THE COLLECT Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

THE LESSON

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Ecclesiasticus Chapter 44 beginning at the 1st verse

Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers in their generations. The Lord apportioned to them great glory, his majesty from the beginning. There were those who ruled in their kingdoms, and were men renowned for their power, giving counsel by their understanding, and proclaiming prophecies; leaders of the people in their deliberations and in understanding of learning for the people, wise in their words of instruction; those who composed musical tunes, and set forth verses in writing; rich men furnished with resources, living peaceably in their habitations -- all these were honoured in their generations, and were the glory of their times. There are some of them who have left a name, so that men declare their praise. I saw another angel ascend from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, saying, "Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God upon their foreheads." And I heard the number of the sealed, a hundred and forty-four thousand sealed, out of every tribe of the sons of Israel. After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no man could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen." Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time seeing the crowds, Jesus went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

As from Advent Sunday this year we will note two changes to the liturgy. These primarily will be in relation to the readings and they are significant enough for us to be aware of them.

From that day across the Diocese and furthermore the Province of the West Indies we will be using the Revised Common Lectionary.

The Revised Common Lectionary [RCL] is a three-year table of scripture readings and psalm citations for Christian worship on Sundays and festivals. Provision has also been made for a cycle of readings for Weekday Mass as well.

This means that the readings found in the current Book of Common Prayer (CPWI) will no longer be used. The new lectionary can be purchased or easily downloaded from the Internet, so that is not a major worry.

Lectionaries have been in use from as early as the fourth century. A lectionary is a collection of readings from the Scriptures, arranged and intended for proclamation during worship.

The RCL was actually in use from as far back as 1998 and was revised in 1992. A vast number of provinces and church communities are using this particular ordering of readings and so it was only a matter of time before we in the Province would have adopted it.

The other feature regarding the use of the RCL is that it is largely ecumenical and is used by the majority of denominations across the world.

The reading of the bible is central in our lives as Christians and as the ancient collect says, we must read, mark, learn and inwardly digest it, in order that we may have the power that comes from knowledge of God’s Word.

Another aspect of our liturgy of which we take note is that as from Advent Sunday rather than the

readings taken from the Revised Standard Version (RSV) of the biblical texts we will be using the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV).

The New Revised Standard Version of the Bible (NRSV) was published in 1989 and has received widest acclaim and broadest support from academics and church leaders.

According to biblegateway.com The NRSV differs from the RSV in four primary ways: • updating the language of the RSV, by replacing archaic forms of speech addressed to God (Thee, Thou, wast, dost, etc.), and by replacing words whose meaning has changed significantly since the RSV translation. • making the translation more accurate, • helping it to be more easily understood, especially when it is read out loud, and • making it clear where the original texts intend to include all humans, male and female, and where they intend to refer only to the male or female gender.

We pray that with these developments we may find our lives enriched and our loyalty to God almighty confirmed as we worship and serve our Lord and God

And bluntly asked, 'Where are you going?' It made me redefine my priorities, Teaching me that it really is the little things that make life sweet.

It gave me the vision to see angels walking among us- Calling themselves friends and family- Touching my life deeper than I ever dreamed possible.

Cancer asked me to embrace the change in myself- The change that forced me to grow and become the person I always wanted to be but never seemed to have the time to achieve. And change always involves risk. Stepping from the known into the unknown, I had to embrace uncertainty and accept that I was not in control.

It's been the ultimate test of my character, Forcing me to trust my heart and reach deep inside For strength and power I never knew I had. I came to realise that even though I had cancer, I was never a victim. I am survivor in heart and spirit and always will be- Even if that test takes me to my last breath.

Cancer truly is a defining moment, A moment that will make me redefine the impossible. And since I did, nothing will ever be the same again.... it will be better. © Suzy Toronto
