Dear Zeta Chi Omega Sorors,

Zeta Chi Omega was very busy during the month of

February providing countless hours of service to the

Arlington and Alexandria communities. The Chapter

participated in the Alfred Street Baptist Church annual

HBCU Fair by registering voters and disseminating

Chapter scholarship information. Other activities in-

cluded participation in the Nauck Feel the Heritage

Festival and a voter registration drive. A special tour of

the Northern Virginia Urban League’s Slave Museum

was provided to the EYL girls. The Project Step Out

girls were provided a workshop on Heifer International,

and the Prospective Debutantes rehearsed for the Co-

tillion. Congratulations to all of you for your participation

in the community service activities.

The Chapter participated in the 2012 Metropolitan

Founders’ Day celebration with over 125 members pre-

sent at this memorable event. I am eternally grateful to

Zeta Chi Omega sorors for your support of this event

and your participation on the various sub-committees.

The event would not have been successful without all

of you! A very special “thank you” to Sorors Yvette

Darnaby and Irma Bogan for serving as sub-committee

chairmen and Soror VaShawn Veal for serving as the

committee’s secretary.

Congratulations to Soror Crystal Lander for serving as

the Chairman for the Legislative Town Hall during the

Legislative Weekend held in Richmond, Virginia. Re-

member, if you attended the Legislative Weekend in

Richmond, Virginia, please forward your name to So-

ror Elle Hudgins (eloisehudgins@hotmail.com) for the

official Chapter files.

The 65th Boulé will be held from July 21 - 27, 2012 in

San Francisco, California. Registration and housing

information are now available online. The paper regis-

tration materials can be found in the next issue of the

Ivy Leaf.

Don’t forget to register for the 59th Mid-Atlantic Re-

gional Conference (MARC) to be held in Norfolk, Vir-

ginia. All sorors are encouraged to register and attend

the MARC. Late registration will end on March 10,

2012. Once you have registered for the conference,

forward your name to Soror Elle Hudgins

(eloisehudgins@hotmail.com) for the Chapter files.

I Rise Early (Part II)

Last month’s Spirit and Inspiration article dealt with the

need for each of us to find devotional time in our day

where we allow our mind to be refreshed, our spirit to be

renewed, and our body to be restored. I shared in the

February article how 2011 was a challenging time with an

unusual lack of the peace that I normally have. The miss-

ing link was consistency in my devotional time.

With this knowledge, I have made my

early morning time with God, once

again, a priority -- protecting it from

the private time robbers of sleepi-

ness, text messages, tweets, phone

calls, and overall busyness. Even

though it’s only March, I have already

seen major differences that are notewor-

thy; changes that are worth sharing.

One of the first things I did as I re-established my private

time was to get out my iPad and write to my heart’s con-

tent. I wrote down all the things that bothered or puzzled

me from last year. I told God about my waning patience

for the things that He had promised me years back. I

wrote about what it means physically and emotionally to

be 25 in a 52 year-old frame (The spirit is willing, but the

flesh is slowwww!) In other words---I let it all out. I was

reverently honest with God about everything, and from

that point on, it was clear to me that missing these pre-

cious moments had caused me to allow things to build up;

and we all know that holding things in is the foundation on

which the house of bitterness is built. In my private time,

I’ve learned to let things go.

My private time also includes reading passages from my

Bible and/or listening to various sermons via podcast. How

sweet this is as God encourages me through His Word. My

waning patience had come from not reminding my spirit

daily of the sovereignty and power of God. This portion of

my devotional time is now restoring my faith and allowing

me to see God for who He really is: One whose promises

will be kept regardless of our age, gender, or physical con-

dition. My increasing faith is showing me that God is able

to take care of every situation; therefore, I don’t have to.

I often listen to music during this time or simply sit quietly.

There are times when God will turn my attention to the

birds in the tree just outside my window, and

remind me through these winged creatures

that I am a kept woman, a pearl of great

price. He shows me that just as

every need in nature will be met, so

will my needs as well. I have

watched how the birds are neither

fretful nor anxious, and how they

waste no time mimicking the songs of

other birds--they only sing the song that

they’ve been given. In my private time, God, through

nature, has reminded me that as His creation, I can be

uniquely who I am, and sing, without hesitation or apology,

the song that He has given me.

There is so much more that I could share, but I do sincerely

hope that this up close and personal snippet into my devo-

tional time will whet your appetite to begin with at least 10

minutes, five days a week, of your own time with God. It is

not a gimmick or a ploy, but it is, undeniably, that link to a

greater sense of peace and purpose. I challenge you to

rise early and--Begin with Ten!

14 ounces low-fat turkey kielbasa 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast nonstick cooking spray 1 medium celery stalk, chopped 2 small onions, chopped 4 cloves garlic, chopped 1 small bunch green onions, chopped 1 medium green bell pepper, chopped 1 14½-ounce can of diced tomatoes, no salt added 1½ cups uncooked brown rice 4 cups water 2 cubes, low-sodium chicken bouillon 1 bay leaf 1½ teaspoons cayenne pepper 3 tablespoons parsley, finely chopped 1. Wash chicken and pat dry. Cut the chicken breast and kielbasa into 1-inch chunks. 2. Spray a medium-sized pan with nonstick cooking spray. Brown the sausage and chicken over medium heat and remove from the pan. 3. Add next 6 ingredients to the same pot and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes. 4. Put the cooked meat back in the pot; add the rice, wa-ter, chicken bouillon cubes, bay leaf, and cayenne pepper. Bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat, and let simmer for about 50 minutes* or until the water is evaporated. 5. Mid-Atlantic Region Service Project In support of Alpha Kappa Alpha's Program Initiative V: Social Justice and Human Rights, our Regional Service Project will aid domestic violence shelters within the Tide-water area of Virginia. Tough economic times have nega-tively impacted these shelters; therefore, we will provide relief by donating toiletries; undergarments; and gift cards from pharmacies, drug stores, and national department stores. Toiletry items may include: soap, lotion, deodorant, tooth-paste, toothbrushes, dental floss, mouth wash, powder, vitamins, hair products, nail polish and nail polish remover, nail clippers and nail files, razors, hair remover, contact lens solution, facial cleansers, make‐up remover, cotton

balls, Q‐Tips, sanitary napkins, tampons, aspirins, etc. Gift cards should be purchased from nationally recognized stores and be valued at $5, $10, $15, or $20. Soror Julia Cleckley was the keynote speaker at the Mary-

land Census Bureau's Black History Month program.

Soror Joyce Henderson, our National Standards Chair-man, was the keynote speaker at the Department of Hous-ing and Urban Development's Back History Month pro-gram. The theme was "Black Women in American Culture

and History." Soror Joyce is a retired Army Colonel.

Soror Patricia Harris Thomas welcomed her newest grand-daughter, Ava Maria Nicole Thomas.

Amended Zeta Chi Omega Bylaws Great news! Madam Regional Director, Linda Gilliam, has approved our amended Chapter Bylaws. Our new Chapter Bylaws went into effect as soon as they were approved. Copies of the new document will be distributed at the March General Body Meeting. They will also be placed on our Chapter website in the Members Only section.

Tip of the Month: When can the chairman vote?

There are a few times when the presiding officer of an or-ganization can vote. The chairman may vote when:

1. the vote is made in secret (a ballot vote allows the chair to vote at the same as all the members of the group, or

2. the chair’s vote will change the outcome of the vote (a tie for example).

When an issue is debated during a meeting, the chair does not participate unless he or she gives up the chair until the issue is resolved.

According to RONR In Brief, page 69 ―The presiding officer of an assembly of more than about a dozen members should make every effort to maintain an appearance of impartiality so that members on both sides of any issue can feel confident that they will receive fair treatment.‖ Note: The Parliamentarian can only vote when there is a ballot vote. For more information on this topic, see [RONR (10th ed.), p. 50-51].

Introducing Sister Circles

Due to the large size of our Chapter, we will organize the Chapter into groups called Sister Circles (SC). The purpose of

the SCs is to allow sorors to get to know one another in a small group setting. Each SC will have a Sister Circle Leader

(SCL) and contain no more than 20 sorors. The goal is to get sorors to know one another as well as to have them be-

come more engaged in the activities and programs of the Chapter. Stay tuned for more information.

MIP Sponsorship Forms

Sorors must meet sponsorship eligibility requirements to be able to sponsor membership candidates. The requirements

are based on the criteria in our bylaws. A copy of the bylaws and sponsorship applications will be available at the March

general body meeting.

Welcome Soror!

Zeta Chi Omega welcomes Soror Khia Ross. Soror Khia was initiated into the Lamda Delta Chapter

at Longwood University in 2008. Her major was Sociology and Education with a minor in Psychol-

ogy. Soror Khia currently works at the Office of Naval Research and Acquisitions. She likes to

read, play sports and spend time with her sweetie, Thomas, who is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi

Fraternity, Inc. Soror Khia joined Zeta Chi Omega in December 2011. Welcome Soror Khia!

OFFICER AND COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN TRAINING The Annual Leadership Training Workshop for Officers, Chairmen, and Co-Chairmen will take place March 10, 2012 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This is an obligatory workshop for all officers, committee chairmen and co-chairmen. Remember to bring your national and Chapter documents, and position notebook. “PROTOCOL SMART”

Protocol is the responsibility of all members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®. Protocol is doing the right thing, at the right time, in a consistent manner. It enhances a more sisterly environment and helps all sorors move gracefully as we uphold our Sorority’s image. As a Chapter member, are you being PROTOCOL SMART? Following are a few protocol practices to remember: 1) Chapter members should maintain all Sorority docu-

ments in safe and secure location in the home, i.e. Chapter financial reports or written reports, Chapter bylaws, Alpha Kappa Alpha Constitution & Bylaws, and Manual of Standard Procedure).

2) Maintain proper decorum in business meetings.

3) Dress appropriately, in business attire.

4) Arrive before official start time.

5) Speak only when recognized by the presiding officer

6) Projects voice or moves to a microphone when speak-ing so everyone can hear.

7) Accept the decision of the majority. 8) Avoid walking during mediation periods. 9) Maintain Chapter business within the Chapter. 10) Offer commendations to sorors for a job well done. 11) Offer constructive criticism with the intent of being a

part of the solutions; avoids undue criticism. 12) Offer special consideration to elderly sorors (seating,

transportation assistance, securing handouts, meeting notifications, etc.)

Tea roses to Soror Caroline Howard, who volunteered to send Valentine cards to our Golden and Sick/Shut-In so-rors on behalf the committee, and to the awesome buddy sorors for making a special Valentine’s Day call to your respective buddy. This month we spotlight our newest Golden Girls, Sorors Bettie Cooley and Clarice Crudup. As all of our Golden jewels have been spotlighted to this point, look for a new feature in the upcoming issues of The Ivyette. Any soror interested in being a buddy soror to a Golden or Sick/Shut-in soror should contact the co-chairmen. Our next DGS Committee meeting is TBD.

Soror Bettie I. Cooley was initiated in Zeta Chi Omega in 1962. She graduated from Winston-Salem Teachers Col-lege in Winston-Salem, North Carolina with a BS degree in Elementary Education and a minor in Music. She also did graduate work at New York University.

Soror Bettie has served on the Luncheon Fashion Show Committee and hosted the Mother-Daughter Tea at her home. She attended all Zeta Chi Omega meetings, was very active and participated in activities during her more healthy years.

Soror Bettie retired from the Fairfax County Public Schools System in 1983. She taught for 35 years.

Soror Bettie is a member of Christ Fellowship Church in Herndon, Virginia. She is also a member of the "We, Us and Friends Civic Social Club.‖ This group provides col-lege scholarships to young people. Two of her dear friends, Sorors Loretta Berry and Deloris Evans, are also members of "We, Us and Friends.‖ She is married to Mr. Junius Cooley, and they will cele-brate their 60th wedding anniversary in June 2012. They reside in Oakton, Virginia.

Soror Bettie has two daughters: Antoinette and Valerie, both of whom were Zeta Chi Omega Debutantes. She has 6 grandchildren -- all boys: Tim, Joshua and Daniel (Antoinette's sons) and David, Marvin and Michael (Valerie's sons).

Clarice Crudup

Soror Clarice Burthey Crudup is a Life Member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, Inc.®, and is Zeta Chi Omega’s newest ―Golden Soror.‖ She was initiated in the Gamma Delta Omega Chapter, Portsmouth, Virginia, in December 1962. She immediately transferred to Zeta Chi Omega Chapter in January 1963. Soror Crudup earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education from Norfolk State University. She was Salutatorian of the 1962 graduating class, and was elected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universi-ties, in 1962. She did graduate study in Finance at the George Washington University in Washington, DC. Clarice retired from two careers — Virginia State Business Education Instructor (20 years); and Federal Accountant (10 years) and Financial Management Analyst (10) years with Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Edu-cation, Washington, DC, respectively. Since retirement, Soror Crudup became an entrepreneur, as Independent Distributor (Director) of Shaklee Health products in 2005. Her latest endeavor is as licensed Travel Agent with BMW Travel & Tours, in Alexandria, VA. To date, she continues to work with these two organiza-tions. Soror Clarice has held several offices in Zeta Chi Omega — Epistoleus, Grammateus (2 terms) and Hodegos. She is an active member of Ephesians Baptist Church, in Clin-ton, MD. She has been a member of Ephesians’ Gospel Choir, and served many years as the Minister of Music in her church. Clarice enjoys fitness exercises, reading, and traveling (when there is time). She is active with her community in

Fort Washington, MD and is a Charter Member of its Har-mony Hallers senior’s group. At every opportunity, she mentors young people in her community and church. Soror Clarice is the proud parent of one son, Darrin, and is the Godmother of Soror Michele Crawley, who is also a member of Zeta Chi Omega Chapter.

2012 Cotillion On Saturday, February 11, 2012, the prospective debu-tantes had their first official practice at Samuel Tucker Ele-mentary School. The photographer took personality pic-tures of the prospective debutantes and pictures of the es-corts and the Cotillion Committee members. Also, on Satur-day the ads and patrons were turned in. Following the rehearsal, the prospective debutantes, es-corts, parents and committee members went to see the movie Red Tails, as a cultural enrichment activity. Tea roses to the Retreat and the Worship Service/Brunch Committees for jobs well done. The Mother/Daughter Tea will be held on April 1, 2012 from 3-5 PM at the Goodwin House West, Falls Church, VA. The 55th Debutante Cotillion will be held on April 14, 2012 at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Center, Alexandria, VA. Tickets will be available before and after the March Chapter meet-ing. The cost of tickets is eighty dollars ($80.00) The next Cotillion Committee meeting will be via telephone conference call on Wednesday, March 14, 8:00 PM.
