LECTORS & INTERCESSORS AT MASS TODAY

THE COLLECT AND READINGS

THE COLLECT Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: Give us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living, that we may come to those ineffable joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen.

THE LESSON

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Ecclesiasticus Chapter 44 beginning at the 1st verse

Let us now praise famous men, and our fathers in their generations. The Lord apportioned to them great glory, his majesty from the beginning. There were those who ruled in their kingdoms, and were men renowned for their power, giving counsel by their understanding, and proclaiming prophecies; leaders of the people in their deliberations and in understanding of learning for the people, wise in their words of instruction; those who composed musical tunes, and set forth verses in writing; rich men furnished with resources, living peaceably in their habitations -- all these were honored in their generations, and were the glory of their times. There are some of them who have left a name, so that men declare their praise. And there are some who have no memorial, who have perished as though they

had not lived; they have become as though they had not been born, and so have their children after them. But these were men of mercy, whose righteous deeds have not been forgotten; Their posterity will continue for ever, and their glory will not be blotted out. Their bodies were buried in peace, and their name lives to all generations.

Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God.

PSALM 149 Cantate Domino 15.

1.Hallelujah! Sing to the Lord a new song; * sing his praise in the congregation of the faithful.

2.Let Israel rejoice in his maker; * let the children of Zion be joyful in their king.

3.Let them praise his name in the dance; * let them sing praise to him with timbrel and harp.

4.For the Lord takes pleasure in his people* and adorns the poor with victory.

5.Let the faithful rejoice in triumph; * let them be joyful on their beds.

6.Let the praises of God be in their throat* and a two edged sword in their hand;

7.To wreak vengeance on the nations* and punishment on the peoples;

8.To bind their kings in chains* and their nobles in links of iron;

9.To inflict on them the judgement decreed;* this is glory for all his faithful people. Hallelujah!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Revelation to John Chapter 7 beginning at the 2nd verse

I saw another angel ascend from the rising of the sun, with the seal of the living God, and he called with a loud voice to the four angels who had been given power to harm earth and sea, saying, "Do not harm the earth or the sea or the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God upon their foreheads." And I heard the number of the sealed, a hundred and forty-four thousand sealed, out of every tribe of the sons of Israel. After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no man could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits upon the throne, and to the Lamb!" And all the angels stood round the throne and round the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God, saying, "Amen! Blessing and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honour and power and might be to our God for ever and ever! Amen." Then one of the elders addressed me, saying, "Who are these, clothed in white robes, and whence have they come?" I said to him, "Sir, you know." And he said to me, "These are they who have come out of the great tribulation; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night within his temple; and he who sits upon the throne will shelter them with his presence. They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; the sun shall not strike them, nor any scorching heat. For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd, and he will guide them to springs of living water; and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes."

Reader: Here ends the Reading All: Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

Glory to Christ our Saviour.

At that time seeing the crowds, Jesus went up on the mountain, and when he sat down his disciples came to him. And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. "Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. "Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so men persecuted the prophets who were before you.

The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

Hitherto I had only heard Mrs. Winifred Grant speak quietly after Mass or on the phone and perhaps even at meetings.

Most of us at the 6:15am Mass a few weeks ago, heard Mrs. Grant address the congregation in her own quiet manner; but with passion about the Parish Bazaar to be held on Saturday November 15.

On that occasion she spoke about having a fund-raiser with a difference and about the need to keep the Community Spirit alive in the area - both among the young and the not so young with the

Page 7: All saints day 2014

view that we at St. David's will lead the way and hence we have the Independence Pre Christmas Bazaar.

Mrs. Grant mentioned that there will be something for everyone:-

Children's Corner and Play Park.

Food Court-both Local and Caribbean.

Craft-including Xmas Craft Items.

Drinks for all ages and tastes.

Games for all ages.

Vegetables

Chinese Auction

As an important part of community outreach it was mentioned that there will be a Services Desk where persons would be invited to advertise their skill, be they mechanics, body-work repair men, painters, dress makers, care-givers, carpenters, plumbers, fitness trainers, masseur/ masseuse, physicians etc.

Persons would be invited to share business cards so we may distribute; or perhaps with the advancement of computer skills in the parish they can have business cards made.

She has thrown out the challenge for us to ”put our best foot forward” as we enter new territory and ensure that the effort be a success,

HEALTH CORNER

Last week we took a brief look at Stage I & 2 of breast cancer, here is a look at Stage 3 & 4:

!9

Page 10: All saints day 2014

Stage 3 is divided into subcategories known as 3A, 3B, and 3C.

• Stage 3A – no tumour is found in the breast or it is under 5cm and has spread to the lymph nodes in the armpit (which are clumped together) or it is bigger than 5cm and has spread to the lymph nodes.

• Stage 3B – the cancer has spread to tissue near the breast and may be attached to skin or muscle. There are usually cancer cells in the lymph nodes in the armpit.

• Stage 3C – the cancer has spread to 10 or more lymph nodes in the armpit, or to lymph nodes below the breastbone, near the neck or under the collarbone.

Sometimes stage 3 breast cancer is called locally advanced breast cancer.

Stage 4 The cancer has spread to other parts of the body such as the bones, liver or lungs. This is called secondary or metastatic breast cancer.

American Cancer Society recommendations for early breast cancer detection

✓ Women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health.

✓ Women in their 20s and 30s should have a clinical breast exam (CBE) as part of a periodic (regular) health exam by a health professional, at least every 3 years. After age 40, women should have a breast exam by a health professional every year.

✓ Women at high risk for breast cancer based on certain factors should have a mammogram every year.
