I am a sucker for Cinderella stories. I love the grass-to-grace turn of events; the sudden leap from the dungeons to dine at the table of princes. This is what ‘Reality Shows’ do for its winners. From music, dance and acting, recipients become overnight stars; their lives are transformed instantly.

Today, the fashion industry has its first reality show winner, Oisetohanmen (Omon) Isinugben, winner of the ‘Fashion Protégé’ sponsored by MTV and produced by the eponymous Uche of Bella Naija. The show featured 10 wannabe fashion designers vying for the chance to be the first Protégé. Omon topped the group with her winning design – an off the shoulders flourish of tulle with Fuchsia bodice. Pamela Echemunor had a tête-à-tête with the new star. See pp 8-10.

It’s been quiet a week. The journey to Oviri Olomu for the laying to rest of Mama Aritsehoma Amuka-Pemu was an eye opener. WEEKLY FAB LIST!!!by - Fatima Garba

ALLURE’SFASH ION

Easy to wear and ultra-chic, billowy wide-leg trousers, made a huge showing on the spring runways. I know what you’re thinking...and, no, this trend isn’t just for six-foot-tall supermodels, I swear. Just look for a pair that’s leaner on the flare and higher-waisted to elongate your frame.

Almost like a dressy version of a T-shirt, the shift blouse is easy (but so much more sophisticated!). The near-elbow-length sleeve and boxy silhouette keep the look flattering and versatile. Have some fun with extra details, like exciting prints, luxurious textures, and varying necklines.

Looking for the latest trends to transition into!hopefully our weekly fab list will help you decide the major trends to keep you loking fab all day and all week.

WIDE LEG TROUSERS

THE SHIFT BLOUSE

BOMBER JACKETS

ANIMAL ACCENTS

The sporty layering pieces get edgier for this season with adventurously colorful prints, luxe textures and fabrics, and sporty-cool detailing—like mesh weaving and perforations. Like its cousin the moto jacket, the bomber is ultra versatile to temper the girliness of a dress or complement the athletic chicness of dressy shorts. So many celebrities are rocking this trend.

Swans and puppies and foxes, oh my! This season, designers took a walk on the wild side, incorporating animal motifs into their collections. For this trend wear an allover-print frock or a simple bird-embossed piece, it is up to you!

A red carpet event is a high fashion event where attendees go all out to bring on all out glamour. Events like the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), Nigeria Music Awards NMA or the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA), pres-ents the perfect opportunity for celebrities and socialites to slink down the red carpet in beau-tifully crafted dresses. For journalists and keen observes of celebrities, these people bring more than just a piece of garment. Sometimes, what they achieve with that dress stands out than the dress itself. Here ,we share with you what some regular faces on the red carpet bring on.

Nollywood actress and ambassador of Onga, Kate Henshaw Nuttal, is a delight to see on the red carpet. Those who know Kate will attest to the fact that it is rare to see a frown on the actress lovely face. The best accessory they say is a smile and Kate wears hers permanently. Her big smile has endeared her to many because it is always wel-coming when she flashes that smile. Keep smiling Kate, a smile does agree with you.

Since her incursion into the business of fashion styling, for-mer Miss Lux, Ifeoma Williams, has steadily practiced what she preaches. Not given to loud dressing, she is the quintessential elegant dresser, always on point for every occasion. Her recent out-ing at eh AMVCA was something for sore eyes. She looked angelic in this white number that did her great justice.

Beautiful banker, Celine Loader is not the regular banker who wears suits Monday to Friday and forgets how to rock the weekend. With lithe body and figure to die for, Ms Loader does know how to rock the red carpet and she does so in beautifully crafted evening dresses. When it comes to the red carpet, she brings on all time glamour and she achieves this in different colours that suit her. She walks the red carpet in noth-ing less than a glamorous dress.

Ugonna Omeruo belongs to the young generation of designers but gently climb-ing up the ladder. She is sassy and very creative with her dresses. As a young designer, she brings her inspiration translated into creative pieces to the red carpet. Her clothes are a bit edgy some-thing more than ordinary. Her edginess is not limited to clothes. It also extends to hair. But in all, she is always a delight to behold as she has fun ways of wearing her clothes.

Property developer and Allure’s Style Icon does know how to rock the red carpet gracefully. Knowing what to wear has never been a challenge with this Lagos based fashionista. Every dress seems specially tailored for her curvy body. And when she steps on the red carpet, she is a photographer’s delight. With no airs, she takes her time to strike as many poses to please photographers who fall over themselves to have her picture taken.

She is beginning to be a regular at most events. Pretty face Osas is just what she is pretty and graceful. She brings style to the red carpet and this dress won to the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Award typifies that.

Former Most Beautiful Girl in Nige-ria, Nike Oshinowo brings on classic fashion to the red carpet. Her styles are timeless and this perhaps accounts for why she is still relevant in the fashion and beauty industry years after winning the MBGN crown. She typifies the maxim less is more. Always simply put together but tastefully. Her fashion is not only endearing but enduring.

The woman’s hair it is said is her crowning glory. Musician, Sheyi Shay seems to know this too well and does everything to adorn a great hairstyle when she appears on the red carpet. Full bouncy hair is her favourite and she never disappoints.

The Fashion Protégé, a Nigerian reality television series, an initiative of BellaNaija and Glam Networks,

was created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of MultiChoice Nigeria. The television series which lasted for four weeks featured twelve young, up and coming designers who battled to be the first ever Fashion Protégé in Nigeria. The programme was also created to contribute to the development of the fashion industry in Nigeria.

After five weeks of rigorous tasks and challenges, Omon of Belois Couture emerged winner. The judges consisting of top designers, Mai Atafo and Lanre Da Silva, alongside guest judges also chose Bisola of Lady Biba as the first runner up.

Omon, an Economics and Statistics graduate, proved that beauty and brains isn’t far fetched as she walked away with an international fashion trip to the Vodafone Fashion Weekend sponsored by the British Council. In this interview, she relieves her experience.

- The Fashion Protégé

When did you know you wanted to be a fashion designer?

I never really thought of fashion designing as a full time career. However, during my NYSC year, I worked as a banker and couldn’t find happiness in the job. I found that I would always gravitate towards my late night sewing for satisfaction. So, after my NYSC, I decided to do what makes me happy.

Why did you enter the Fashion Protege competition?

A friend drew my attention to the advert on a popular blog and I thought to try and see what I could learn from the experience. It also came at a time when I really wanted a mentor. So, I entered the competition to learn, especially from the mentors and also to show the world my designs.

How did you find the Fashion Protege experience?

MultiChoice Nigeria’s sponsorship of the Fashion Protégé was awesome. Every single step/challenge was a learning experience and a great opportunity to meet other emerging designers; identify with them, their passion, creativity, ambition and hopefully build our brands together. It was also great to learn from industry professionals who run established brands.

The fashion seminar/lecture series by the British Council was the highlight of the journey for me; a real eye opener and I am better off for it. It set me on the right path of making money from my passion.

What was the toughest challenge you were faced with during the show?

It was not easy going out of my perceived comfort zone as a designer to create designs that the judges would like, and most importantly the customer. Also, I had to learn to stick to a process because every challenge had a specific time frame! Being a last minute kind of person, I had to buckle up during the

competition because I learned that a clearly cut out plan will produce a really beautiful result.

You grew exponentially during the Fashion Protege? What about the show facilitated that growth?

DNot many people are lucky enough to have access to mentors such as Mai Atafo, Lanre Da Silva-Ajayi, the amazing Bola Balogun of Glam Networks, who handled production, the MultiChoice team and also have business lectures by the British Council Fashion Consultant.

I am really thankful to MultiChoice Nigeria for the opportunity. There was something new to learn everyday and I definitely didn’t go back home the same! I took all the challenges seriously and everything the judges had to say was taken as gospel – whether criticism, advice or praise. Based on all that, I have a new outlook to life and my business.

How was it like preparing for the finale and then showcasing your collection to the judges?

It was the most challenging part of the competition because it came down to the wire. Nobody would like to get all the way to finale and still not win. I had to harness all that I had learned and still let my aesthetics show. It was a rebirth for me and Belois Couture because all I could see was a new born and refined Belois that was on the way to becoming an internationally recognisable brand. I had to use all the lessons learnt from the interactions, classes and challenges.

Showcasing was a different ball game entirely. When my fabrication was put on the chopping block, I felt really sad because, honestly the feedback from the judges was gospel to me. However, in all of this I never forgot to talk to God to make sure my decisions and designs were endorsed by Him.

What role did the show’s mentors

play in your journey to the finale? Both mentors were unequivocally

awesome and I am grateful to them. Lanre Da Silva-Ajayi was explicit in teaching us about the importance of the consumers of our products; because without anyone wearing your designs, you really are not a designer. She impressed on us the need to match customers’ need with our aesthetics.

Mai Atafo was your mentor. How did he help or influence your work?

Mai Atafo is an amazing fashion designer whom I would rather call a fashion entrepreneur. Having passion is good, but having creative passion that creates demand and even pays the bills is bliss! This is what Mai taught me. He opened my eyes to making my passion a viable source of income and not crashing out of the industry as an emerging brand. The major point I learnt from him was that having an eager

market to buy your designs is as important as creating those designs and understanding the diversity and uniqueness of the fashion industry. This greatly influenced my final collection. Mai also taught me to always look my best and to ‘chin up’. I remember that while on set for the look book challenge, I had taken off my heels and was wearing flats (they didn’t match my outfit). He said to me: “Omon, where are your shoes? Oya go and put them on.” He was a like a big brother to all of us.

Was there a point during the journey you thought to yourself: ‘I might win this’?

Funny thing is, I never focused on winning. Even with votes of confidence from friends and family, all I wanted was to come and milk the mentors of their fashion knowledge as well as use the opportunity to put Belois on a wider stage because the show was to be aired on DSTV, after all. So, winning is a completely appreciated bonus.

What was the best advice you got from the mentors?

The customer is as important as your beautiful design. Chin up and make them drool and want your designs every time.

You won the styling challenge. Take us through the process preparing for the challenge and what it felt like to finally win a challenge?

Standing out in a beautiful way is what Belois Couture is all about. So, I thought every piece of the outfit, from the fabric to the design and the accessories, had to represent my idea of an urban woman with standards and values.

The stakes became higher when we found out that we had a celebrity guest judge. I was nervous because I was yet to have any celebrity see my designs. Then winning the challenge was ecstatic because not only did one of my favourite actresses endorse my design, I was going to get the opportunity to dress her. I love everything about Stephanie Linus and her journey in Nollywood represents what I believe in.

What did you learn about yourself during Fashion Protege?

I learned that I can actually be a patient person and that I have the ability to control how I react to unpleasant situations.

Did you learn anything from your fellow contestants?

All the contestants were beautiful designers and wonderful people. However, two left a lasting impression on me. Tobi from whom I picked the air bubble/cloud nine personality because she was always in high spirits and never allowed the pressure get to her and Bisola who was very focused. She has the ability to keep her eyes on the prize at all times. There was also a lot I learned from interacting with the other contestants. The experience was well worth it.

Tell us about your brand, Belois Couture?Belois Couture is a fashion label founded by

Oisetohanmen Isinugben in 2012. It has a very deep passion for fashion and is committed to serving the modern day woman with excellence in fashion and clothing.

How would you describe your design aesthetics?Belois Couture is a lifestyle clothing brand that

offers a wide range of beautifully urban, afro-centric tailored pieces. (It’s about beauty and class) and inspired by timeless and glamorous women. These pieces reflect elegance, originality, youth, confidence, elegance of the 1920s and 1950s as well as influenced by the elegance, youthfulness and versatility of the 70s and 80s. The brand is clothing women of every age.

Who is your dream celebrity client?By virtue of winning the styling challenge, I get to

dress actress Stephanie Okereke-Linus. I would also

REPORTAGE

love to dress Tiwa Savage. I think she has an amazing body and is daring and free spirited enough to make any design look fabulous.

What’s the inspiration behind the look book collection?

The look book collection is a representation of my “exponential growth” during the show. I thought of the life of a woman and how she evolves with each stage; from infant to toddler to teenager to adulthood. At every stage, she becomes better as she appreciates her femininity and that is what I tried to show with every piece in the look book. This embodies what I was at the Fashion Protege.

What’s next for Belois Couture?Belois Couture has been given a very wonderful

platform to become a global brand which is our vision. However, our mission is to first deliver excellence in clothing and fashion.

How’s life and business after Fashion Protege?I feel empowered with all the tools from the

interactions, seminars, challenges and lessons from Fashion Protege and we are fast becoming a well placed fashion business. Structures necessary to boost design excellence, business growth and development as well as have international presence are being put in place. Business has also been better.

What plans do you have for the prize money?First, I will pay my tithe and then invest the rest into

building and making Belois Couture a better brand.

Corns over toes can be a highly irritating and painful situation for anyone. A Corn is a specially shaped callus of dead skin that usually occurs on thin skin surfaces, especially on the dorsal surface of toes or fingers.

Corns are practically nothing but protective responses regarding your skin layer due to both stress and friction above your current toes or foot. Calluses are usually the actual consequence of poorly fitting footwear as well as uncomfortable footwear put on for more than a long period of time leading to elevated strain on a specific part of your feet.

Although the actual problem is not the harmful or unsafe one, it may result in discomfort, pain as well as constrained movements. For treating calluses home remedy will be most beneficial except if you happen to be experiencing severe soreness and want surgical intervention. Corns have got the unsightly appearance as well as may seem as red, swollen regions of skin. You would also have to say goodbye to open thong sandals, which can be a shame.

Diet Regarding CornsThere is absolutely no certain diet that assists in the treatment of calluses. However health dietary practices will almost always be beneficial as they will assist the body to repair alone along with proper healing. Right here are a few important

dietary ideas. Your daily diet is also essential through the aspect of maintaining the best body weight. This is due to the simple purpose which corns and calluses are likely to develop through recurring excessive pressure as well as scrubbing in a specific place. Obesity greatly raises how much pressure that regions such as the soles of the actual feet or toes are usually put through. To this level creating modifications to your diet regime can greatly aid you in dealing with the problem.

Suggestions You’ll find special medicated shields along with liquids available in pharmacies which help in order to decrease discomfort and eliminate corns.

Remedies for CallusesEven though calluses do not necessarily pose much of your problem corns, since their funnel like composition

heighten and focus force on a particular point, thus not just causing pain, but furthermore poses a threat regarding tissue damage as well as ulceration. While there are do-it-yourself solutions that some claim will help in the remedy associated with corns, most experts agree that treatment is actually not as simple as this may appear, and prevention is actually in fact a lot easier. Besides treatment with around the actual counter applications along with sanding with any pumice stone, you could in addition use some of these kinds of do-it-yourself solutions:• Since corns as well as calluses are composed regarding dead skin, massaging the location with a pumice stone is extremely effective. Bear in mind to soak your feet in warm water first.• Soaking the impacted feet in a solution involving baking soda and also hot water is said to be effective in removing the particular dead hard skin. Put three tablespoons of the baking soda to a tub of warm water and then place your foot in. • Dab a few cornstarch in the areas involving the toes to eliminate moisture. The toes need to be placed dry because wetness can cause infection and intensify the corn or callosity. Corn flour helps to soak up sweat and hence maintains your skin dry.

Get Rid Of Feet Corn & Calluses Fast!

• Vinegar is useful when you are treating corns. Caress a good amount of vinegar over the actual affected regions using a cotton ball. Leave it on overnight and scrub the area the next morning.• Pineapple peel contains certain enzymes which help out with softening corns as well as calluses. Position a small part of fresh pineapple peel over the affected area and cover with a clean towel. Do this every night for a week. TERI’S FAVE TIP: Another great trick I always use is Aloe Vera and crushed phensic aspirin tablets (or salicylic acid found in all aspirin) place the mixture on the corn and when it dries leave on overnight, do this for 2 weeks have a 1 week break and start again. After 6 weeks you will see a significant improvement.

Preventative actions• Corns emerge as a result of continuous pressure and friction. Therefore it can be crucial that you identify the cause and also eliminate it before the trouble gets aggravated. Change your shoes!

• Keep your toenails short. When the toenails are long, the toe joint may push upwards in opposition to the actual shoe and produce a corn. Trim the toenails straight across.

• If you sense a corn developing, bathe the foot in warm water and Epsom salts. And then apply moisturizer to the spot and cover the feet with a plastic-type bag. Take off your bag after an hour and use a pumice rock, stroke the corn gently. This will help to prevent the actual edible corn from further solidification.

• Apply petroleum jelly to areas of the feet in which tend to undertake friction. Do this especially when you need to do any lots of walking.

• Always buy shoes that fit correctly and also comfortably. It can be a good idea to go shoe searching in the later part of the afternoon as the feet tend to swell slightly due to pressure.

• Wash your feet daily and dry them well. You could also apply some talcum powder in between toes to remove excess sweat and moisture.

That’s it for today my readers! Hope you enjoyed this piece! Remember you read it here first!

WHEN YOU MARRY INTO A STRANGE FAMILY!Now they are married, and guess what? He has continued to be into other women like he always has, and so marriage did not stop that. He is so disconnected from his children, and wants nothing to do with them, I guess an aftermath of being disconnected from members of his own father’s house and thinking starting his own family may put an end to the void that comes from BEING APART from a home. Always thinking less of his wife, and not being able to complement her for anything, which I believe is as a result of not thinking much of himself too, and not being able to overcome within himself the shame from his father’s house that has stuck to him like a Siamese twin.

At this point I only asked her a question, “WHY DIDN’T YOU TALK TO A QUALIFIED COUNSELOR”? Because I believe if she has, there is a probability that she wouldn’t be in the mess she finds herself today. She is in a situation where every

breakthrough she seemed to get in life is FRAMED in dishonor. It’s like a case of having Blessings with sorrow added to it. She has what a lot of women are seeking for, and even lives in a part of the world that any ambitious woman will want to stay, because of the opportunities there, but finds it difficult to count

Get Captivatedher blessings and name them one by one, because her mistakes seem to be over growing and chocking her miracles. In a land of plenty, she becomes lean, and in an environment filled with Joy, she lives with endless sadness. As for the man she is married to, he doesn’t know the difference, and doesn’t believe he needs help either, he just lives with wife and children like he is the STRANGER that he is.

Now that’s what happens when you marry someone, Male or Female from a strange house, he may never become a friend, but remains a STRANGER bringing strange things into your life and destiny. It’s even sadder these days when a girl meets a guy for 3 days and already tells you in counseling that she is so much in love with him, which is what you get in a loveless society, where any little show of so called affection sweeps the inexperienced girl off her feet.

I am still counseling with this lady, and believe she needs a separation from this stranger, and by the way, the stranger rapes her now when she says no to sex, because she is afraid he may infect her with an STD. Thank God they live in a Country where he can be arrested and jailed unlike OUR AFRICA where men believe they can do whatever they want to women and get away with it, until the women in Africa know and stand up for their rights that their Governments will be forced to acknowledge.

Parents use to INVESTIGATE the Family their children want to marry into in those days, but it is not done anymore. Please before you get married to someone, if you are not comfortable with what you see because it is glaring within his or her family, kindly postpone wedding plans and seek God who REVERSES every irreversible to come and intervene in the life of your partner, or call off the wedding plans and run, run, run.

Do you dine out often? If so, be careful. Most restaurants stay in business by serving big potions of tasty food.unfortunatly, most restaurant food is high in calories, sugar, and fat. You will probably eat healthier meals if you prepare those meals at home instead of eating out.

Apple An apple a day can keep weight gain at bay. People who chomped an apple before a rice meal ate fewer calories overall than those who had a different snack. Plus, the antioxidants in apples may help prevent metabolic syndrome, a condition marked by excess belly fat or an “apple shape.”.

Oats All oats are healthful, but the steel-cut and rolled varieties (which are minimally processed) have up to 5 grams of fiber per serving, making them the most filling choice. Instant oats contain 3 to 4 grams per serving. Oats are good for breakfast or dinner.

Goji Berries These chewy, tart berries have a hunger-curbing edge over other fruit: 18 amino acids, which make them a surprising source of protein. Snack on them

The food we eat affects us physically, mentally and emotionally. We all have different food needs. Almond Butter Adding this spread may lower bread’s glycemic index (a measure of a food’s effect on blood sugar). A study from the University of Toronto found that people who ate almonds with white bread didn’t experience the same blood sugar surges as those who ate only the slice.

Wild Salmon Not only do fish fats keep your heart healthy, but they shrink your waist, too. Omega-3 fatty acids improve insulin sensitivity—which helps

build muscle and decrease belly fat. And the more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns. Opt for wild salmon; it may contain fewer pollutants.

Chiles or cayenne pepper One reason to spice up your meals: You’ll crank up your metabolism. A compound in chilies called

capsaicin has a thermogenic effect, meaning it causes the body to burn extra calories for 20 minutes after you eat the chilies. Try body perfect healing and cleansing cocktail.

Yoghurt Dietitians often refer to plain yogurt as the perfect food, and for good reason: it can stave off hunger by keeping blood sugar levels steady.Eat more Use low fat plain yogurt instead of mayonnaise in chicken or potato salad, or top a baked potato with a bit of yogurt and a squeeze of lemon juice. You’ll save 4.7 grams of fat per tablespoon. Look for plain yogurt, which has more protein than other version.

Sardines These tiny fish are the unsung stars of the sea. They are high in protein and loaded with omega-3s, which also help the body maintain muscle. And they’re low in mercury and high in calcium, making them a smart fish pick for pregnant women.

Avocado Don’t let the fat content of an avocado (29 grams) scare you—that’s what makes it a top weight loss food. The heart-healthy monounsaturated fat it contains increases satiety. And it’s terrific party food.Eat more Add avocado to your sandwich instead of butter for a creamy texture and a shot of flavor. Avocados do contain a lot of calories, so it’s best to watch your portions.

I am pleased to announce that we have a guest contributor, Kehinde Adewole, a branding and marketing expert with over 15 years’ experience in multinationals both locally and internationally. She is also the creative director of an affordable fashion label called All About Prints. She would be providing us brand building tips for entrepreneurs or aspiring entrepreneurs.“A lot of people talk about it. Yet very few people understand it. Even fewer know how to manage it, including the leadership team. Still everyone wants it. What is it? Branding, of course - arguably the most powerful tool since the spreadsheet.”To build a successful brand, one must connect the rational and the emotional, the theoretical and the practical, the logical and the magical to create a sustainable competitive advantage. Brand experts remind us that the ultimate moment of truth for all brands is the customer experience. Brand owners and stakeholders must realize that the “customer perceptions trump our own perceptions.”

The morale of the above is plain and simply what branding is all about. Companies or brand owners don’t define a brand; the consumer experience is what a brand is all about.

What a brand isn’tLet me start by telling you what a brand isn’t. A brand is not a logo (Nike), a corporate identity system (trademarks), nor is it the product (Louboutin, Coca-Cola Bottle, Guinness or any of your favorite brands.) In fifteen years of managing brands, marketing professionals talk about managing our brands, but what we usually mean is managing our products, or sales, distribution, and quality thereof..

What a brand isTo manage a brand means to manage something much less tangible. A brand is an aura, an invisible layer of meaning that surrounds the product. A brand is a person’s gut feeling about a product, service, or a company. It’s a GUT FEELING, because in the end the brand is defined by individuals aka “Consumers, Shoppers, & Customers,” not by companies, markets, or the

so-called general public. Each person creates his or her own version of it. While companies can’t control the process, they can influence it by communicating the qualities that makes this product different than that product. When enough individuals arrive at the same GUT FEELING, a

company can proudly say they have a brand. In other words, a brand is not What YOU say it is, it’s What THEY say it is.

I hope the above clarifies what a brand is and isn’t? To compare a brand with its competitors, we need to know what makes it different. Brand management is the management of difference, not as they exist on data sheets but as they exist in the minds of people. The ideas of brands have been around for decades but because our culture and economy has moved from an economy of mass production to an economy of mass customization, our purchasing choices have multiplied.

In today’s society, our choices are based on symbolic attributes. What does the product look like? Where is it being sold? What kinds of people are buying it? And finally who makes it? I love my favorite brands because of the degree I feel towards the products or service, rather than the assessment of its features and benefits. This determines whether I buy my favorite brands or its competition.Five discipline of Brand-Building includes following steps:1. Differentiating your band2. Collaborating your brand3. Innovating your brand4. Validating your research & key findings5. Cultivating your brand. Each of these steps is relative to key successes of some existing brands today. Customer experience should be the end result of any brand owner who wishes to remain a Brand. Any brand can be charismatic and even yours. The strategy and creative team must work together to build charismatic brand such as Google, Nike, Amazon, Nordstrom, and many more.

In conclusion, it is important to remain focused when differentiating your brand. Like building a cathedral, building a brand is a collaborative project.
