INTRODUCTIONS TO THE READINGS:
First reading Exodus 22:21-27 Oen our own difficult experiences can help us to be truly compassionate. This was very much the case in the past as well, as we hear in this reading. It should have a spe-cial resonance for Irish people today.
Second reading 1 Thessalonians 1:5-10 A word of appreciaon can work wonders. As we hear Paul praise the Chrisans in Thessalonica, we may wonder what he would say today, to our community of faith.
Gospel Mahew 22:34-40 Imagine someone has asked you to put in a few words the heart of the Jesus’ teach-ing. What would you say?

MARTIN LUTHER – 500 YEARS
Everywhere round the world we
are celebrang Marn Luther
five hundred years aer his chal-
lenge to the church of his me.
Marn was a German Augusni-
an friar, an energec theologian.
Faced with personal problems
and scruples and a church in
need of reform, he had great
insights in his faith from study of
the Bible, especially St. Paul’s
leers. In 1517 , he allegedly
pinned up 95 statements on the
church door about issues of faith
and hoped to have discussion on them. In a very complex polical and church situaon,
the challenge soon brought great conflict. The church was defensive and Luther aggres-
sive and soon his intervenon led to great conflict for centuries, with massive loss of
life in the religious wars.
Sadly, all sides read things from their own perspecves and the faith life of Europe was
fractured and that division spread over the whole world through the missionary work
of all the churches. All the churches recognised divisions were a contradicon of gospel
life. Ecumenical efforts were made to promote unity for well over a 100 years. With
Vacan II Council, a new energy was born in the Catholic Church about Church Unity.
The Council recognised the failures of the church that caused
the Reformaon. It also invited representaves of other
churches and listened to their voices as it wrote its docu-
ments for the future of the Catholic church. It thanked the
Protestant churches for their gis and especially their great
loyalty and creavity about the Scriptures, their sharp aware-
ness of the priesthood of all believers and their call to holi-
ness. It has joined with the different churches to study a
Chrisan way ahead to unity. In October 2016, Pope Francis
joined the world Federaon of Lutheran Churches in Sweden to celebrate the 500
anniversary of Luther’s protest. The theme was: “From conflict to communion – To-
gether in hope”.
Let us pray earnestly as we conclude this anniversary year that
“All may be One”. Fr Michael Screene MSC

Prayer of Pope Francis to Mary, Mother of Silence
Mother of silence, who watches over the mystery of God,
Save us from the idolatry of the present me, to which those who
forget are condemned.
Purify the eyes of Pastors with the eye-wash of memory:
Take us back to the freshness of the origins, for a prayerful, peni-
tent Church.
Mother of the beauty that blossoms from faithfulness to daily
work, Li us from the torpor of laziness, peness, and defeasm.
Clothe Pastors in the compassion that unifies, that makes whole;
Let us discover the joy of a humble, brotherly, serving Church.
Mother of tenderness who envelops us in paence and mercy,
Help us burn away the sadness, impaence and rigidity of those
who do not know what it means to belong.
Intercede with your Son to obtain that our hands, our feet, our
hearts be agile: let us build the Church with the truth of love.
Mother, we shall be the People of God, pilgrims bound for the
Kingdom.
