University of Houston-Clear Lake Office of Institutional Effectiveness Alumni Career Survey Fall 2016 Summary

In fall 2015, the offices of Institutional Effectiveness, Alumni Relations, and Career Services formed a committee to revise the old Alumni Survey into a more useful tool to meet the data needs. The new Alumni Career Survey was built to capture the alumni experience at the University of Houston-Clear Lake (UHCL) nine months after graduation and to determine the way their higher education helped establish their professional careers. The online Alumni Career Survey was conducted in the fall semester of 2016 using Qualtrics survey software and iModules; it was launched in October 16 and ended on December 16, 2016. All alumni with current email addresses in iModules who graduated nine months ago were invited to participate in the survey. The alumni data can be divided by school, by degree level, by gender, by ethnicity, by program or any of the above combinations. The average completion time for the survey was 10 minutes.

The next five pages contain a short summary of data points by UHCL and by individual schools collected Fall 2016 in the Alumni Career Survey. Complete survey results are posted online at http://prtl.uhcl.edu/institutional-effectiveness/institutional-research/university-survey.

If UHCL offer the Industrial Engineering program, I would attend to complete that curriculum.

Issues with admin. I still haven't received my diploma.

I still choose UHCL because I did have good experience and generous amount of scholarship. There was not muchcompetition among students so it is easy for me to be nominated for either school or private scholarships. Theschool environment is laid back so I could do multiple activities at the same time, attend classes, work part time, joinseveral student groups. Everything is so close to each other so it did not take much time to commute or park.

The courses are age old and there is no scope to learn new technology

When I was working on my MBA I did not understand that where you get your MBA from can be a big factor indetermining the kind of job you can get. I keep reading articles that state that MBA graduates typically start at jobswhere they earn $70,000. It may be that I just don't know how to look for those jobs but the articles I read stated thatwhere you obtain your MBA from is really important.

Really a good program.

I have been accepted for the Masters program

Deciding factors are unchanged. 1. UHCL offered tuition that was within my company's tuition reimbursement policyrestrictions and fell under IRS benefit thresholds for tax reporting purposes. 2. UHCL offered a face-to-face learningenvironment in a location close to my home and my work. 3. The MBA program met my minimum requirement ofbeing AACSB accredited.

UHCL was affordable and very close to my home. The faculty exceeded my expectations. I really appreciatedattending school and working in a professional job at the same time.

I am not certain that I would have gone for a second master's degree had I known that my job searches would yieldthe same results as when I did not have a second master's degree.

I would like to explore an engineering degree

I have a feeling accounting is still one of the best program at UHCL. It does have some reputation. Administrators atleast pay attention to it and try to promote it.

It is what I wanted.

I wish I were not so old (55) and had more money. I would love to go to school full time but have too muchresponsibility. I really wanted a degree in Finance but it was taking too long and just needed a degree.

The MBA degree was the best choice for furthering my career.

I've wanted an MBA since I was in junior high. UHCL was a great value.

UHCL feels like a good starter university for your bachelor's degree but I am not sure that the master's degreesoffered here are as strong as those offered by big name schools.

Both my mother and myself have achieved bachelors and master's degrees from UHCL. Now my son is attendingUHCL to complete his bachelors degree.

Unless they want some schools with laid back environment and less competition. UHCL is not a big school so bigemployers do not come here. I recalled EY did come once or twice but that was it. Deloitte, KPMG, and PwC did notcome from what I remember. So unless you are really good students and confident in your ability to find a GOOD jobafter graduation, do not come here. I have many fellows who could not find a job in their fields and they were decentstudents (good grades, always active on campus, good networking). I am going to UH now for my Master; because Ifeel like UHCL grad students do not receive as much attention as they deserve, especially after the downwardexpansion ( freshman and sophomore get the spotlight). UH offers great networking night with many big employers(I am talking about Exxon Mobile or Big 4 "BIG") very often. UH has a great graduate program with certificates andfocused tracks and I do feel welcome as a grad students. The professors really emphasize on preparing us for thefuture career rather than just focusing on hard, cold, technical knowledge from books. I do pay a few thousandsmore for tuition and fees at UH but it is worth it.

Suggested to my son.

Love your new 16 month masters programs that are online, wish you had started them years ago.

Same reasons as noted above.

As an employee here at the university I would not like to discredit any programs but I as an alumni, I am finding ithard to find a job that was worth the obtainment of a master's degree here. It may be that I am not looking hardenough or that I do not know how to look for the right job. As it stands, the amount of time and money spent on twomaster's degrees seems wasted as the positions that I am currently finding only care about a bachelor's degree andjob experience.

I wish UHCL would open up Engineering programs instead of just the prep courses.

I can see, since I am now a High School Teacher why some of the classes are structured the way that they are. Iwish you could offer classes that cater to students that have fluid speaking and writing skills and life experience.

None

I think sharing anonymous grade information would benefit students. This used to be available and helped me planmy schedule each semester. Texas A&M also used to post anonymous salary and employment information. I'mcurious what the distribution of the UHCL MBA salaries.
