Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter History
In 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority became America’s first Greekletter organization established by and for AfricanAmerican women. Her roots date back to Howard University in Washington D.C. where Ethel Hedgemen Lyle of St. Louis, Missouri conceived the idea for the organization. She viewed the Sorority as an instrument for enriching the social and intellectual aspects of college life by providing mental stimulation through interaction with friends and associates.
Alpha Kappa Alpha cultivates and encourages high scholastic and ethical standards; promotes unity and friendship among college women; alleviates problems concerning girls and women; maintains a progressive interest in college life; and serves all mankind through a nucleus of more than 260,000 women in 900 chapters.
In 2008, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. celebrated its Centennial with a myriad of events and activities during the national conference in Washington, D.C.
Alpha Zeta Omega was the first Greekletter sorority in the city of Durham as well as the third chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha to be established in the State of North Carolina. The chapter was chartered on April 14, 1928 by eight members who wanted to establish a chapter in Durham, N.C. Those members were: Majorie Shepard, Frances Eggleston, Bernice W. Jones, Jean Holtzclaw, Byrd Jackson, Beatrice Qualls Burnette, Alda Fortune and Gladys Powell.
Alpha Zeta Omega has over eighty years of history that is full of rich tradition and a testimony to its national goal of “Service to All Mankind”. The chapter embraces Alpha Kappa Alpha’s national mission: Global Leadership through Timeless Service as outlined by our International President, Carolyn House Stewart. Signature program initiatives for the mission include: Emerging Young Leaders, Asthma Prevention and Management, Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability, Global Poverty, Economic Security, Social Justice and Human Rights, and Internal Leadership Training for External Service.
In 1995, the members of Alpha Zeta Omega established the Ivy Community Center, Inc. as a nonprofit tax exempt corporation. The purpose of the corporation is to promote the well being and betterment of people in our community. Additionally, the corporation sought to acquire a facility for the members of the Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter to meet, plan and conduct community outreach services.
The Chapter continues its recognition of academic excellence by awarding scholarships to outstanding college bound students. Supporting the charitable efforts; such as, the National Council of Negro Women, John Avery Boys & Girls Club, and United Negro College Fund continues to be a focus of the chapter.
The tradition of “Service to All Mankind” continues as Alpha Zeta Omega implements programs that serve the community by providing educational opportunities, supporting the arts and highlighting health issues.

unity.
It is indeed a pleasure to represent the members of the Alpha Zeta OmeChapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated and the Ivy Community Center, Incorporated in welcoming you to the 23rd Annual Debutante Cotillion Ball. Eighteen wonderful young ladies have worked hard during the past months in preparing for this evening . . . an evening which I believe will be very special for them and for you. The Debutante Cotillion Program consists of more than just preparing for the Cotillion Ball. These young ladies attend workshops and cultural events, participate in service projects and engage in several "bonding" activities. These experiences assist our debutantes to successfully make the transition into young adulthood. The Program also consists of fundraising activities which ultimately will help ease the financial burden of their college education through the awarding of scholarships. A special “thank you” is extended to everyone who has unselfishly supported our debutantes in all aspects of our Cotillion Program.
To the hardworking, dedicated, and committed Cotillion Committee: words alone cannot express our sincere thanks for your diligent and unwavering dedication to this important chapter program. You should celebrate this evening as well!
Debutantes, may you realize that with hard work and perseverance, many of your dreams will be realized. Be sure to keep in touch with us and share all the “good news” you will experience in the years to come!
Sincerely,

Each of these young ladies is very talented in her own unique way, and each has the potential for greatness. The creativity, vibrancy, intelligence, and positive attitude demonstrated by our debutantes have been very u During the past several months, the debutantes have participated in a variety of educational, cultural, community service and social activities designed to enhance their personal growth and development and to empower them to be successful during their transition from high school to post-secondary education. We hope that this experience has been memorable, rewarding, enriching and enjoyable and that the debutantes have formed lasting bonds of friendship with each other.
plifting.
Debutantes, on this evening as you make your debut, we salute and challenge you to embrace your future with open arms. We wish you self-confidence, inner peace, compassion, sound judgment, clear vision, wisdom, spiritual uplift, patience and good health. Dear Princess “Moon-A-Looking”,
Your nickname includes the word “Princess”, that is an indication of royalty. It is an indication of good stock. It describes you as being trustworthy, helpful, courteous, kind, and many other good traits. It is very important that you believe in yourself and see to reflect pride. Seek to learn knowledge is a good thing. Apply your knowledge in a manner that is good and helpful. Seek to gain wisdom and with that wisdom apply understanding.
All of the members of your “Family” will always take pride in your accomplishments. Remember, that you are loved.
It is my sincere wish and most reverent prayer, that GOD will continue to Bless, Protect, and Guide each of us. Love, Uncle Donald
A Young Woman
There comes a time in a young girl’s life, When she begins to start growing up,
It’s a time when you need to let her go, And trust that she’ll take the right path.
Now is when she needs you most. And she needs your love.
The closer you try to pull her in, The further away she’ll go.
She’s growing up… So let her go.
-Leticia the Poet
Dearest Danielle, We are letting you go, knowing that you
are in God’s care and will take the right paths to become the woman that you are meant to be. Get your education. You know I always push education! All my love, Nana

When God was making Brooke He thought “what can I do” To create a perfect little girl
To make a granny’s dream come true
He started with cute and healthy Then added extra smarts
Then threw in lots of giggles To lighten up our hearts
He made her eyes dance and twinkle And her personality, the best in town
Blessed her family with sunshine Ever since she has been around
He made her brave and strong
Part warrior, part princess Full of energy and mischievousness
Cutest little thing, in a dress
It’s been sixteen years since God sent you And I’m thankful everyday
He heard prayers from your Papa and Granny,
And sent the perfect little girl our way

From long pigtails to your first date with a beau we’ve hated the changes more than you know…..
From the innocent questions to the incredible knowledge we’ve seen you blossom and get ready for college….
From the shopping trips to the recipes between us two … From the smiles you flash and kisses you blew…. We will save those memories, as long as we live …
For we cherish the love you so freely give…. As you become independent and leave the nest….

Keep Striving for Success
Debutante Imari
McLeanDon't Quit, by: Unknown Author
When things go wrong as they sometimes will, When the road you're trudging seems all uphill, When funds are low and the debts are high, And you want to smile, but you have to sigh. When care is pressing you down a bit. Rest, if you must, but don't you quit. Life is queer with its twists and turnsAs every one of us sometimes learns. And many a failure turns aboutWhen he might have won had he stuck it out: Don't give up though the pace seems slow ‐You may succeed with another blow. Success is failure turned inside out ‐The silver tint of the clouds of doubt. And you never can tell how close you are. It may be near when it seems so far: So stick to the fight when you're hardest hitIt's when things seem worst that you must not quit.
Love, Kenneth and Monica Barnes
