WelcomeWelcome to the 2013 All Star Salute to celebrate The Brigadier General James B. Thayer Oregon Military Museum, which will commemorate Oregon’s military heritage: past, present, and future. Last year’s event kicked off our capital campaign, and thanks to

our many supporters we have reached $2.1 million of our $6.5 million campaign goal.

Our vision for creating a world-class museum is becoming a reality. Construction to renovate the Oregon Military Heritage park has begun. Education will remain at the forefront of the Museum’s purpose, with students and visitors becoming aware of Oregon’s rich military history in local, national, and world events.

Generously giving to these efforts will create a legacy for all Oregonians to enjoy for future generations. We have a great start, but a long way to go. Your partnership is appreciated!

Honoring Oregon’s Military History

The $6.5 million Brigadier General James B. Thayer Oregon Military Museum will celebrate and commemorate Oregon’s military heritage: its past, present, and future. Every service branch will be included: Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, and Merchant Marine.

For generations, hundreds of thousands of Oregonians have served their country at home and abroad. Many sacrificed their lives in defense of liberty and freedom while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Persian Gulf War, Vietnam, Korea, World Wars I and II, the Spanish-American War, the Civil War, the Indian Wars, and many more. Their legacy continues.

This project will transform the 32,000 square-foot Clackamas Armory and grounds into a world-class museum that will be the centerpiece of the Oregon Military Heritage Park at Camp Withycombe, home of the new 41st Infantry Division Armed Forces Reserve Center. It will become a major Pacific Northwest attraction and gateway to other historic military sites in Oregon.

Retired Brigadier General James B. Thayer The Brigadier General James B. Thayer Oregon Military Museum is named for one of Oregon’s finest military and civic leaders. James Thayer joined the U.S. Army in 1942 as a young man, earning the prestigious Silver and Bronze Stars for his combat heroics in Europe during World War II. 2nd Lieutenant Thayer’s 16-man, anti-tank mine platoon discovered and liberated the Nazi death camp, Gunskirchen Lager near Wels, Austria, saving the lives of over 15,000 Hungarian Jewish refugees. It’s a memory that he has never forgotten, and one that has driven his commitment to honor his fellow service men and women who have served our country.

“General Thayer’s name on this Museum is to honor what is the past but also build on what is the future. He is a person who understands both the horrors and the triumphs of war. He is the personification of the citizen soldier.”

—Victor G. Atiyeh, Governor of Oregon (1979-1987)

A Pilot’s StoryThe Oregon Air Guard in Korea

The brand new Oregon Air Guard was put into action when nine pilots from the 123rd Fighter Squadron based in Portland, Oregon were activated to fly missions in the Korean War. Ernie Wakehouse was one of those pilots. Ernie Wakehouse flew 100 missions in a F-51, sometimes flying three and four missions in a day bombing and strafing the enemy. One particular mission happened on November 18, 1951. He led his flight in a series of devastating attacks using napalm rockets and machine guns on enemy troops, troop bunkers, and supplies near Songdong-ni, Korea. Despite the poor visibility and opposition, Wakehouse pressed the attacks onward, and left the area only after all ordnance had been expended. Lt. Wakehouse returned his flight home safely. Those attacks resulted in major enemy casualties, destroyed enemy bunkers, and severely hampered the enemy’s operations in the area. Lt. Ernie Wakehouse received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his courageous efforts.

Bill Schonely is a Portland sports legend and symbol of the love affair Portland basketball fans have with the Trail Blazers. As play-by-play announcer for 2,522 Trail Blazers telecasts, The Schonz created and coined the famous phrase “Rip City!” which became synonymous with Blazers basketball, and even became a nickname for Portland itself. In 2012, Bill Schonely was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Governor Victor Atiyeh served as Oregon’s 32nd Governor from 1979 to 1987. His willingness to reach across party lines to pass important legislation made a huge impact on Oregon’s economy, attracting new industries to the state and bringing thousands of jobs to Oregon. A long supporter of Oregon Veterans, Vic Atiyeh first dreamed of rebuilding the Oregon Military Museum while in office and is excited to see that dream become a reality nearly a quarter of a century later. Atiyeh currently serves as a Trustee Emeritus at Pacific University where he received an honorary doctorate degree in 1996.

Governor Ted Kulongoski is a passionate supporter of Oregon Veterans. During his eight years as Governor, he attended almost every mobilization and demobilization ceremony for Oregon National Guardsmen and comforted families and friends at nearly every funeral of those who did not make it home. A former Marine, Kulongoski has the heart of a Veteran. During his time as Governor, from 2003 to 2011, he became known as the “soldier’s Governor,” supporting legislation to help Veterans readjust to civilian life and find jobs. In 2012, Kulongoski joined the faculty at Portland State University in the school’s Mark O. Hatfield School of Government.

Tonight we honor and induct four Korean War Veterans.

LOREN R. KAUFMAN recipient ofTHE CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL OF HONORLoren Kaufman served with Company G, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division during the Korean War. On September 4-5, 1950, Kaufman distinguished himself by gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty at Yongsan, Korea. While trying to reinforce

Company G, his platoon was attacked by an enemy battalion. Kaufman engaged the enemy repeatedly in hand-to-hand combat and with rifle and grenade assaults. His first quick vicious attack so surprised the enemy that they retreated in confusion. In subsequent attacks while his Company was pinned down, he charged the enemy line without hesitation. Following this, he led another assault, destroying a machine gun position. Then, pursuing the hostile troops, he bayoneted two more, and rushed a mortar position, shooting the gunners. When the enemy fled, Kaufman led a patrol into the nearby town and dispersed them.

Kaufman was killed in action on February 10, 1951, before being awarded the Medal of Honor.

MINEO INUZUKA recipient ofTHE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSSMineo Inuzuka was recognized for his heroic actions of May 27, 1951 near Chango-ri, Korea, while serving with Company F, 17th Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division.Within six hundred yards of the objective and under intense enemy automatic weapons fire, Inuzuka moved forward alone, located the camouflaged positions of

enemy machine-gun emplacements, and adjusted mortar fire on them. Then disregarding his own safety, Inuzuka moved among his platoon members to point out individual routes of attack, successfully inspiring a spontaneous assault that secured the objective.

Inuzuka served in World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam. He was originally drafted into the U.S. Army on June 21, 1944, while being held as a Japanese-American internee at the Minidoka Relocation Camp in Idaho.

HERBERT B. POWELL recipient ofTHE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSSHerbert Powell was the Commander of the 17th Infantry Regimental Combat Team, 7th Infantry Division, the only U.S. unit to reach the Yalu River on China’s border during the Korean War. Colonel Powell distinguished himself by his extraordinary heroism in action while near Pung-san, Korea, from November 1-21, 1950. Powell

fearlessly and repeatedly went forward in the face of devastating hostile fire, repulsed a major attack, and directed the fire that dislodged the enemy. Later, while suffering a severe leg injury, he continued close personal liaison with forward echelons. He fearlessly traveled hundreds of miles in rugged terrain despite enemy sniper fire, and successfully directed the patrolling and reorganization needed for the major attack across the Ungi River.

KENNETH L. REUSSER recipient ofTHE NAVY CROSSKenneth L. Reusser was the first Korean War Marine Aviator decorated for gallantry. He served with Marine Fighter Squadron VMF-214, known as the “Black Sheep” Squadron, attached to the USS Sicily. On August 5, 1950, Reusser led four Vought F4U Corsairs on a low level attack in the Inchon Area. Sustaining heavy damage to

his aircraft, he returned to the ship for repairs and rearmament. Despite more heavy ground fire, he made his way back, destroying an oil storage facility. With only his 20mm gun left, Reusser then successfully exploded a camouflaged oil tanker, almost blowing himself out of the air.

Reusser flew a total of 253 combat missions in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, earning 56 medals, including the Navy Cross with one Gold Star and the Purple Heart with three Gold Stars. He is the only aviator to survive being shot down in all three wars—five times in all.

#12. “TRIBUTE TO PAT TILLMAN” BY RENOWNED ARTIST, SCOTTY MEDLOCK

“You can now own and treasure your very own commemorative painting featuring an American Hero, Pat Tillman.” —Scotty Medlock

In 2002, Pat Tillman proudly put his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals on hold to serve his country. This decision was just one of many he made over the course of his lifetime to help and serve a cause greater than his own self-interest. Following Pat’s death in 2004, while serving with the U.S. Army’s 75th Ranger Regiment in Afghanistan, his family and friends established the Pat Tillman Foundation.

About The Artist:Scotty Medlock is widely acclaimed for his unique ability to express an emotion by capturing a moment in time. His keen sense of observation draws him to the subtle rather than the obvious. Recently, he has concentrated on the world of golf and has teamed up with golf legends Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus. While Scotty continues to mesmerize millions of fans worldwide with a paint brush, he truly believes ….“He’s only as good as his next painting.”
