Film, television and live event producer for the past 25years, Steve Wolf is bringing his “Science in the Movies” showto the Petroleum Museum for several events September 12-15.

Wolf is President of Wolf Stuntworks and founder of “Sci-ence in the Movies,” an organization that teaches physics andchemistry through stunt demonstrations. He passionately en-gages students and teachers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engi-neering and Math) concepts through his shows. Using theentertainment industry’s ability to capture and hold students’attention, he helps them master the science they will need tosolve tomorrow’s challenges.

“I use my background as a stunt and special effects coordi-nator, working with stars, including Tom Cruise and Al Pacino, toteach science,” Wolf said. The audience benefits from seeing sci-ence in action and gains understanding and appreciation in afun, interactive show. Students who see the “Science in theMovies” presentation often score 30 percent higher on sciencetests.

His feature film work includes: “The Firm,” “Three Men anda Baby,” “Do the Right Thing,” “The Last Boy Scout,” “TheClient,” “The Jungle Book,” “Hustle and Flow,” and “Castaway.”Steve’s television credits include “All My Children,” “Law &

Order,” “America’s Most Wanted,” “Rescue 911,” “The David Let-terman Show,” and Whitney Houston’s music videos. He re-ceived an Academy Award for his performance in “Palingenesis”and directed “Bending Light.”

He has also worked on some incredible engineering chal-lenges including determining thecause of the fire that destroyed theHindenburg, developing the finalplan to cap the leak of the BPblowout in the Gulf of Mexico, in-venting the first vehicle specificallydesigned to kill forest fires, and de-signing the protective hardware thathouses the Hobby-Eberly telescope

Fowler Sees Other Uses for Oil

While most people think of the oil and gas industry’s end result as a fuel for vehicles,Nick Fowler focuses daily on its many other uses, such as dispos-able baby diapers.

An Odessa native, he joined the Petroleum Museum Board of Trustees inJanuary. Unlike many other board members who are involved in some aspect offinding, producing or marketing oil and gas, Fowler is the head of REXtac LLC, apetrochemical plant.

“We are considered far downstream but we are highly dependent on theoil and gas industry,” Fowler explained. “We make polymers that are used inthe assembly of baby diapers, feminine hygiene products, disposable medicalarticles, and automotive and general manufacturing assembly.”

REXtac’s products are “sold out at capacity,” he said. The company’s only manufacturingplant is located in Odessa, but also operates offices in Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles andTokyo. “I’m gone half the time trying to sell the products.”

When Fowler was asked to join the Museum board, he saw the institution as a place that’s“all about the science, engineering and geology. The petroleum industry is a wide-open business.There is opportunity if you work hard and if you are honest. You can start out and achieve some-thing.”

Born and raised in Odessa, Fowler graduated from Odessa High in 1969, and later from RiceUniversity. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years and returned to West Texas where he earnedhis MBA degree from University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

“Being asked to serve on the Museum board is an honor,” he said. “The Museum is impor-tant to the Permian Basin and the petroleum industry, and I want to be able to say I helped.”

Every two years, the Petroleum Pioneers hold their reunion and 2017 is the year! On Friday,October 6, Petroleum Pioneers from across West Texas will gather at the Petroleum Museum toreminisce and enjoy programs and lunch. The morning begins at 8:30 with registration and cof-fee.

Dr. Diana Hinton, UTPB Chair of Business and History, will present the morning’s historicalprogram at 10 a.m. There will be a short business meeting at 11 a.m. and the luncheon willbegin at 12 noon. Keynote Speaker will be Scott Tinker, Director of the Bureau of Economic Geol-ogy, UT. Tours of the Museum will be offered from 2 to 4 p.m. If you have been in the petroleumindustry for 20 or more yours, you are eligible to join the Pioneers and enjoy the fun. The Minerva #1 mine was a former zinc and fluorspar mine lo-cated north of Cave-in-Rock, Illinois. The Minerva Oil Company dis-covered the Minerva #1 orebody in 1940. It was the deepestoperational mine in the Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar District. Speci-mens from this mine included sphalerite, calcite, dolomite, stron-tianite and witherite, as well as fluorite. The abundant presence ofhydrocarbons caused fluorite crystals from this mine to often formin brown or pale yellow groups. This specimen shows a late-stageglassy overgrowth of transparent, strikingly zoned fluorite. The Pe-troleum Museum is proud to have this interesting and beautifulpiece as part of its permanent collection.

The remains of rod-line actuated pumping units and their collection are among the mostinteresting of the major artifacts to be found in shallow oil regions. Walking into an oil-field pumped by a central power unit was like an obstacle course. Rod lines seemingly

suspended everywhere and tripods, pipes, pump jacks, and other devices – and the massive cen-tral power unit itself filled the landscape.

The word “power,” in oilfield jargon, stands for the gears and eccentrics, the engine – thewhole assembly. Instead of using separate motors to operate pumping units at various well loca-tions, central powers allowed many pump jacks to be operated from a single machine. The numberof wells that could be handled varied according to their depth, the fluid volume being lifted, andthe horsepower of the central power.

It is fixed out of center to a revolving shaft. This allows it to convert circular into reciprocatingrectilinear motion. In describing the motion of an eccentric, geoscientist Keith H. Patton offers thefollowing comparison: "…you might use the analogy of a bicycle pedal and sprocket lying on its sidewith the rod connected to the pedal. I think that will give a mental image of how circular motioncan be converted into linear reciprocating motion."

“Housed” in the Museum’s Oil Patch is a central power unit: a large bandwheel manufacturedby National Supply Company circa 1935 and powered by a Superior pumping engine. The 18-footwheel-generated power unit ran 12 small pump jacks on the Burk Royalty O’Neill oil lease, near Im-perial, Pecos County, circa 1940. This central power unit was gifted to the Petroleum Museum byBill J. and H.E. Graham.

Alongside this central power unit is a Na-tional Model-D Underpull pump jack. The rod-lineactuated pump jack uses gears and a single crankarm to transfer rotary motion to back and forthmotion. The unit was used in the 1920s to testand pump a single well 1,400 feet deep. Thepower source was donated by Marshall R. YoungOil Company and the pump jack by Services Oiland Gas Corporation.

Another multiple-pump jack power unit isdisplayed alongside the walkway between the Museum patio and the Oil Patch. This smaller unitdrives two pump jacks off the gears and sprockets housed inside a shelter. The pump jack was an-other one of George Abell’s acquisitions back in the 1960s. With the help of Bridges EquipmentCompany, Bison Drilling and Lee Lewis Construction Company, it is now a simulated operation ex-hibit.

These rod-line actuated pump jacks are usually at a standstill; however, James White, MuseumFacilities Manager, takes every opportunity he can to make the systems "come alive."

Education Learning Heats Up During Summer Months

Summer Science, Movie Camps Getting StartedGet ready for a fun-filled, science packed summer with

the Petroleum Museum as our Summer Science Camps andMovie Camps will be starting soon! These events are a greatway to keep your child excited about learning all summerlong!

Movie Camps are the perfect retreat on hot June Tues-days for children ages 5 and up. During the month of June,we will be hosting Movie Camps every Tuesday with two timeoptions. One session will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noonand another from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. Each Movie Camp willfeature a movie, popcorn, experiments and games. Cost perchild is $5, and adults who would like to join the fun are free.

Movies are: “Finding Dory,” June 6; “Trolls,” June 13;“Moana,” June 20; and “SING” June 27.

During the month of July, we will be hosting five weeks

of four-day Summer Science Camps! Topics will include Ro-botics, STEM Art, and Earth and Space. The camps will beheld Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 12 noon. Theextended amount of time allows for in-depth exploration ofeach topic as students engage in age-appropriate, exciting ex-periments and creative activities that they will be able tobuild upon each day. The cost per student is $80 for Petro-leum Museum members; $100 for non-members.

Teachers can GO WILD with us this summer as we partnerwith Sibley Nature Center to host our upcoming Teacher Work-shop, Project WILD, which will enable educators in the sur-rounding areas to enhance their wildlife-based curriculum inthe classroom.

Project WILD is a program of the Texas Parks and WildlifeDepartment and is one of the most widely-used conservationand environmental education programs among educators ofstudents in kindergarten through high school. Based on thepremise that young people and educators have a vital interestin learning about our natural world, Project WILD encouragesstudents and teachers to make informed decisions concerningwildlife and the environment. The workshop will be held on Fri-day, June 30, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and will be open for K-12educators. Six hours of CPE credits will be given for participa-tion. The Museum is excited to announce the expansionof its Outreach across the community! The develop-

Engaging in community events is al-ways a great experience for us and awonderful way for us to share the Petro-leum Museum with the Permian Basin.

CRITTER CORNER:Meet Thelma and LouiseJoin us in welcoming the newest members of the Critter Corner: Thelma

and Louise, the black-tailed prairie dogs. Thelma and Louise are a spunkyduo that will enhance our increasingly popular Animal Outreach Program.

They will aide in teaching children and adults about grassland ecosystems, adapta-tions, mammal characteristics, and more!

Black-tailed prairie dogs are charismatic rodents that live on North America'sprairies and open grasslands. Prairie dogs live in underground burrows, extensivetunnels and chambers marked by many mounds of packed earth at their surfaceentrances. Their burrows have defined nurseries, sleeping quarters, and even toi-lets. They also feature listening posts near exits, so animals can safely keep tabs onthe movements of predators outside. They live in larger communities, called towns,which may contain hundreds of animals.

Prairie dogs emerge from their burrows in daylight to forage and feed ongrasses, roots, and seeds. They have advanced communication methods, which in-clude over 120 different vocalizations that have different meanings. These vocaliza-tions include barks, chirps, yips, and much more. New research has revealed theextensive nature of their communication which includes utilizing adjectives to de-scribe various movements and threats throughout the community.

Thelma and Louise are a wonderful addition for us here at the Petroleum Mu-seum! Stop by and meet our furry friends! They might even welcome you with afriendly yip!

As a part of their Senior CapstoneProject, three young men fromGeorge H.W. Bush New Tech OdessaHigh School helped build and imple-ment Lego Robotics curriculum thisspring. The young men aided in creat-ing games and challenges for theBuilding Bots program held here atthe Museum as well as preparing anoutreach session for Zavala Elemen-tary School in Odessa.
