Cheshunt home games and if you’rea football fan who wants to take the family that’s areally important factor. How many families are able toafford £150 per game in tickets, and then the cost ofa day’s food, drink and merchandising it has priceditself away from the average fan and non-leaguerepresents the opportunity to return the game to theworking-class people who have deserted it becauseof the cost. For those who think that the game will lackatmosphere and passion I’d say think again. I‘vejumped out of my seat at Cheshunt in the last fewyears and enjoyed getting behind The Ambers everybit as much as I have at Arsenal. One anecdote Inever tire of recounting relates to the chairman of theclub who after telling an irate opposition fan to sit andbehave after he’d been delivering some questionablelanguage was met with a quite threatening retort of ‘who the hell are you’? The response ‘I’m the bloodychairman now sit down’! Now you don’t get that in afootball league ground too often! On the day wecelebrate non-league day, which I always thinkshould be referred to as lower league football day it’sso important to get the contrast between football at ahigher level and football in the lower leagues. Thecontrast shouldn’t be measured in wealth andgrandeur because to do so simply isn’t fair.

It took Cheshunt 15 minutes toregister their first goal of the evening. Agreat defensive header from Joe Elliott ledto a corner. From the corner the ballricocheted around in a goal mouthscramble, the ball eventually fell for EmielAiken who tapped in from a few yards out.The Millers lacked that zip in the first halfin what was a below-par off night &Cheshunt took full advantage of that.Cheshunt winger Ali Chantery had aneffort from the edge of the area and hisshot went an inch wide of the right handpost. Cheshunt came again when centreforward Sanusi muscled his way in with achance, his effort fired over the crossbar.

Aveley had a half chance as Alex Teniolafired at goal after a pass from ShadNgandu, but Bobby Mason just managed tohold on That handling from Bobby Mason proved tobe good for Cheshunt as they gotthemselves a corner and after crossing it toSanusi, the tallest player on the pitch, hehad the simple task of nodding into the goaland doubling the visitors lead. It got worsefor Aveley on the 41st minute as AliChantery fired an absolute rocket into thecorner of the goal, no chance for anykeeper keeping that one out. Aveley 0-3Cheshunt. David Hughes, who wasdefinitely not at fault for any of the goals, was on hand for Cheshunt not to make itfour as he brilliantly tipped wide a NickySymons drive goalwards

The Millers had a change at half timewith Harry Gibbs brought on to try andcombat Sanusi's height. Joe Elliott was moved over to right backand the 16 year old started to get downthat right hand side really well. He playeda couple of fantastic passes across thepitch over the left hand side, he got tothe by-line but saw his cross/cut backpicked out the air by the Cheshuntkeeper. Aveley were then denied a penalty, former Amber Marcus Milner got in thearea and his trickery took the ball awayfrom his marker, and then went over, butthe referee adjudged it to be a dive and abooking too. As Aveley tried to getforward they left spaces in behind andCheshunt's lightning pace from thebench exploited those spaces down theflanks. Kojo Awotwi found Matt Rowell at

the back post but he couldn't find thegoal. With ten minutes to go Cheshunt gottheir fourth and it was a lovely curlingfinish into the far corner from OluAkinsanya cutting in from left to right.Aveley 0-4 Cheshunt. This one puts Olulevel on seven for the season withMaster Marksman Jason Hallett, weshould expect fireworks when hereturns ! Cheshunt finished the game with acouple of good chances, but anothersuperb save from David Hughes asYvan Jourdan fired towards goal. Full Time | Aveley 0-4 Cheshunt. (Match 12,755)Wednesday 19th September 2018.Royston Town 6 Histon 3 (Thurlow NunnYouth League Cambridge Division) att 60approx. With both the SSML and the UCLhaving only 20 clubs in their leagues thisseason it means that there probably aren’tgoing to be quite so many mid-weekgames to watch. So I’m going to bewatching more non-first team games, untilthe closing weeks of the season of coursewhen clubs will still have backlogs offixtures to fit in! However if all games arelike this youth match tonight, then youwon’t find me complaining. Unexpectedlight rain throughout most of this matchmade the excellent pitch a bit ‘greasy’ butthis just seemed to add to the fun of theevening. In the first half the Crows weren’tat their best. But on 26 minutes they didhit the bar and then the post from therebound.

Histon then raced down the other end andtook the lead. Then on 38 minutes theyextended their lead from the spot after theref was adamant that a powerful shot waspushed away by a Royston player. But atthat pace it seemed more like ball to hand. How would the Crows respond, if at all, asHiston had played well in the first half?Well, quite quickly actually. On 49 minutesthe Crows pulled a goal back when theball was hooked over the keeper eventhough he wasn’t that far off his line. Aminute later the equaliser came when thescorer was able to round the keeper. On72 minutes the ref gave Royston a spotkick, which was converted. I can’t tell youwhat he gave it for though. It’s not asecret. It’s just that I didn’t spot it! Thenthree minutes later Histon made it 3-3 witha 25 yard direct free kick. But within aminute Royston regained the lead. ThenRoyston brought on a sub and on this mildnight he was the first player I’ve seen thisseason wearing gloves. What’s he goingto do when it gets really cold? After thisHiston faded a little and further Roystongoals on 85 and 88 minutes finished themoff. On the night the Crows deserved theirwin, but only based on their second halfperformances. On the other hand Histon’sgoal celebrations were far better thanRoyston’s! 76. (12,756) Thursday 20thSeptember 2018. Hitchin Town 0 GraysAthletic 1 (FA Youth Cup 1st QualifyingRound) att 71. This goes into the pot forselection for the worst game I’ve seen (sofar) this season. The very strong wind mayhave had something to do with it, butsitting under the shelter of the main standit wasn’t noticeable.

In fact from here it was pretty much aswarm as recent other nights had been.I soon felt obliged to move seats whena gentleman sitting in front of meaccused the lino in front of him ofcoaching the players. I heard nothingof the sort and if this was going to bethe first of his outbursts then I didn’twant to be anywhere near him. In thefirst half Hitchin were technically thebetter side although Grays were verydangerous on the break and therewere many. But the truth of the matterwas that neither side looked likescoring and throughout the wholematch I don’t recall either keepermaking a save. Hitchin in particularseemed to have no recognisedforwards, or even unrecognised ones! But there was a goal, scored by Grayson the stroke of half time, when adiagonal, across the face of goal shotwent in just inside the far post. It wasscored by their ‘big name’ player, namely Adetukumbo Sotoyimbo! Afterthe break not a lot happened. Hitchindid try for the equaliser and Grays hadefforts as well, but none troubled therespective keepers. Unfortunately mostof Hitchin’s efforts fell to one of theirsubs who should have scored at leasta hattrick. But when the ball came hisway he struggled to even make contactwith it, causing one Hitchin official (atleast) to wonder if he was the worstever player to wear a Hitchin Townshirt! There was ten and a half minutesadded on time at the end, but to be fairto Gray’s it was for injuries, mainlycramp, rather than for timewasting.

77. (12,757) Friday 21st September 2018.Ely City 1 Thetford Town 2 (Thurlow NunnLeague Premier Division) att 137. Looking at the league tables before thestart, the smart money was on an Ely win,as they would remain above Thetford, evenif they lost tonight. The first half yielded nogoals but the game was still worthwatching. Both sides were putting a lot ofeffort into it, but it was Thetford whoseemed to have more possession.Furthermore their probing forwards weremaking life a bit uncomfortable for Ely at theback. Meanwhile the ref was rarely troubledthroughout the whole match, which wasreally only lacking in goals to turn it into avery good match. These arrived after thebreak. On 50 minutes Thetford took thelead when from a corner the inrushingcentre half powered home a header. Thisgoal brought the game to life and both sidesupped their game now, Then on 66minutes Thetford scored again and it was aslightly curious goal and one which wouldn’thave pleased the home management team. The ball was played in over the top of aboutfour Ely defenders, standing in a line on theedge of the area and they never moved, presumably believing that the player wasoffside. Quite rightly the flag never went up.Said defenders remained stationary and thescorer blasted the ball past the keeper atabout 100mph! Thetford could have andperhaps should have scored more, but theEly keeper made some good saves to keepthem at bay. Ely had given enough todeserve a goal and on 87 minut they didscored. @brianbuck66
