John Pampa lone Coach of The Yea rHead Coach Southern Regional. With a talented senior core and standoutunderclassmen 2013 was shaping up to be a big year for Southern Regional, and headcoach John Pampalone made sure his team understood what it was capable of.

"The expectations are huge, and we're not shying away from them," Pampalone toldAll Shore Media early in the season.

As the season progressed and Southern's undefeated record grew, so did thepressure. The Rams rarely faltered, however, and finished the season 18-2 with a pairof championships to set program records and continue to raise the bar for OceanCounty. For his efforts, Pampalone was recognized as Shore Conference BoysLacrosse Coach of the Year by the Shore Conference Lacrosse Coaches Association.

"It's an honor to be named Coach of the Year,"Pampalone said. "It was a great group of kids wholived up to expectations."The Rams began the season 14-0 including an epic 9-8 triple-overtime victory overJackson Memorial on April 13 that paved the way for their first Shore Conference ClassA South championship. Southern advanced to the Shore Conference Tournament

championship game for the first time in program history before falling to eventual champion Rumson-Fair Haven. TheRams bounced back with four straight victories to claim the NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV title and reach the Group IVchampionship game for the first time. Southern was stopped by eventual Tournament of Champions winner Ridge in theGroup IV final, but that couldn't put a damper on the greatest season in the history of Southern Lacrosse.

The Rams return goal-scoring machine Dylan Jinks, dynamic attackman Brendan Mullen, explosive midfielder ShawnMcManus, elite face-off specialist Billy Dowd and standout goalie Brendan Lefanto next season and should once again beamong the top teams in the Shore Conference.

Ranney'sbaseball team had just suffered a lop-sided loss to St. Rose in mid-Maywhen junior pitcher Steven Jacobsonreturned home to find a box waitingfor him that made the defeat seemlike a distant memory.Sitting inside the box was theculmination of four years ofhard work. While there areplenty of Shore Conferencebaseball players whoaccomplished impressive featsthis spring, only one can say hepublished his debut novel.

"I opened the box, and just tosee that cover with my name onit, flip the book over, see mypicture and words I've written,it was an incredible feeling,''Jacobson said.

On May 21, Jacobson, 17,released his first book, titled"One Last Season." Available onAmazon, BarnesandNoble.comand Books-A-Million, thefictional story revolves around43-year-old catcher FredDuvall, a one-time-great-turned-backup who takes overthe starting job due to an injury. The team's owner doesn't believe Duvall can last thefull season despite his hot start, so he trades for ayoung catcher to compete for the job. The new catcherhappens to be Duvall's estranged son, Cody, whomFred abandoned 20 years earlier when he opted for thelife of a professional baseball player.

"It took a long time, but it was worth it,'' Jacobsonsaid. "I've always had a very creative, imaginativemind and always like to lay my ideas down on paper.

It got tough just plowing through certain parts ofthe story because it follows the characters over two-thirds of a full Major League Baseball season."

The seeds of the novel weresewn when he was 13 years old in

2009, watching Redskins back-upquarterback Todd Collins enter thegame against his favorite team, the New York Giants. Theannouncers detailed the late-career comeback story of

Collins, who came off the benchin 2007 to lead the Redskins to threestraight wins and had remained as

Jason Campbell's backup for the next twoseasons. Jacobson's favorite sport was baseball, notfootball, but the story of Collins getting one last shotlate in his career germinated the idea for Jacobson, who has loved creative writing from a young age.

"I was thinking, what if a comeback like thathappened in baseball at catcher, the most grueling

position on the field,'' Jacobsonsaid. "Also, if the catcher is inhis 40s, he might have a sonwho could play Major LeagueBaseball, and that's what reallysparked the idea."

A project Jacobson thoughtwould take a few months in2010 ended up nearly takinguntil the end of his junior yearof high school to complete. Inbetween editing and finalizingthe book this spring, Jacobsonwas a pitcher/outfielder forRanney in the Panthers' firstyear playing in the Class BCentral division as a newly-minted member of the ShoreConference. He had largely keptthe book project under wrapsuntil his teammates discoveredit on Amazon.

"I'd always heard he lovedwriting,'' Ranney baseball coachBrian Dolan said. "He's sohumble, he never really came

out and told anybody about it. I think that's amazingfor an adult with a full-time job to do something likethis, but for a kid to do that is even more impressive. We got a copy delivered to the school, and I wasthumbing through it and said, 'This is amazing.'''

"I wouldn't say my teammates were surprised, because they know how much I love writing, but theywere impressed,'' Jacobson said.

Jacobson published the book through CreateSpace, acompany under the Amazon umbrella that provideswriters with the tools to self-publish and distributetheir work. Jacobson worked with a team atCreateSpace that put the book through two rounds ofprofessional editing, produced a bio and a pressrelease, and designed the front and back covers. Frombeginning to end, the project took from January of2010 to this past May, and he said it cost about $4,000in using CreateSpace to produce.

He wrote his book in the midst of a host of otherextracurricular activities, including playing baseballfor Ranney and for his offseason travel team, the NewJersey Marlins. He spent his winter and spring breaksduring this school year doing the final edits.

"It was definitely a really good learning process,'' hesaid. "I'm not terribly worried about how many copiesI'm going to sell. It's just nice to have my name inprint. It was a really detailed, really focused process."

Baseball fiction has long been a favorite ofJacobson, who lives in Colts Neck after growing up inFarmingdale. When his mother went to the gym at TheAtlantic Club in Manasquan, Jacobson would go to theWall Township Library and scan the shelves forbaseball books. New Jersey author Dan Gutman was aparticular favorite, along with books by New YorkDaily News sports columnist Mike Lupica and a 1940sseries about the Brooklyn Dodgers by former NewYorker writer John R. Tunis.

"I read a lot of baseball fiction,'' he said. "I used tolove to go to the library and peruse the sports fictionsections."

After becoming a published author, Jacobson planson doing some writing in college. However, he sees itmore as a side passion than his main focus.

"I don't want to grow up and be a writer,'' he said. "Ilike to have things to do, and if I was a writer and hadwriting block for a long time, I wouldn't have a lot todo."

While the book is mainly available online and viaorder through bookstores, Jacobson will also behaving a reading and talking about the book at 11 a.m.on July 13 at the Monmouth County Library branch inShrewsbury, where he is a volunteer. He has noimmediate plans to write another book, but there couldbe one down the line.

"There's a lot of stuff going on right now,'' he said."It took me three years to write this one, so it wouldprobably take a while to write another one. I've beenwriting short stories since I was eight years old, so fornow I'll work on them because they're quick and easy.As for another book, I will probably write one at somepoint in the future."
