  • ALZHEIMER’S FOUNDATION OF AMERICA

    2016 ANNUAL REPORT

  • Dear Friends:

Making a difference is at the heart of everything we do at the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA). Indeed, it’s the very reason we were founded in 2002; to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s and in the lives of the families who are living with it.

The entire AFA team embraces that mission completely and works relentlessly to fulfill it. And in 2016, it produced some tremendous results, including:

    • Expanding the hours of AFA’s national toll-free helpline to make it even easier for families and caregivers to get support and help in their time of need.

    • Providing free memory screenings to over 500,000 people.

    • Training over 1,700 people so that they can enhance the level of care they provide to individuals with dementia.

    • Awarding nearly $1 million to research, innovative programs and services to help people living with Alzheimer’s, and scholarships to help the next generation of leaders in the fight against Alzheimer’s.

    • Successfully fighting to increase federal funding for Alzheimer’s research and pass laws which protect programs that provide caregiver training, adult day services, legal assistance and Alzheimer’s education.

    • Holding educational conferences across the country to help bring education and information directly into communities.

    • Turning the world teal through our “Light the World” campaign, which saw landmarks in 47 states and 10 different countries light up teal to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s disease.

    • Adding 200 new member organizations, bringing our total to over 2,600 member organizations throughout the country.

    • Once again earning Charity Navigator’s highest rating, four stars, for our commitment to accountability, transparency and financial responsibility.

We couldn’t have done all this without your support, together with the tireless efforts of our Board of Directors, staff, volunteers and member organizations. But with 5 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s, there is much more work left to do. That’s why we need your help.

With your continued generosity, we will further build on these successes and help even more families affected by this terrible disease.

Thank you again for your help and support! You are making a tremendous difference in the lives of many.

    Sincerely,

    Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr.

  • 2016 AFA BOARD OF DIRECTORS

BERT E. BRODSKY, FOUNDER & CHAIRMANBert E. Brodsky is AFA’s founder and board chairman, as well as chairman of Sandata Technologies, a leading provider of workforce and operational management solutions and services that help optimize the delivery of home care services.

Mr. Brodsky’s experiences as a caregiver for his mother, who had Alzheimer’s disease, are what led him to found AFA in 2002; to ensure that families affected by Alzheimer’s always had a place to turn to get help, support and answers.

BARRY E. BERG, TREASURERBarry Berg, C.P.A., is treasurer of AFA’s Board of Trustees and managing partner, Nussbaum Yates Berg Klein & Wolpow, L.L.C. He has established himself as one of the New York tristate area’s leading advisors to entrepreneurs and their businesses.

Mr. Berg was drawn to serve on AFA’s board by his family’s experiences with Alzheimer’s; his mother, Phyllis, had the disease, and his father, Milton, was her loving caregiver. In their honor, AFA awards Phyllis and Milton Family Respite Care Grants biannually to member organizations to support caregivers.

LUISA ECHEVARRIALuisa Echevarria is the former director, community empowerment, local media for Univision, where she worked for over 25 years. She was responsible for public service announcement campaigns for both Univision and Unimas and has won two local Emmy awards for her campaigns.

Echevarria, whose mother and grandmother both battled the disease, joined AFA’s Board of Directors in 2011 to help further AFA’s efforts to raise awareness about the disease, provide information and connect people to services to improve their quality of life.

GERALD (JERRY) ANGOWITZ, ESQ.Gerald Angowitz brings to AFA many years of experience counseling companies on executive matters, general business management and human resources. Currently, he serves as managing director at Lloyd Staffing.

Angowitz has served on AFA’s board for a number of years. He was drawn to the post, in part, because of his personal experience with Alzheimer’s disease.

EDWARD D. MILLEREdward D. Miller has decades of distinguished professional experience in banking and financial services. He is chairman of the board of American Express Centurion Bank, and the former president and chief executive officer of AXA Financial, Inc.

Along with his professional experience, Mr. Miller has served in leadership roles in a number of different organizations; he is a director of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, chairman of the Partnership for New York City’s Security and Risk Management Task Force and a trustee for the New York City Police Foundation, and Phoenix House. He is also a United States Marine Corps veteran.

JUDI MARCUSJudi Marcus is the Studio Manager for Fred Marcus Photography and has a long history of giving back to others, serving on North Shore University Hospital’s AIDS Awareness Committee, Long Island Jewish Hospital’s Partners in Women’s Health board, the Roslyn Chapter of the Children’s Medical Fund of Schneider’s Children’s Hospital (Past-President), and the Sid Jacobson JCC (founding member). Ms. Marcus formerly worked as a social worker and was the primary caregiver for her mother and mother-in-law, both of whom had dementia.

ARTHUR LAITMAN, ESQ. Arthur Laitman was drawn to serve as an associate AFA board member to help AFA further its mission of improving care and resources to families affected by Alzheimer’s, as well as raising public awareness about the disease. A highly respected and experienced attorney, Mr. Laitman is a partner with the law firm of Rosenberg, Fortuna & Laitman, LLP and a member of the North Shore LIJ Health System Commerce and Industry Council, the American Bar Association, the Nassau County Bar Association and the Board of Directors of the Hofstra University School of Law Alumni Association.

AFA’s board of directors is comprised of hardworking, experienced professionals who were each drawn to serve because of their desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

  • AFA HELPLINECARING FOR CAREGIVERS A RESOURCE WHICH MAKES A DIFFERENCEAFA’s helpline provided assistance to over 5,000

people through phone calls, emails, webchats and

    Skype in 2016.

Expanded helpline hours: Helpline hours were

extended in 2016 to include Saturday hours, giving

caregivers additional opportunities to get help when

    needed.

GROWING REACHIn addition to expanding hours, AFA brought on

additional licensed social workers to share evening

and weekend hours. As a result, AFA’s social workers

provided over 3,400 hours of support to people in

need during 2016, a 56% increase from the prior year.

AFA’s national, toll free helpline, staffed entirely by trained, licensed social workers, provides support, assistance and education to families living with Alzheimer’s disease, particularly to family caregivers. It also helps connect people to services in their area, no matter what state they live in.

  • RESEARCH, GRANT & SCHOLARSHIP FUNDING

RESEARCHIn 2016, AFA committed grants to two promising research studies aimed at finding better treatment and a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

    • One study is being conducted at the Litwin-Zucker Research Center for the Study of Alzheimer’s Disease at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research in New York and is exploring the causes of hallucination and aggressive behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s and how they can be better treated.

    • Another extensive research project through the Hadassah Medical Organization in Israel is examining ways to improve the early detection of Alzheimer’s

disease so that it can be treated more effectively.

GRANTSAFA awarded grant funding to its member organizations in 2016 to support innovative programs that help address the needs of families affected by Alzheimer’s, as well as respite care services for caregivers.

SCHOLARSHIPSAFA awarded college scholarships to high school students through its annual scholarship essay contest. Winners were chosen from a record pool of 2,500 entries, each of which discussed how Alzheimer’s affected the student’s life.

2016. Over 500,000 people received free, confidential

memory screenings through the program in 2016,

which was done in partnership with AFA’s member

    organizations. Additionally, K-Mart Pharmacy, working

with AFA, held free memory screenings at their 528

locations throughout the country during Alzheimer’s

    Awareness Month in November.

Over 3 million Americans have been screened through AFA’s National Memory Screening Program.

    education requirements.

SUPPORT GROUPSAFA’s licensed social workers hold regular

telephone-based support groups to help people

living with Alzheimer’s disease, their loved ones and

professional caregivers. Each support group enables

participants to ask questions, get answers, share

experiences and connect with others who are dealing

with the same challenges in a small, intimate forum.

CARE CONNECTIONAFA’s free, monthly educational webinars for family

have access to the services they need. AFA social

workers regularly connect helpline callers to local

member organizations in their area for support

    services.

Additionally, AFA awards grant funding to its

    member organizations to support educational

    initiatives, therapeutic programs, respite care

    services and public safety.

caregivers who have gone through the experience of caring for

    someone with Alzheimer’s.

Topics included updates on research and public policy, clinical
