OnDecember6,1929,PiKappaPhiFraternityreceivedape::ontotheSupremeCouncil(thenlocatedat636ChurchStreetinEvanston,Illinois)foraPiKappaPhicharterfromalocalgroupofmenatWestVirginiaUniversitycallingthemselvestheDeltaEpsilonFraternity.TheDeltaEp-silonmenwereorganizedin1924by“tenyoungmenofgoodstandingandreputa:on.”Theiraimswerehigh,andtheirstandardofbehavior,scholarshipandaccomplishmentwasexem-plary.Ofthetenmen,sixwereelectedtoTauBetaPi(thehonoraryengineeringfraternity),threetoPhiLambdaUpsilon(thehonorarychemistryfraternity),andtwotoPhiBetaKappa(thehonoraryacademicfraternity).Duringthethreeyearperiodpriortope::oningPiKappaPhi,themenhadanaverageannualscholarshiprankingofsixamong22na:onalandlocalfraterni-:esoncampus.

TheDeltaEpsilonac:vi:esoutsideofscholarshiprepresentedmorethantwentycampusorga-niza:onsincludingtheDrama:cClub,Football,Wrestling,IntramuralSports,Religiousworkandotherinterests.TheDeanofMenreportedthegroup’ssocialac:vi:estobe“uniformlyofhighorderandneverhadoccasiontodisciplinethechapterinanyway.”

WestVirginiaUniversityPresidentJohnRoscoeTurnerwastheauthorofthe1929pe::ontoPiKappaPhi.“Itwillbeapleasure,Iassureyou,towelcomePiKappaPhiFraternitytothecampusoftheWestVirginiaUniversity.IamsurethiswouldbeofhighprofittotheUniversity,tothegroupofboyswhoarepe::oningyou,andanaddi:ontoyourownorganiza:onwhichItrustwillmeasuretothehighstandardsyoumaintain.”

ThereisalevelofsignificancetothePresident’sle\erandtheDeltaEpsilonFraternitype::onbeingsentonDecember6toarriveintheSupremeCouncilofficebyFoundersDayonDecem-ber10.

In1929,the“eighteensubstan:albrickandstonebuildings”thatcomprisedWestVirginiaUni-versitywerevaluedat$4,462,000,andtheenrollmentwas2,407.MountaineerFieldhadjustbeenbuiltfor$500,000andhadasea:ngcapacityof36,500.ThisstadiumwouldshowcaseWestVirginiaUniversityfootballforthenext50years.TheWestVirginiamen’sbasketballteamin1929hadthedis:nc:onofbeingtheonlycollegiateteamtodefeatPi\sburgh’schampionteam.The“backyardbrawl”startedwithfootballin1919andwaswellestablishedby1929.

GreekLifeatWestVirginiaUniversitywasthrivingin1929.Thefirstna:onalsocialfraternitywasestablishedoncampusin1883and46yearslaterhadgrownto21na:onalfraterni:es,sevenna:onalsorori:es,fivelocalfraterni:esandthreelocalsorori:es–36organiza:onsintotal.Fraterni:esweregovernedbytheCouncilofAdministra:onandtheInter-FraternityCouncil.Therewerealso35HonorarySocie:esin1929,manyofwhichexisttoday.PhiBetaKappa,Sphinx,andMortarBoardarejustafew.

DeltaEpsilonFraternityHistory

DeltaEpsilonFraternitywasfoundedinthefallof1924bytheeffortsofasmallgroupofstu-dents,andtheins:ga:onofHeadCoachDr.C.W.Spears,amemberofDeltaKappaEpsilonFra-ternity.ThegroupwasgrantedacharterbytheUniversityBoardofAdministra:ononMay21,1925.Theorganiza:onprogressedrapidlyfromitsincep:on,sociallyandfinancially,andinthefallof1926movedintoahouse.Thefirstformalini:a:onwasheldonDecember12,1926.

ThesemendrewuptheCons:tu:onandBy-Laws,formulatedaritual,anddesignatedthepinandcoat-of-arms.Dr.Spearshelpedorganizethefraternityforthepurposeofpe::oningDeltaKappaEpsilon,butnoac:onwasevertakeninthisdirec:on.HeleptheUniversitytocoachattheUniversityofMinnesota;interestinDeltaKappaEpsilonlaggedandthefraternitybentalleffortstowardbuildingastronglocalfraternity.

AlthoughnothingisnotedintheformalhistoryofDeltaEpsilonFraternityarchives,thegeneralbeliefisthatoneofPiKappaPhi’sFoundingFathers,Dr.A.PelzerWagner,wasavisi:ngprofes-soratWestVirginiaUniversityin1928andwasintroducedtotheDeltaEpsilonFraternity.Dr.WagnersharedthehistoryofPiKappaPhiwiththeDeltaEpsilonbrothers,whichmayhaveper-suadedthemtomovetowardchoosingPiKappaPhiforana:onalaffilia:on.

ThefirstDeltaEpsilonhousewaslocatedat207FifeAvenue.Inthespringof1927becauseofthegrowthofthegroupitbecamenecessarytosecurelargerandmoresuitablequartersandtheymovedtoasixteenroomhouseideallylocatedonthemainstreetwhereitiswithineasyreachoftheUniversityandthebusinesssec:onoftown.(ThehousewaslocatedonHighStreetwherethecurrentPostOfficewasbuilt).

In1926aDeltaEpsilonAlumniAssocia:onwasformedbythegradua:nggroup.Eachmanagreedtopayyearlyduesandtosignapledgetopay$100tothefraternitywithinfouryearsapergradua:on;thismoneytobedepositedinafundtobecalledtheDeltaEpsilonHouseFund.

The1929Pe::onwasrecommendedbythefollowingUniversityrepresenta:ves:

HarryE.Stone,DeanofMenIhavepersonallyandin0matelyacquaintedmyselfwiththemembersofDeltaEpsilonfraternityforthepastfouryears.Ihavewatchedthemmeetandsolvefraternityproblemsandgrowinstrengthandinfluencethereby.Ihavea>endedtheirsocialfunc0onsonmanyoccasionsandfoundthemuniformlyofhighstandard.Ihavehadnodifficultyinsecuringatall0mesthewill-ingcoopera0onofthisgroupwiththeUniversityadministra0on.

AtpresentDeltaEpsilonhastwentyac0vemembersandtwelvepledges.Itisrepresentedinawidevarietyofcampusorganiza0onsandac0vi0es,athle0c,scholas0c,musical,drama0candreligious.Itisabovetheaverageinscholarship,hastherespectofotherfraterni0es,isinsoundfinancialcondi0on,andineverywayisworthyofmembershipinafraternitywiththesplendidreputa0onPiKappaPhiFraternityenjoys.

DeltaEpsilonhasenjoyedasteadyandwellbalancedgrowthsinceitsincep0on,andisnowtheoutstandinglocalontheWestVirginiacampus.Wewouldliketoseethemaffiliatedwithana-0onalfraternityanddonothesitatetorecommendthemtoPiKappaPhi.

Oneoftheoriginalmentope::onPiKappaPhi,JamesEdwin(J.E.)Winter,waschosenapergradua:ontobeonthePiKappaPhiCommi\eeonScholarship,andcoordinatedtheacademiceffortsforallPiKappaPhiChaptersinDistricts1,2,3,and8.District8includedAlphaNuChap-teratTheOhioStateUniversityandAlphaRhoChapteratWestVirginiaUniversity.TheCom-mi\eewaschairedbyDr.W.E.EdingtonatDePauwUniversityinGreencastle,Indiana.

DuringtheMay16/17,1930Ini:a:onweekend,threemorememberswereini:atedonMay17toformtheBetaClass.Theywere:

Butcharteringinearly1930wasarockyfounda:onfinancially.OnOctober24,1929“BlackThursday”startedthemostdevasta:ngstockmarketcrashinthehistoryoftheUnitedSates,whentakingintoconsidera:onthefullextentanddura:onofitsfallout.Thecrashsignaledthebeginningofthe10-yearGreatDepressionthataffectedallWesternindustrializedcountries.

Inthefallof1930,10menwerepledgedtothechapter:PaulS.Moyers,CharlesYoung,RobertL.Harper,JohnBradley,RalphIzard,RichardSiers,PaulThompson,LindwoodYoung,MauriceWhite,andBenjaminLeoWilliams;allfromWestVirginia.Thechapterwouldstartaregularcommunica:onwithitsalumni,andtheynamedthepublica:onTheAlphaRhose.

AlphaRhoengagedinitsfirstsororitymixerwiththemembersofDeltaDeltaDeltaSororityonNovember1,1979attheRedCellarinMorgantown.CraigWinkelmann(AP69)becameachar-termemberoftheGoldenKeyNa:onalHonorSociety.

1980OnApril11/12,1980,AlphaRhocombinedtheireffortsinafull-scalePUSH-a-thonwhichtrav-eled100milesfromMorgantowntoParkersburg,WV.ThePUSH-a-thonwastheculmina:onofayear-longeffortbythechaptertodesignafundraisingeventwhichwouldnotonlyprovesuc-cessfulbutwouldenabletheen:rechaptertopar:cipate.PlansfortheeventbeganinAugust1979whenchaptermembersa\endingSupremeChapterinCharlestonmetwithPUSHDesign-erTomSayre.UponreturningtoMorgantown,Co-ChairmenfortheprojectSteveWoodard(AP86)andChuckDunbar(AP90)begancoordina:ngmediacoverage,smallfundraisingevents,supportfromcommunitygroups,andlogis:cs.

Apermonthsofplanning,theactualPUSH-a-thonbeganearlyonthemorningofApril11asDeanJosephGluck,VicePresidentofWVU,tookthefirstturnpushingthewheelchair.PUSHDesignerTomSayreandChapterLeadershipConsultantPatrickFarley(AP67)werealsopresentforthisevent.

Theactualsafetyconsidera:onsandrouteplanningwerecoordinatedbyBrotherDunbar.The100milejourneywascompletedin16.5hourswithanaveragespeedofsixmilesperhour.Atonepointthepoliceclockedthechairtravelingat12milesperhour!
