After pulling up stakes following our bull sale last year, re-locating to our new home here in Westerose, Alberta, record rain-fall this past summer, record-snowfall this winter it’s been a year we won’t soon forget. The renewed optimism in Canada’s cattle industry is a welcome change and presents new opportunities for those of us that have managed to weather the storm. We are excited about this year’s offering; it is a unique oppor-tunity to acquire genetics from some of the most dominant breeding sires we have ever used Alta Cedar Lad 13N, Saskvalley Stampede 128S, Alta Cedar Samurai 46T & Alta Cedar Prairie Storm 47R. We have a few low birth weight sons of Alta Cedar Diablo 98U that have surpassed our expectations; we are eager to see the impact he has on the legendary Studer Shorthorns herd – his new home. I would like to take this time to invite you to the 2011 Showcase Bull Sale held in the new location at Westerose, AB. The Boake family and their friends have once again surpassed the offerings of the past to share with you some of the most maternally strong genetics found anywhere in the North American continent.

In a day when the word “outcross” is being spoken continually by producers big and small, we are seeing folks scramble to offer new genetics to try to fill the void for a share at the marketplace while keeping phenotypically attractive & durable cattle. While several are looking to introduce genetics from other breeds to attempt the “breeding up” option, some of the most astute are pursuing avenues that will restore Shorthorns as the maternally superior breed they have always been. From my vantage point, I am not only seeing people request outcross genetics, but more importantly, are look-ing for the restoration of “breed character”— a novel idea in my mind.

Peter, Christine, and their friends are at a definite advantage when it comes to producing cattle which carry the traits that define what Shorthorns are all about, and will always be about. The days of single trait selection are long gone. A balance of quality, profitable traits are the only option as we see the push for Shorthorn genetics back into mainstream beef production. As the Boake’s and others continue to submit more and more data to the sys-tem, we are seeing that these cattle can really perform when compared to much of today’s conventional bloodlines; and why wouldn’t they, these cattle have been designed with generations of real world production. After analyzing the nearly perfect set of feet he stands on, the mass and volume he possess, it is very evident that this is a bull that is doing a lot of things right. From the showring to straight beef production, this Shorthorn bull is proving it is possible to do both. He sired the 2008 Canadian National Cham-pion Female, which in turn weaned off her first calf, at nearly her own body weight, that went on to be the $40,000 top seller in the Showcase 2009 sale. In addition, the $20,000 high selling heifer from the 2010 sale is also out of another young 13N daughter. The 13N females continu-ally wean off calves that exceed 60% of their own body weight. From his perfectly docile tem-perament, to his perfectly composed females and their legitimate and stunning production, we strongly feel that 13N will leave quite a mark on the herd’s that chooses to acquire his genetics.

This heifer’s mamma produces such market-able cattle, regardless of which bull you throw out with her. A son sold to Rockdell Shorthorns in 2003, this Chinook son (pictured) sold to the Felker’s in 2009 and we have retained 3 daugh-ters in the herd. Dee 27X is pretty green but we have no doubt that she will pay her way just as her dam has!

The Dottie’s are writing their own page in the history books of the Shorthorn breed. The most famous perhaps would have to be Diamond Helena Dottie 12H owned by Duis Farms. A while back I asked Dan Stephenson where the Dottie’s originated from, he informed me that he has been able to trace the Dottie cow family all the way back to 1822 when George Coates published the first herd book which contained 710 bulls and 850 cows. It exhilarates me to include that fact here in her footnotes. The dam of Lot 39 is also the grand dam of the amazing Lot 31 heifer consigned by Wendy and company.
