SPIRIT & INSPIRATION
The Gift List
Well here we are, it’s that time again
to start on “Ye Olde” Christmas list.
First let’s look at the one from last year,
because a few things might have been missed.
It says, “gift cards, games, brown leather boots,
a cellphone with unlimited data;”
And what is the other thing we have on here…
“two tickets to the New Years Eve gala!”
That’s not the list we should have made;
all those things would have cost so much.
Here are a few we should hold in our heart,
the endless list with a Heavenly touch:

MESSAGE FROM THE ANTI-BASILEUS
Soror Tamara RoweThe final month of the year is upon us. Let us remember the Four Seasons of
Advent: Hope, Love, Joy and Peace. “Then the angel said to them, “Do not be
afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all
people.” (Luke 2:10, NKJV)
Tea roses and pearls to all who contributed to our success in 2016: Target Committee Chairmen
and all sorors who volunteered their time and efforts!!!!! In remembrance of and reverence for
our Founders, please be mindful of our Founders’ Day service project.
We host our Annual Senior Citizens Holiday Luncheon Saturday, December 10th. Please see the
report for additional details. Thank you to all who have volunteered to serve at our festive
celebration. Our invitees are excited for an encore presentation! We hope to see you there.
Please join us Tuesday, December 13th for our final Project Stepout session of the year, taking
place at the Charles Houston Recreation Center, 901 Wythe Street, Alexandria, VA 223134 from
4:00 – 5:00 pm.
Our ASCEND chairmen are planning our final activity for this calendar year. The details for this
activity are provided in the Target I Section. In November, our ASCEND scholars received an
inspiring message from Ms. Dana Hall on finding their purpose. Ms. Hall spoke about the
importance of the Four “Cs” -- Confidence, Commitment, Courage and Consistency. The scholars
were tasked with creating their respective Vision Boards that will serve as the catalyst for where
they want to see their lives progress over the next five years. Thank you to Soror Geneva Greene
for providing her own vision board.
Thank you to all who volunteered for Project Giveback, Saturday, November 19th at the Gums
Springs Community Center!! Our ASCEND scholars and prospective debutantes came out to
assemble Thanksgiving Baskets for distribution to residents living in Northern Virginia. A few
Chapter members served as drivers. The recipients were extremely appreciative of the packages
they received.
Special thanks to Soror Rhonda for allowing Sorors Gloria Bell, Crystal Lander and me to
assemble gift bags for the Women Vets Rock in her home on November 9th.
In closing, the sunset of my term as your Anti-Basileus draws near. It has been an honor and a privilege to serve and guide the implementation for the many endeavors of Zeta Chi Omega Chapter as she provides “Service to All Mankind.” Thank you for the many words of encouragement and the acts of kindness and support I received throughout the year. I cannot express enough the depth of my gratitude and appreciation! Zeta Chi Omega Chapter will continue her service mandates as Soror Robin McCoy transitions into the Program Chairman position for 2017. May God continue to bless us and may we continue to be a blessing to others!

Every year on December 1st, the world gathers to bring awareness to the fight against HIV.
Additionally, this is the chance for people to show their support for people with HIV/AIDS by
wearing a red ribbon. World AIDS day provides a platform to talk about HIV and the devastating
effects it still has in our community.
Approximately 1.2 million people are living with HIV in the United States, and 1 in 8 don’t know it. African Americans have the highest prevalence of HIV compared to all other racial/ethnic groups within the United States.
World AIDS Day Submitted by Soror Shanta Whitaker
10
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC): In 2014, 44% (19,540 people) of estimated new HIV diagnoses in the United States
were among African Americans, who comprised 12% of the US population.
Among all African Americans diagnosed with HIV in 2014, an estimated 73% (14,305 people) were men and 26% (5,128 people) were women.
Among all African Americans diagnosed with HIV in 2014, an estimated 57% (11,201 people) were gay or bisexual men. Of those gay and bisexual men, 39% (4,321 people) were young men aged 13 to 24.
From 2005 to 2014, the number of new HIV diagnoses among African American women fell 42%, though it is still high compared to women of other races/ethnicities. In 2014, an estimated 1,350 Hispanic/Latino women and 1,483 white women were diagnosed with HIV, compared to 5,128 African American women.
The statistics are quite alarming for our community. Stigma, fear, discrimination, homophobia, and other negative perceptions about HIV testing are keeping the HIV rate high among us. For this reason, it is important that we continue to educate people about HIV and the necessity of knowing their status. We need to equip our young people as they are going off to college about the importance of abstaining from sex or using protection if they decide to engage in sexual intercourse. We need to equip them with the information about HIV and how it is transmitted and how they can protect themselves.
What can the ladies of Zeta Chi Omega do to promote HIV
awareness on World AIDS day?
It is important that we talk to our friends and family about HIV and protection. We can also
spread the word about HIV and World AIDS day using our social media outlets. Consider tweeting
the following statements in December:
Within the U.S., African Americans represent 44% of new HIV cases. It is important to know your status #WorldAIDSDay
Every day, about 5,600 people contract #HIV. That’s more than 230 every hour www.aids2016.org#AIDS2016 #WorldAIDSDay
The fight against #AIDS is about social justice & reaching those who still lack access. www.aids2016.org #AIDS2016 #WorldAIDSDay
Over 1 million people die every year from #AIDS. That's 1 million moms, dads, kids & friends #WorldAIDSDay www.aids2016.org #AIDS2016
So sorors, get out there and share your knowledge of HIV, and encourage those you love to know their status. To find out more information about World AIDS day, please check out: http://www.worldaidsday.org/

CARPENTER’S SHELTER MEAL SERVICE:
The Target III Families Strengthening shared in a moment of joy and pleasure with those who
are homeless on Sunday, November 27th. It was rewarding, as well as a humbling experience
to serve a community that is oftentimes overlooked. We served a delicious, nutritious hot
meal prepared by Great American Buffet. The Carpenter's Shelter residents enjoyed the food
and fellowship. Thanks to Sorors Naomi Fauntleroy and Tamara Rowe for leading our meal
service, as well as those sorors who volunteered. Your presence always plays a pivotal role in
making this experience special for the residents. We really loved having you on the team!
November concluded our meal service for 2016. We look forward to you once again being of
service in 2017. Should you have questions regarding an opportunity to serve for the bi-
monthly meal service, please contact Soror Saundra McCullough-Cobey,
Thank you sorors for your continued support to be of service to all mankind.

On November 8, 2016, the members of Zeta Chi Omega did more than vote! Several members
reminded family and friends to vote on Facebook and Twitter via the #AKA1908 or #BeTheVote.
Several sorors supported their candidate of choice by supplying literature at various polling
locations and were poll watchers in their districts. After a long day, the members met at TGIF
Friday’s for a Zeta Chi Omega Watch Party. Members watched the first tally for the Electoral
College.
There are elections in Virginia next year! Our work will continue as we provide details on the

Happy Holidays to you from your Sisterly Relations Committee!!!
Chapter Movie Outing
We extend a heartfelt thank you to the approximately 20 sorors who joined us at the
movies on Saturday, November 12th to see ‘Almost Christmas’. We laughed really hard and
enjoyed the fellowship of one another’s company tremendously. Movie popcorn didn’t hurt
either. Following the movie, ten of us dined at Ted’s Montana Grill where the food was
delicious and the company even better. Overall, it was a great event due in no small part to
your participation!
We anticipate seeing even more sorors at the next movie outing in celebration of
International Sisterly Relations Day in January 2017. We will see ‘Hidden Figures’, a
biographical drama which tells the story of three brilliant African-American women at NASA
-- Katherine Johnson (Taraji P. Henson), Dorothy Vaughn (Octavia Spencer) and Mary Jackson
(Janelle Monáe), all of whom are members of our beloved sorority. They served as the
brains behind one of the greatest operations in history: the launch of astronaut John Glenn
into orbit, a stunning achievement that restored the nation's confidence, turned around the
Space Race, and galvanized the world. More details to follow.
Holiday Party
We look forward to seeing those of you who will be attending our annual Holiday luncheon
on Saturday, December 3, at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City, 2799 Jefferson Davis Highway
Alexandria, VA. The luncheon is for sorors only. Valet parking in the hotel garage will be
available at the discounted rate of $8, subject to available space. Once garage space is no
longer available, street parking and nearby public garages are options. A Chapter photo will
be taken prior to lunch being served. The attire is black with green accents. No pants.

“…to be supreme in service to all mankind” … First Supreme Basileus Nellie Quander, author of
the Preamble to the Constitution of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. ® One of the first service
projects completed by the founders was making dolls for the children of families migrating
north to the D.C. area.
Zeta Chi Omega Chapter will continue the tradition of completing a service project for our
Founders’ Day tribute and celebration.
The Founders’ Day Committee has chosen as its service project the purchase of SmarTrip® Cards
for the residents at the Carpenter’s Shelter. The SmarTtrip® Cards are permanent, rechargeable
cards that can used to pay fares for Metrorail, Metrobus and other participating transit
agencies as well as parking fees at Metro operated facilities. The card costs $2 and comes with
$8 in stored value for a total price of $10. SmarTrip® Cards can be purchased at any Metro
Station, CVS, Target and Giant stores. SmarTrip® can also be purchased online at
https://smartrip.wmata.com/storefront. If you would like more information about the
SmarTrip® Card, please call (1-888-762-7874).
Please remember: All sorors are encouraged to attend Founders’ Day, January 28, 2017 at the
Fort Belvoir Officers’ Club. The cost is $40 per person, and the attire is pink, green or pink and
green, no pants. We will be receiving your SmarTrip® Cards at the December and January
General Membership Meetings.
