This past Saturday, Feb. 14, membersof Ohio University and the Athens

community roughed the cold to raisemoney for Special Olympics athletesfrom Ohio. This event, the Polar BearPlunge, is one of the Special Olympicsbiggest fundraisers each year.

The second annual Polar Bear Plungeat OU, held at Dow Lake at StroudsRun, was titled Freezin for a Reasonand hosted by the fraternity Phi KappaTheta and the OU Police Department.Freezin for a Reason was the first ofeight Polar Bear Plunges in Ohio.

The event is structured like a walk-a-

thon, where teams raise money prior tothe event in order to have one or moremembers plunge into the water.Participants at OU needed to raise aminimum of $50 to plunge. Teams met

at Strouds Run at 1 p.m. and plunged at1:50 p.m.

Our team raised $180, which gave usthree girls the opportunity to plunge intothe water and 'freeze for a reason,'"participant Laura Connor said. "Eventhough it was really, really cold, it was alot of fun and we all felt great knowingwe raised money for such a greatcause."

The event also featured a costumecontest. Participants wore costumesranging from the Ninja Turtles to Cupidto a hillbilly. Along with the funniestcostume, prizes were awarded to the

top fundraiser and top fundraising team. The whole event was very fun. For

next year, we talked about making it arace between classes within our sororityto try to raise more money so we couldhave more girls jump in the water. Its allfor such a great cause and was a great, fun way to get a lot of people in thecommunity involved, Caitlin Reagan, team captain for Alpha Xi Delta, said.
