Can changes to the built environment encourage active liv-ing and impact our quality of life? The A.L.L. Outdoors staff certainly believes so. Over the past few years, the City of Rock Hill has engaged local citizen groups, businesses, edu-cators, community health advocates, cyclists, motorists, planners and transportation officials on how to improve the health and quality of life for those who live, work , visit and play in Rock Hill. Better connectivity and safer accommoda-tions for walking and biking were prevalent in many public forums and thereby incorporated into various planning doc-uments including the City’s 2020 Comprehensive Plan and the PRT Directions Master Plan update. In fall 2012, Rock Hill received a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly Community designation form the League of Ameri-can Bicyclists and City Council adopted the College Town Area Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan. The plan calls for several improvements aimed at making walking and biking safer and easier in the college town area. Phase one of the plan in-cludes pavement markings and signage on portions of Char-lotte Avenue, Elizabeth Lane, Oakland Avenue and Eden Ter-race. See page 3 for more information on these markings.

Benefits and Safety Tips for “Sharrows” and Bicycle Lanes Sharrows

Promote awareness and increase safety for cyclists and motorists. Denote preferred routes for cyclists Provide an option when there is not room for bicycle lanes Encourage safe passing by motorists. Reduce the incidence of wrong-way bicycling Applied where travel speeds do not exceed 35 MPH On a four lane road like Oakland Avenue, motorists can travel

in either lane but should move over to the left lane for efficien-cy or to safely pass cyclists.

On two lane roads, drivers should exercise patience while waiting until traffic allows them to safely pass.

Cyclists must also do their part by being predictable, operating their bikes in the designated areas on the road and adhering to state and local transportation laws.

Bicycle Lanes

Increase bicyclist comfort and confidence to ride on the road Create separation between bicyclists and automobiles Increases predictability of bicyclist and motorist interaction Allows users to travel at preferred speed without interference

Where did you grow up? Rock Hill, S.C.

How long have you worked for the City of Rock Hill? This year is lucky number 15!

What's your favorite A.L.L. Outdoors kayaking trip? The Moonlight Kayak Trips are my absolute favorite trips we offer, but my fa-vorite trip that I went on last year was the N.R. Goodale Cypress Swamp Tour. It was the final trip of the season, the weather was perfect, that swamp is beautiful, and the group was great!

What is your most memorable outdoor experience? As a child my family would go to the Chattooga River right off US76 on the weekends. We would picnic, swim in the river, watch rafters and kayakers come through the bulls sluice rapid, and just enjoy the outdoors. We also camped for a week right on the river each year. My dad loves the outdoors and passed that down to his children.

If you were an animal, which animal would you be? I would be a tiger, not because I’m a huge Clemson fan, but because they are strong and independent and can be impatient and not able to make up their minds at times. They usually know what they want and are able to work out a way to get it. I like to think that I go after what I want - most of the time. I love people - which is probably not a characteristic of a tiger, but that’s still the animal I pick!
