after listening to people such as Dr Ross Tucker, Gary Kirsten, Prof Tim Noakes
and Dr Wansink at a health conference this year, we decided to form a team of
people who share the same desire of a better life style.
The amashova was an experiment with participants from semi-professionals to
absolute novices all sharing the same idea – live better and hopefully longer.
The staff bought bikes, they bought bikes for their wives and children and we
all did it under the franke brand with customers.
It was a great day that went down so well under the supervision of our
marketing team under the leadership of Leigh-anne Robertson that we could
call it “smooth cycling”. We thank Leigh-anne, Bianca and Lerina for going the
extra mile to arrange the event.
Next year, 2014, will be the centenary of CMP/franke and we are working on
several events to celebrate the occasion with our staff and customers and we
hope to see many more participants .
Thank you for sharing a special day with us.

To live healthy is an option for each and everyone, and the opposite is also true
I suppose but somewhat foolish.
It took the loss of my best friend to cancer to realise that it is a huge privilege
to be alive and well these days. Yes, I had to dig very deep to find a solution
that would start to address this problem of an unhealthy lifestyle.

A HISTORY OF AMASHOVA
The history of this, the oldest ‘classic’ cycle race in the country, is
one of dogged determination to succeed in spite of the odds. The idea
of having a bicycle race on the route of the world famous Comrades
Marathon, between Pietermaritzburg and Durban, was the dream of
veteran springbok cyclist Dave Wiseman and his friend Tony McMillan.
Realizing that they needed media support to make the venture fly; they
enlisted the help of fred forge at the Natal Mercury. forge assured the
duo that he would give the race publicity if they went ahead, and with
that assurance they approached Pick n Pay who agreed to sponsor the
event.
The relevant authorities, however, did not share the enthusiasm of
this visionary group. The NPa felt one “day long” event was enough
and wouldn’t budge. finally, a local politician, who saw the value to
Durban of hosting such a race, forced the traffic authorities’ hand. so,
reluctantly, permission was granted for the first race to take place in
1986. The race was called ‘The Natal Mercury/Pick n Pay National
Classic.’ The traffic authority increased gave permission for only 150
riders to participate.
In the years that followed, the traffic authority gradually increased the
allowable participation from this small group to 350, then 500, then 550
and so forth. In addition, these cyclists would have to qualify for the race
by doing other events at a fairly high average speed. Only 4 hours was
given for all to finish. The impression created by these restrictions
was that this was a race for only the most serious cyclists. The bitter
resistance by the traffic authorities toward the race continued until
1998. at that time, just over 800 riders were doing the event. The
growth of the race was slow when compared with what was happening
Dubbed the safest cycle race in KZN with full road closure, the106km Amashova Classic Cycle Race attracts over10 000 cyclists nationally.
in cycling throughout the rest of the country. an approach was made to the
new local government to relax the restrictive conditions to the race. The race
organizer showed the revenue generation potential to tourism in the city to
Durban’s Mayor, Councilor Obed Mlaba. The mayor immediately endorsed the
event, and the profile of the race changed completely. The route changed from
the unexciting Walter Gilbert Road to right outside the City Hall in West street.
In order to accommodate this dramatic finish, the Western freeway had to
be closed down. Kwazulu Natal’s Transport Minister, sbu Ndebele was quick
to see that this happened. The culmination of this lobbying and planning has
produced one of the finest finishes in south african road racing! With these
changes, numbers and interest in the race grew dramatically. In addition, the
introduction of one of the country’s top sponsors went a long way to making
the shova, as it is fondly known as KZN’s biggest cycling race and the only
cycle race with the City’s endorsement giving it full road closure.

Good Morning All
We all arrived as colleagues and customers
and left as friends. Great idea to use a fitness
exercise to enhance the Franke name and
brand. Listening to the conversation in the
combi after Saturday morning presentations
about the size of the factory, the processes
and the neatness of the factory, I felt proud
to be part of the Franke team, and I know our
customers have a better insight into the how,
when and why.
At dinner on Saturday night, everybody had
water in front of them, (this is one for the
books). the more adventurers ordered cola
tonics Schalk’s presentation was discussed
about eating with the eyes, this I must add
changed drastically at Sunday night dinner but
still well within limits.
Thank you Schalk for the idea and all you have
done, thank you Leigh Anne and Bianca for all
the organising, thank you Lerina for being in the
cold on Sunday and welcoming us back, thank
you Dylan for being a safe taxi driver, Thank You
all again, it was great.
If the opportunity arise again, I will be there as
I have a personal score to settle with Mister
Amashova.

On saturday morning the “franke Team-riders” consisting of franke staff and valued customers assembled at the headquarters of franke south africa in Mobeni,
Durban. after loading their bicycles onto the 106km and 35km trailers, Ian Bernade, Operations Manager, took our visitors on an informative factory tour, where
our customers got to see firsthand the processes involved in the manufacturing of our Washroom, Kitchen and Zip products. To end off the morning, schalk
shared some word of encouragement and motivation , as well as called in nurse Nicci who provided the “non-WaDa approved boosters” as well as EPO (evening
primrose oil of course!) to our Cycling Team.

a super early 4:00am wake up call started off the festivities for sundays race. Kessie Naicker and Dylan Hopewell were here to meet the cyclists at franke
Headquarters and by 5.00am were on the road headed for the 35km and 106 km starts respectively. Meanwhile, Leigh-anne Robertson and her team were
at the Moses Mabida stadium setting up the franke Hospitality tent. Our cyclists enjoyed a morning at the hospitality tent after the race. Refreshments were
served, as well complimentary foot and back massages to sooth their wary limbs. The dismal weather on the day could certainly not dampen the atmosphere and
excitement felt by all who where there. Goals were achieved and friendships were made. altogether the day was a great success and enjoyed by all!
