Leer from the President Greetings Alpha Chi Omega Sisters! What a challenging, crazy time we are living in. As we start another year of sisterhood and programs, I hope all are well and are adjusting to this new normal. Normally, I would be providing a report on the Alpha Chi Omega convention, which was to be held in Baltimore this year, well that didn’t happen! BUT we did get surprise visitors on our July zoom board meeting call, Angela Costley Harris, National President, and Laura Knobel, Asst. Director Lifetime Engagement, joined our call to let us know that the Mu Mu Alumnae Chapter was awarded the Continuing Excellence Award for the 21st consecutive time. This award is presented to the alumnae chapter that best exemplifies the ideals and mission of Alpha Chi Omega through its accomplishments in all areas of alumnae chapter development. In order to be considered for this award, an alumnae chapter must have received the National Council Trophy or Continuing Excellence Award at least once during the last five years. This award is a tribute to all the loyal members of Mu Mu and the Real.Strong.Women we have in Kansas City supporting Alpha Chi Omega and our community. It is a wonderful way to start off a new year of sisterhood for the Mu Mu Alumnae Chapter of Greater Kansas City. Whether you are a new grad, new to Kansas City, or just now have the time to get back to AX, Mu Mu welcomes you and hopes to see you at some of our programs in the coming year. The Alpha Chi Omega bond is for a lifetime, no matter when it starts. Your alumnae experience can be anything you want it to be and your Mu Mu AX sisters are here to help and support you. Although we have had to adjust our programming due to COVID, we are hoping to have a variety of programs and opportunities to meet sisters from across the country. We have a great mix of activities to choose from, including monthly programs, GAMMA-day time meetings, monthly Lunch Bunch, Young Alum outings, Mom and Tot, and fundraising/ altruism events for family and friends. In-person or virtually, we will adjust accordingly. Zoom provided us a way to “see” each other with virtual events this past Spring, so we can use that option, as necessary, going forward to ensure we stay connected. Please contact me or any other board member if you have any questions, need a ride or need to learn about zoom. Our first program of the year is in September. This year it is a celebration of our winning the Continuing Excellence award and will be held virtually. It is a casual evening of meeting old and new sisters and celebrating our collegiate chapters. This year we are also discussing a Hall of Commitment ceremony for all the recent graduates that didn’t get to experience the ceremony at their chapters due to the COVID shutdown. This might need to be virtual. Check out the program schedule and mark the dates on your calendar. Event schedules are subject to change this year due to COVID, so watch for emails updates closer to events. Please consider becoming a dues paying member. Your dues go to support programming, collegiate chapters, National dues, Panhellenic dues and scholarships. Dues are $35 for standard membership (with reduced rates of $30 for 50 year members and $25 for recent graduates). In addition, we have levels of membership support. Members paying $50 will be at the Carnation level, members paying $75 will be at the Lyre level, and members paying $100 will be at the Hera level. These levels include membership dues. The additional amounts paid go to support scholarship/grants, collegiate relations, programming and other Mu Mu expenses. Thanks to all the loyal members that pay their dues, serve on the board, support our fundraisers through attendance and donations, and attend our monthly programs. Finance UpdateAnnual dues remain the same for the next year. Dues are $35 for standard membership (with reduced rates of $30 for 50-year members and $25 for recent graduates). In addition, we have levels of membership support. Members paying $50 will be at the Carnation level, members paying $75 will be at the Lyre level, and members paying $100 will be at the Hera level. These levels include membership dues and the additional amounts paid go to support scholarship/grants, collegiate relations, programming and other Mu Mu expenses. Members will be recognized for their generosity in the membership directory. In 2019-2020, we had 103 dues paying members (37 Standard, 29 Classic, 4 New Graduates, 20 Carnation, 2 Lyre, and 11 Hera.)

Donations from Mu Mu funds for the 2019-2020 membership year were as follows:

$ 11,414 Alpha Chi Omega Foundation - a portion of this was split with Rose Brooks via LPI$ 1,250 Alpha Chi Omega Foundation - Day of Caring$ 500 Collegiate Relations$ 300 Kansas City Panhellenic Scholarship Fund$ 200 Founders Day Challenge

These donations were made possible through our fundraising e orts, including the Silence the Violence Event (which was a virtual bingo this year due to COVID-19) and local alumnae donations to Mu Mu. The White Elephant sale in January raised $663. This event helps to o set operating expenses. Additional income from directory advertisements helps o set some of the cost of the printing of the directory. Please support our directory advertisers with your business. Dues paying members will receive the 2020-2021 membership directory. The directory includes our calendar of events, board members, meeting schedules, and your local sisters’ phone numbers and addresses. The dues and support you provide to Mu Mu are appreciated and go to support a variety of programs.

2020 Silence the Vi ence Event RecapMu Mu of Alpha Chi Omega-Kansas City would like to thank you for your support of our 15th Annual Silence the Violence event. This year’s event raised over $11,400 in support of the Rose Brooks Center and the Alpha Chi Omega Foundation. With this year’s donation, our fi fteen-year total is $100,000. This year was particularly challenging with the COVID-19 virus and the needs were even greater. Your support and donations to our event provide resources for these groups to continue the critical work they do for victims of domestic violence and domestic violence awareness. We appreciate your support. Stay well.

    Sincere thanks,

C tinuing Exce ence AwardOn July 14th, the Mu Mu board gathered on Zoom for what they thought was an update meeting to discuss Mu Mu business. However, Angela Costley Harris, National President, and Laura Knobel, Asst. Director Lifetime Engagement, made a surprise appearance to let us know that the Mu Mu Alumnae Chapter was awarded the 2020 Continuing Excellence Award for the 21st consecutive time!

Angela shared these words to present our award, “The Alumnae Chapter Continuing Excellence Award is presented to an alumnae chapter that exemplifi es the ideals and mission of Alpha Chi Omega…accomplishments in all areas of alumnae chapter development. Winners must have received the National Council Trophy or the Continuing Excellence Award at least once during the last fi ve years in order to be eligible for this award. This year, there was one chapter that stood out. They have received the Continuing Excellence Award 21 consecutive times. And it was clear that they are more than deserving for this honor again. Congratulations to Mu Mu Alumnae Chapter of Kansas City, Missouri.

Mu Mu continues to advance and innovate their operations and membership experience in ways that truly refl ect Alpha Chi Omega’smission and vision. The chapter is actively engaged with Alpha Chi Omega’s Foundation, Community Impact Program and has raised over$88,000 using this program to benefi t both the Foundation and theirlocal domestic violence shelter. Perhaps most impressive are the many ways that Mu Mu works to build sisterhood and connection. From a traveling Lyre Trophy to welcome bags with Kansas City information and treats for new members, it’s clear that sisters feel a very strong connection, both to Mu Mu and Alpha Chi Omega. They are so proud of their involvement with the alumnae chapter and have increased pride in being members of Alpha Chi Omega because of it. Congratulations to all of our sisters from Mu Mu chapter.”

This award is a tribute to all the loyal members of Mu Mu and the Real.Strong.Women we have in Kansas City supporting Alpha Chi Omega and our community. It is a wonderful way to start o a new year of sisterhood for the Mu Mu Alumnae Chapter of Greater Kansas City.
