PAUL BOTWEV ORHII

Dr. Paul Botwev Orhii was born and raised in Lessel in Benue state of Nigeria. He attended St. Francis College, Otukpo, Benue State. While there, he excelled both science and liberal Arts. Pursuant to his childhood dream of becoming a lawyer and

his unquenchable passion for the legal profession, Dr Orhii worked at the High Court of Justice, Makurdi, as a clerk.

Dr. Orhii is multi-lingual, and very proficient in Tiv, Russian, and English Language. He also has a vast exposure to divergent cultural, political, educational and economic systems of the world and a wealth of experience that cuts across different social and cultural backgrounds.

In 2009, the Federal Government of Nigeria, appointed him as the Director General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). The agency is charged with the responsibility of regulating and controlling the importation, exportation, manufacture, advertisement, sales and use of food, drugs, cosmetics, chemicals, medical devices and packaged water.

In this Interview, the NAFDAC Boss talks about this Herculean task.

What was your childhood and upbringing like?

I was brought up in a very, disciplined family. My childhood was very nice. I grew up with my siblings. My mother had nine children altogether and I am in the number two position. We had fun playing with each other as kids. Although we did not have much, we were happy. Sometimes, food was not affordable or enough to go round but like I said, we were happy and I managed to go to school.

As a young boy did you always wanted to study medicine?

Initially, I wanted to study law. My father had urged me to follow the footsteps of my uncle who is also my role model, the Honourable, Justice Katsina Alu who later became the Chief Justice of Nigeria. At that time, he was a lawyer and a role model to my family so my father wanted me to become a lawyer like him. What challenges have you faced and are still facing?

When I got to NAFDAC, I had to bring the My pikin people to face the law. I did that within three weeks of starting work at NAFDAC. Now four

Another major challenge was the 64 percent anti malaria drugs that were found to be fake. I had to immediately, swing into action to reduce the incidence of fake medicine in the country.

reduced the circulation of fake drugs especially in major cities, but we still have the challenge in the rural areas because people over there rely on cheaper medicine. The incidence of fake malaria drugs has been reduced to 20percent by an analysis done by the WHO in our meeting is Buenos Aires in November 2012. We believe that this can be reduced further if we fully begin to

power of taking anti malaria drugs in the hands of the Nigerian consumer who can there and then reject them. We are very optimistic about that as well. Then in terms of prosecution, I have secured about six major convictions and so many other victories in the court since I got to NAFDAC. We recently launched a centre in Onitsha to try to uncode and minimize the circulation of fake drugs in the country and also to make sure Nigerians have access to good quality medicines. These are some of the major challenges and we are on the way to tackling them and we hope that in the near future, Nigeria will become free of fake medicines.

fake drugs. The fake drug market has reduced tremendously since the crackdown of illicit narcotic trade. We have done our best and used cutting edge technology, recruited the masses to

carried out massive public enlightenment to educate our masses. Today, I can say that we are winning the war against counterfeit medicine. We have also increased local production of medicines, the quality has improved and some of them are going through WHO observation. Hopefully, by early next year, we would have

supply of essential medicines of good quality at affordable prices to the people. As a whole, I think we are winning the war.

The general public has a big role to play. Every single Nigerian is a major stake holder because he or she is a potential victim. We all use medicines at one point or drink water or tea or other products which are regulated by NAFDAC. I

example, the journalists have the skill of creating media and public awareness, the musician has a role to sing songs about fake drugs to educate the masses and create public awareness, the policeman has a role to arrest the fake drug

dealers, the religious leaders can enlighten people about this issue. That is why we are working with every member of the society to ensure they play a role. We also work with the traditional rulers, because some people might not necessarily listen to me but will listen to movie actors and actresses. We have the musician 2FACE as one of our NAFDAC Ambassadors. It is key that everybody uses their role to help us

want to help us but they do not know how to identify counterfeit products. Nowadays, counterfeit has become so sophisticated that they

because they go out of their way to copy the NAFDAC number and put it on the product. Therefore, what we have done is to help the masses to use technology by the SMS text messages method so as to help every body by putting this issue into the hands of the general public. If every Nigerian begins to reject this counterfeit drugs then, they will have no market

and they will slowly be eradicated. We also have a helpline that the general public can call to report an incident.

What do you do in your leisure time? Most times I listen to music. I hang out with my

friends, dance and have a good time. More importantly, I read a lot of Russian poems. I like Shakespeare too.

Can you tell us what your everyday fashion is

I actually do not have time to think about fashion. When I get up in the morning, the closest

mostly suits. I hardly have the time to select what to wear.

And your quote of the day?Hard work and Honesty always pays!

7 NAIL CAREMUST HAVE!

These are the tools that should always be in your nail care box for perpetually smooth and lovely looking hands. In this edition, I’m going to show you the tools so you can get them, next time, I’ll teach you how to do the best DIY(Do it yourself) manicure.

Almond nail shape is considered as a classic form, the nails that have a feminine and elegant look. This style will make the fingers look slimmer

and smoother. Although interesting, this style is not too strong and if the nail is damaged some of the length will have to be filed away to rectify.

Thought of as the classical nail shape the nail is filed away at the sides and softly pointed at the tip. Although attractive, this shape does not allow nails to grow to their maximum length, if this is what is desired.

RUNNING AWAY FROM A PAST YOU DID NOT CREATE!

Tomi had said that she had a dream where she saw herself in a train with her best friend, Simi. Suddenly, there was commotion and everyone got scattered and suddenly Simi was no longer with her. She said she found herself going through a dark tunnel with an angel. Then, came a bright light at the end of the tunnel as they approached. At the end of the tunnel was a man dressed in white.

She became afraid and was going to hold the angel that was with her but when she turned, the angel was gone! She was left alone with the man that was in white. Then, she woke up. At this point, she said: “Yomi, do you know I am going to die”?
