Who Must Attend the Chapter Orientation Workshop?   Any Soror who plans to sponsor/co-sponsor a candidate

  All workshop presenters

  Chapter Basileus, Anti-Basileus, Grammateus, Tamiouchos, and

Epistoleus   Any active chapter member who plans to participate in the MIP sessions

  If a soror does not attend the Chapter Operations Workshop, she may only

attend the Final Commitment and Reaffirmation Ceremony on Sunday.

Article III ,Section 3C Sponsorship Requirement To be eligible to sponsor/co-sponsor a candidate for membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., a soror must have… v  been an active member of the Sorority and a member of the Chapter, in good standing for at least 24 months prior to sponsorship v  attended at least one (1) Conference (Regional, International, or Cluster) in the last two (2) years (24) months prior to sponsorship v  attended at least seven (7) chapter meetings in the twelve (12) months prior to sponsorship v  a minimum number of program activities identified by the Membership Committee.

Criteria for Prospective Candidates ü Attainment of a baccalaureate degree with cumulative avg. of C+ or a graduate or professional degree from an accredited senior college or university ü High ethical standards ü Exceptional leadership ü Willingness to participate ü Desired skills and talents ü Non-Membership in a National Pan-Hellenic Council or National Pan-Hellenic Conference sorority ü Demonstration of outstanding service to the community ü Likelihood for lifelong active membership in the sorority ü Submission to a background check ü Attendance at Chapter Information Session

Membership Forms & Materials

1.  Sponsor/Co-Sponsor Membership Recommendation Form A soror may sponsor/co-sponsor a maximum of two(2) prospective candidates per MIP.

The sponsor must submit the following to the Grammateus by the specified date.

v  One Sponsorship/Co Sponsorship Membership Recommendation Form v  Two (2) Letters of Recommendation from co-sponsors in the chapter v  Graduate Membership Legacy Application (if applicable) The forms for the perspective candidate must show evidence of leadership

ability and outstanding service to the community, verification of the candidate’s ability to support sorority membership and projects and specific talents and how those talents can be used as an asset to the chapter.

Letters of Recommendation should include personal statements explaining

why the individual should be considered for membership, verification of her ability to be financially active and specific facts to document leadership ability, outstanding service and talents.

2. Prospective Candidate Application Form This form, along with the letter of invitation, General Information regarding Graduate Membership Brochure are mailed to prospective candidates brought forth by eligible sponsors by the Basileus, co-signed by the Membership Chairman 3. Graduate Legacy Application Form (if Applicable) A Graduate candidate who is the

Ø Legal Ward (one who’s permanent care, control, and custody legally have been placed with a soror by an appropriate court)

of an active or deceased soror is considered a Legacy Candidate.

The living family member soror must have been active at least 24 consecutive months immediately preceding the presentation for recommendation for Legacy candidate. The family member soror obtains the Legacy Application from the Basileus. The Legacy application is completed and signed by the family member, sponsoring soror, and her chapter Basileus and Grammateus if she is a member of a chapter. The Graduate Legacy Application is accompanied by 2 letters of recommendation and 1 Sponsor/Co-Sponsor Membership Recommendation Form. The Regional Director shall notify the chapter of the status of the Legacy application submitted. The chapter does not vote upon an applicant under the legacy provision.

Soror Dos

•  Respect the fact that the Membership (MIP) Intake Process is secret.

•  Consider the MIP a serious activity of the Sorority. •  Serve as a positive role model for the candidates. •  Share the Ivy Leaf and other sorority materials, if requested

to do so by the Membership/Resource Committees. •  Cooperate and make every effort to attend all activities and

be punctual. •  Promote teamwork between candidates and sorors. •  Refrain from hazing or any other punitive actions that might

intimidate candidates. •  Attend MIP only if they attended the Chapter Orientation

Workshop and signed the Soror Commitment Statement.

•  Solicit from among their friends, individuals to “pledge” AKA •  Hold “get-acquainted” gatherings (jewelry parties, cook-

outs, luncheons) •  Collect money from prospective candidates for sorors’

lodging and meals during Membership Intake Process. •  Hold any meetings or activities with prospective candidates •  Contact prospective candidates to ascertain if they are

interested in Alpha Kappa Alpha. •  Reveal information about the Membership Intake Process to

individuals seeking membership consideration. This includes responding to telephone calls, notes, cards, letters, direct inquiry, etc. Inquirers may be directed to our website, www.aka1908.com or given a copy of General Information Regarding Graduate Membership brochure.

Soror Don’ts - Continued •  Discuss chapter business, voting results, candidates’

names, activities, etc., outside of the chapter. •  Bypass the line of communication between

candidates and the Membership Committee. •  Criticize, discuss or ridicule other sorors, sorority

policies, materials, fees, and/or the candidates; orientation program requirements, especially in the presence of candidates.

•  Provide substantive historical, current, or future facts about Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority without coordinating the activity with the Membership Committee and designated resource committees.

•  Subvert the Membership Intake Process in any way.
