Tha mi a’ sgrìobhadh seo air an latha a chaidh barrachd fiosrachaidh mun Ghàidhlig a sgaoileadh bho bhuilean a’ Chunntais-sluaigh. Ged a sheall àireamhan a chaidh fhoillseachadh na bu tràithe sa bhliadhna gu robh an crìonadh sa chànan air fàs nas slaodaiche (deagh naidheachd agus ’s dòcha mar bhuil air foghlam meadhan-Gàidhlig), tha an dàta a nochd an-diugh a’ sealltainn gu bheil an àireamh sa chiad de luchd-labhairt anns na sgìrean traidiseanta gu lèir anns na h-Eileanan an Iar air a dhol sìos. Welcome to the Autumn Edition of the Comann nam Pàrant newsletter.

I am writing this on the day that more information on Gaelic was released from the Census results. Although numbers released earlier in the year indicated that the decline in the language is slowing (good news and probably as a result of Gaelic-medium education), the data released today shows a decline in the percentage of speakers in all the traditional speaking areas of the Western Isles. There will be much discussion, rightly so, as to what can be done to reverse this trend. Organisations will strive to increase the number of people who speak Gaelic through numerous initiatives; the Local Authority could make Gaelic-medium education the norm for all children in the Western Isles, there could be more support for parents to use Gaelic in the home and community with their children, more activities through the medium of Gaelic for children and young people, Gaelic church services and so on. But any intervention is going to have limited success unless all Gaelic speakers take responsibility - use the language and pass it on to the next generation of speakers. The

challenge is to persuade Gaelic speakers that their language is worth saving for future generations.

Bun Sgoil Innis an Uillt aig 25 bliadhna! Bun Sgoil Innis an Uillt reaches its quarter century

Tha 2013 a’ comharrachadh 25 bliadhna on dh’fhosgail an Aonad Ghàidhlig aig Bun-sgoil Innis an Uillt ann an Drochaid an Eusbaig. Thòisich an aonad ann an 1988 le 9 sgoilear agus tha sin air fàs gu 44 an-dràsta, le 22 san sgoil-àraich airson gluasad suas. Chan eil Gàidhlig sam bith anns a’ mhòr-chuid de na teaghlaichean. Tha an aonad air a bhith na dheagh naidheachd shoirbheachail ann a bhith a’ cur air adhart foghlam dà-chànanach ann an Siorrachd Dhùn Bhreatainn an Ear, agus tha e a’ dol bho mheud gu meud – an-dràsta, tha an sgoil-àraich Ghàidhlig co-cheangailte ris an sgoil luma-làn, agus tha coltas ann gun tèid àireamh nan sgoilear Gàidhlig an àird san ùine a tha romhainn.

Am measg nan tachartasan a chaidh a chur air dòigh airson a’ cheann-là a chomharrachadh, bha cuirm anns an sgoil air 20 Sultain, a sheall dhan mhòr-shluagh na bha de thàlant san sgoil, an dà chuid an-diugh agus an-dè. Chuir an Sgoil-àraich agus a’ Bhun-sgoil air dòigh deagh oidhche de sheinn, dannsa agus dealbh-cluich. Thàinig an teaghlach Rothach, a chleachd a bhith nan sgoilearan san aonad, air ais chun àrd-ùrlar gus puirt-a-beul, ceòl clàrsaich agus ceòl na fidhle a thoirt dha na bha an làthair. Thuirt am Prìomh Thidsear, Anna NicDiarmaid, “Bha e dìreach sgoinneil a bhith a’ faicinn feadhainn a chleachd a bhith san sgoil a’ tilleadh chun àrd-ùrlair len cuid tàlantan, agus cuideachd a’ nochdadh san luchd-èisteachd airson taic a chur ris a’ chuirm. Rinn na sgoilearan againn obair mhòr agus tha e na adhbhar misneachd a bhith a’ faicinn cho misneachail, tàlantach agus dealasach sa tha a’ chlann air fad, bhon sgoil-àraich suas gu p7. Tha sinn a’ faighinn an t-uabhas taice bho phàrantan agus bhon chòrr den sgoil agus tha sin a’ toirt misneachd dhuinn cuideachd. Tha an t-àm-ri-teachd a’ coimhead math airson Aonad Ghàidhlig Innis an Uillt agus tha sinn a’ coimhead air adhart ri tuilleadh adhartais, fàs is neartachaidh”.

2013 marks the 25th anniversary of the Gaelic Unit at Bun Sgoil Innis an Uillt – Meadowburn Primary School in Bishopbriggs. The unit began in 1988 with 9 pupils and has grown to reach a current roll of 44, with 22 in the nursery coming up. Most of our families have no background in Gaelic. The unit has been a great success story in raising the profile of bilingual education in East Dunbartonshire, and continues to go from strength to strength - at present the connected Gaelic nursery is at full capacity, so the school roll looks set to continue to grow.

Celebrations to mark the anniversary culminated in a concert in the school on 20 September, which showcased the enormous talent of pupils past and present. Sgoil Araich and Bun Sgoil pupils provided an evening of great entertainment singing, dancing and performing a play. The Munro Family, former pupils of the school, returned to centre stage with a set of puirt à beul, clarsach and traditional fiddle music. Principal teacher Anne MacDermaid said, “It was fantastic to see all our talented former pupils returning to the stage and appearing in the audience on the night to support our concert. Our pupils worked very hard and it is always promising to see the confidence, talent and enthusiasm of all the children from nursery up to primary 7. We receive a great deal of support from our parents and the rest of the school which is also very encouraging. The future looks bright for Meadowburn Gaelic Unit and we look forward to seeing it continue to grow and go from strength to strength”.

Donna Young will be visiting Toddlers again this coming Thursday. Donna is our local Parent Adviser for Gaelic Education (Comann nam Parant) - see link below. She also founded the current Toddler Group as there was no Gaelic Toddler provision prior to this. She saw the need for an introduction of the Gaelic Language from an early age and along with the help of other parents set up the Group in 2012.

For those of us who have to make the decision about which school to send our children to next year, January is the deadline for submitting placing requests. Donna is there to advise any of you who may be considering Gaelic Medium Education for your child and will be at Toddlers more frequently in the run up to Christmas. She is also happy to do home visits (I have just had one and she answered many of my questions - and I had a lot!) to discuss

any queries you may have about Gaelic Medium Educaction. Donna is happy to be contacted by email or please chat to her at Toddlers.

Thèid an t-airgead a chosg thar dà bhliadhna agus thèid goireasan a leasachadh ann an sgoiltean agus thig piseach air suidheachadh IT, ach am faighear foghlam tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig a thoirt air adhart aig gach ìre. A bharrachd air sin, bidh a’ Chomhairle an coluadar le coimhearsnachdan mu bhith a’ comharrachadh cuid de sgoiltean far a bheil a’ mhòr chuid dhen chloinn fileanta an Gàidhlig mar sgoiltean Gàidhlig.

Thuirt am MInistear airson cànain Alba, Alasdair Allan:

“Tha an t-iarrtas airson foghlam tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig anns na h-Eileanan Siar a’ sìor fhàs, dìreach mar a tha a’ tachairt air feadh Alba. Tha planaichean adhartach ann airson an £500,000 seo a chosg airson goireasan a thoirt air adhart agus barrachd taic a thoirt dhan luchd-teagaisg agus dhan chloinn thar an dà bhliadhna a tha romhainn.

“Tha na h-àireamhan a chaidh fhoillseachadh anns a’ chunntas-sluaigh bho chionn ghoirid a’ mìneachadh mar a tha ar taic do dh’fhoghlam Gàidhlig a’ soirbheachadh agus na mhisneachd do ghinealach ùr de luchd-cleachdaidh.

“Tha e misneachail cuideachd gu bheil an taic seo ga chur gu feum ann an leasachaidhean òigridh agus an-lùib phròiseactan-cosnaidh. Tha e a’ cheart cho cudromach gun urrainn dhuinn dearbhadh gu bheil àite aig a’ Ghàidhlig ann an saoghal an latha an-diugh agus gu bheil sinn a’ cruthachadh chothroman do dhaoine a bhith a’ cleachdadh na Gàidhlig nan coimhearsnachdan fhèin sa tha e comthroman a chruthachadh a bhith a’ frithealadh chlasaichean.

“Tha mi cuideachd toilichte gu bheil Comhairle nan Eilean Siar gu bhith an coluadar mu chuid de sgoiltean a chomharrachadh mar sgoiltean Gàidhlig.”

Thuirt Catriona Stiùbhart, Cathraiche Foghlaim agus Seirbheisean Chloinne na Comhairle, “Tha sinn air leth toilichte

leis an taic-airgid seo, agus bidh e gu cinnteach cuideachail ann a bhith a’ cumail air adhart leis an deagh obair a tha air a bhith a’ dol air feadh nan Eilean Siar thar nam bliadhnaichean a chaidh seachad a-thaobh foghlam tro mheadhan na Gàidhlig.”

Schools receive funding for Gaelic education

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar will strengthen and extend Gaelic medium education thanks to £500,000 funding from the Scottish Government.

The investment over two years will be used to improve facilities in schools, provide IT infrastructure and enable Gaelic medium education to grow at all levels. In addition, the Comhairle will consult with communities about designating certain schools as GME schools where Gaelic-speaking pupils are in the majority.

Minister for Scotland’s Languages Alasdair Allan said: “The demand for Gaelic medium education in the Western Isles continues to grow, as it does across Scotland. There are ambitious plans to use this £500,000 to improve the facilities and resources available to teachers and pupils over the next two years.

“The recent census figures published showed that our commitment to Gaelic education is paying off and inspiring a new generation of speakers.

“It is encouraging that this investment will be used for youth development and vocational projects. Demonstrating that Gaelic has a place in everyday life and creating the opportunities for speakers to use their skills as they go about their communities is just as important as giving people access to classes.

“I also welcome Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s proposal to consult on designating a number of schools as Gaelic schools.”

Catriona Stewart, chair of education, said: “We are delighted to have received this financial support and it will certainly help to continue and develop the great work which has been on-going throughout the Western Isles over the past few years to develop Gaelic Medium Education.”

New qualifications are being introduced in Scotland from August 2013. The new Nationals, Highers and Advanced Highers will replace Access, Standard Grade, Intermediate, and the existing Higher and Advanced Higher qualifications.

These new qualifications are designed to give your child the skills they will need to succeed in the 21st century.

New Qualifications — New Opportunities for your Child

A guide for Parents/Carers to the new National Qualifications

Broad General education Children and young people work their way through Experiences and Outcomes in each of the five Curriculum Levels (Early, First, Second, Third, Fourth) and in each of the eight Curricular Areas. The five Curricular Levels span pre-school to the end of S3. This is the Broad General Education. Learners progress at their own pace, working through the Experiences and Outcomes of the most appropriate level for them. Learners will be supported in collecting evidence of their achievements, with a profile of these being produced in P7 and S3.

Experiences and Outcomes are what the learner will be able to explain or do. There are detailed Experiences and Outcomes for all subjects available on the Education Scotland website; teachers work to deliver these and the progress of learners is measured in the achievement of Outcomes. Reporting to parents is likely to include information about children’s Experiences and Outcomes and about the Levels at which they are working.

Senior PhaSeLearners work towards qualifications in the Senior Phase. Available qualifications and awards include National 1, National 2, National 3, National 4, National 5, Higher, Advanced Higher, Skills for Work, Progression Awards. Learners may also gain awards such as the John Muir Award, the Duke of Edinburgh Award and Youth Achievement Awards. When young people leave school aged 16+, they are entitled to a positive and sustained destination. This may be college, university, work, apprenticeships or training.

Valuable learning also takes place outside school/college.

literacy, numeracy and health & WellBeinG These are embedded in and across every year and every level; they are the responsibility of all school and college staff.

PerSonaliSation and choice All learners are entitled to personalisation and choice within their learning. Schools are all different and offer these opportunities for personalisation and choice in different ways. Learners make subject choices for qualifications in the Senior Phase. The number of subject choices available is a matter for discussion between learners, parents, schools and partners.
