“The Bridge at Dolceacqua” is the first work by Claude Monet “to cross the threshold,” said NYSHA President Paul D’Ambrosio. “And it’s a superb Monet,” providing a basis to judge the offerings in “American Impressionism: Paintings of Light and Life,” at The Fenimore Art Museum this summer.

Lauren is the author of The Monsters of Templeton and Delicate Edible Birds.Arcadia:In the fields and forests of western New York State in the late 1960’s, several dozen idealists set out to live off ther land, founding what becomes a famous commune centered on the grounds of a decaying mansion called Arcadia House. Arcadia follows this lyrical, rollicking, tragic and exquisite utopian dream from its hopeful start through its heyday and beyond.

“Richly peopled and ambitious and oh, so lovely, Lauren Groff’s Arcadia is one of the most moving and satisfying novelos I’ve read

in a long time. It’s not possible to write any better without showing off.” - RICHARD RUSSO, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of EMPIRE FALLS.

MONET/From B1typical. “America’s Rome: Artists In The Eternal City,” featuring the Hudson School’s Thomas Cole and George Innes, had gotten good reviews and atten-dance was up at the former Fenimore House on Otsego Lake.

Then, Holland Cotter, the

Pulitzer-winning New York Times art critic who sum-mers up here, visited, and his Aug. 13, 2009, review, “With Palettes in Hand, Confronting an Italy of Glory and Decay,” domi-nated that Thursday’s Arts front.

Cotter called “America’s Rome” an “ideal comple-

ment” to the recently opened American Wing at the Metropolitan Museum. But he continued, “Where the Met lets its sculptures just stand around looking pretty, or goofy, or ghastly, the Fenimore show takes a serious, investigative look at the pictures it has brought together.”

Immediately, “the at-tendance just shot up, and it hasn’t gone down,” said D’Ambrosio the other day in a interview to discuss the centerpiece, “American Impressionism: Paintings of Light and Life,” and the rest of this year’s NYSHA offerings.

The Fenimore followed

up in 2010 with “John Singer Sargent: Portraits in Praise of Women,” and in 2011 with “Prendergast to Pollock: American Modern-ism,” featuring Pollock’s “Number 34, 1949,” plus an Edward Hopper exhibit.

“I had no idea we would beat Sargent with Hopper,” said D’Ambrosio, but so it was.

This year’s exhibit fea-tures several works from the Florence Griswold Museum in Old Lyme, Conn., called the “American Giverny” after Claude Monet’s home and garden in France’s Seine Valley. Also, the Arkell Museum in Canajo-harie loaned “12 very great American pieces.”

The NYSHA exhibit will feature such Americans as Childe Hassam, Mary Cas-satt and Willard Metcalf, but the Monet original, “The Bridge at Dolce Acqua,” will set the standard by which to judge Impression-ism’s American disciples. “We’ve never had a Monet cross the threshold,” said D’Ambrosio. “And it’s a superb Monet.”

No less impressive is “To Great Acclaim: Homecom-ing of the Thaw Collection of American Art,” from a national tour that included museums in Cleveland, Minneapolis and Dallas. That tour, D’Ambrosio said, gave him many of the contacts he was able to ap-proach in putting together “American Impressionism.” “These works are very hard to borrow,” he said. “They

are in great demand.”The eight other exhibits

– NYSHA’s most extensive and varied offerings in a single season to date – range from Civil War photogra-phy, to William Matthew Prior’s primitive portraits, many of former slaves, to an expanded collaboration with The Glimmerglass Opera, aka Festival.

Two exhibits, “Heavenly Aida” – costumes designed for Leontyne Price and oth-ers who performed Verdi’s “Aida” – and “Spellbound” – costumes, jewelry and drawings from Met produc-tions – pick up where a Hopper exhibit/”Later That Same Evening” opera com-bination left off in 2011.

When Pavorotti’s brown-and-gold costume from the Met’s “Aida” was unpacked, Fenimore curators made a discovery – “a little Italian horn, a good luck charm” – in one of the pockets. It will be displayed alongside the costume, and the Met curators were delighted by their counterparts’ find.

For D’Ambrosio, the opera collaboration captures the NYSHA museums’ special charm. Visitors can take in “Heavenly Aida” in the morning, lunch on the veranda (or in town), then catch the matinee at Glim-merglass in the afternoon. “It’s a perfect day,” he said.

Because of that way of thinking, the Fenimore has “momentum,” D’Ambrosio agrees. “But when you have it,” he added, “you have to keep it.”

COUNTY COURT, OTSEGO COUNTY

PETITION AND NOTICE OF

FORECLOSURE

INDEX #: 20101284

In the Matter of the Foreclosure of Tax Liens by Proceeding in Rem pursuant to Article Eleven of the Real Prop-erty Tax Law by Otsego County.

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that on the 26th day of Jan, 2012 the Otsego County Treasurer, herein-after the “Enforc-ing Officer” of Otsego County hereinafter “Tax District” pursu-ant to law, filed with the Otsego County Clerk a PETITION AND NOTICE OF FORECLO-SURE against various parcels of real property for unpaid taxes.

The above cap-tioned proceeding is hereby com-menced to en-force the payment of delinquent tax-es or other lawful charges which have accumulated and become liens against certain property. The parcels to which this proceed-ing applies are identified on Schedule “A” of this Petition, which is annexed hereto and made a part hereof. This document serves both as a Petition of Foreclosure and a Notice of Foreclosure for purposes of this proceeding.

Effect of filing: All persons hav-ing or claiming to have an interest in the real prop-erty described in this petition are hereby notified that the filing of this petition con-stitutes the com-mencement by the Tax District of a proceeding in the court specified in the caption above to foreclose each of the tax liens therein described by a foreclosure proceeding in rem.

Nature of pro-ceeding: This proceeding is brought against the real prop-erty only and is to foreclose the tax liens described in this petition. No personal judge-ment will be entered herein for such taxes or other legal charges or any part thereof.

Persons affected: This notice is directed to all persons own-ing or having or claiming to have an interest in the real property described in this petition. Such persons are here-by notified further that a duplicate of this petition has been filed in the Office of the County Treasurer and will remain open for public inspection up to and including the date specified as the last day for redemption.

Right of redemp-tion: Any person having or claim-ing to have an interest in any such real prop-erty and the legal right thereto may on or before said date redeem the same by paying the amount of all such unpaid tax liens thereon, in-cluding all inter-est and penalties and other legal charges which are included in the lien against such real property, computed to and including the date of redemption. Such payment shall be made to Dan Crowell, Otsego County Treasurer, 197 Main Street, P.O. Box 265, Coo-perstown, N.Y. 13326. In the event that such taxes are paid by a person other than the record owner of such real property, the person so paying shall be entitled to have the tax liens affected thereby satisfied of record.

Last day for redemption: The last day for redemption is hereby fixed as the 30th day of April, 2012. Service of answer: Every person having any right, title or interest in or lien upon any parcel of real property described in this petition may serve a duly veri-fied answer upon the Attorney for the Tax District setting forth in detail the nature and amount of his or her interest and any defense or objection to the foreclosure. Such answer must be filed in the Office of the County Clerk and served upon the Attorney for the Tax District on

or before the date above mentioned as the last day for redemption.

Failure to redeem or answer: In the event of failure to redeem or answer by any person having the right to redeem or an-swer, such person shall be forever barred and fore-closed of all his or her right, title and interest and equity of redemp-tion in and to the parcel described in this petition and a judgement in foreclosure may be taken by default.

NEWBURGH – Word has been received that Ellen Louise Haiston Rockwell, 93, died on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, in St Luke’s-Corn-wall Hospital in Newburgh.

Ms. Haiston was born on Sept. 4, 1918, in Tyrone, Pa. She grew up in Pottstown, Pa., where her father, Frank Haiston, was the superin-tendent of schools and her mother, Elizabeth Kriner, was an elementary school teacher. Her younger sister, Mary Alice Fronheiser, and older brother Frank prede-ceased her. She received her

bachelor’s in Art Education at Edinboro State teacher’s college where she met and

married Rich-ard Waring Rockwell in 1942. During World War II, she vol-unteered for the Red Cross until her first child, Jane,

was born in 1944. When her husband returned from the war, the family moved to Brooklyn, where he contin-ued his education at Pratt

Institute under the GI bill. In 1951 the family moved to New City.

She helped found the Collaberg School in Stony Point, where she taught art and kindergarten for many years. She divorced in 1962 and, after her children were grown, she moved to California in 1973 where she was a member of the Synanon Community for 18 years, working as a graphic artist.

For 18 years she lived in Edmeston and Cooper-stown, and worked for the

Otsego County Office of Aging where she was the editor of the newsletter. In September 2009, she was forced to retire at age 91 after losing her eyesight. However, she continued to do volunteer work at Bassett Hospital until she moved to Cornwall in November 2010 to be closer to her children.

Despite visual impair-ment and aging, she contin-ued to exercise daily and en-joy life. She enjoyed good food, ice cream, cappucci-nos at 2 Alice’s Restaurant in Cornwall, audio books,

public radio and most of all - visits from her children and good friends.

She is survived by her four children, Jane Jaffe of New York City, Nicholas Rockwell of Fort Mont-gomery, Andrew Rockwell of Ringwood, N.J., and Jessica Rockwell of New Gloucester, Maine, and six grandchildren: Jason Claiborne, Chris Rockwell, Jed Rockwell, Nicole, Alex and Eric Jederlinic, as well as two great-grandchildren, Kimberly Rose and Aiden Rockwell.

In addition to her parents, she is predeceased by her younger sister Mary Alice Fronheiser and older brother Frank.

In accordance with her wishes, a Celebration of Life gathering will be held in the spring of 2012 along with the spreading of her ashes over her favorite mountain top-view in Har-riman State Park. The date is yet to be determined. Her friends will be notified and asked to contribute any memorabilia they wish to share.

Ellen Louise Haiston Rockwell, 93, Edited County Office of the Aging Newsletter
