TORONTO – Tuesday April 14, 2015 ~ Earlier today, the lineup for the 29th edition of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival was unveiled as nine nights of programming take over Nathan Phillips Square, the hub of the Festival. From June 19 to June 27, performers set to hit the Toronto Star stage include blues sensation Gary Clark Jr., the legendary Al Jarreau, Tower of Power, Christian McBride, rising stars Snarky Puppy and more. Tower of Power – Saturday, June 20, 8:30 p.m. Almost 50 years later, Tower of Power is still selling out concerts worldwide with their own distinctive brand of soul music. Driven by powerful horns and tight bass lines, T.O.P. puts on a live show like no other.

The Legendary Count Basie Orchestra directed by Scotty Barnhart, Guest Vocalist Carmen Bradford – Sunday, June 21, 8:30 p.m. Started in 1935, with its irresistible Kansas City Swing beat, Count Basie developed and maintained one of the greatest jazz orchestras in music history. Today, the Count Basie Orchestra continues to set the standard of excellence, swinging and shouting the blues as it celebrates its 80th anniversary.

Al Jarreau – Monday, June 22, 8:30 p.m. Seven-‐time Grammy Award winner Al Jarreau is one of the most exciting and critically acclaimed performers of our time. His innovative musical expressions and unique vocal style have defied genres over the years – he is the only vocalist in history to win a Grammy in the jazz, pop and R&B categories – easily earning him the title of “greatest jazz singer alive” (TIME). Christian McBride Big Band – Tuesday, June 23, 8:30 p.m. As one of the premier bassists of today’s jazz and pop scene, Christian McBride returns to the Festival stage this summer with a 17-‐piece big band. Continuously redefining the boundaries of jazz, McBride has never been one to shy away from R&B, funk, fusion or pop. From Sting and Billy Joel to Sonny Rollins and Pat Metheny, his resume reads like a list of who’s who in music.

Booker T. Jones – Wednesday, June 24, 8:30 p.m During his tenure at Stax Records in the 60s as leader of the legendary Booker T and the MGs, Booker T had a prolific career performing on hundreds of recordings for musicians such as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Bill Withers. On hits such as “Green Onions,” “Hang ‘em High,” and “Time is Tight,” the classic Stax sound was one of the most respected and imitated of their era. Booker T set the cast for modern soul music and is largely responsible for its enduring popularity today.

Al Di Meola Elegant Gypsy & More Electric Tour – Thursday, June 25, 8:30 p.m. One of the most defining albums in fusion, Elegant Gypsy was released in 1977 and became the hallmark of Al Di Meola’s playing style – a mix of jazz and rock intermixed with flamenco themes and lightning-‐fast guitar riffs. Whether touring with his World Sinfonia band or past musical ensembles like Rite of Strings, 70’s fusion supergroup Return To Forever, or the internationally acclaimed Trio, Di Meola is a bona fide guitar hero and virtuoso of the highest order.

Snarky Puppy – Friday, June 26, 8:30 p.m. Snarky Puppy has gone from the best-‐kept secret to one of the most respected names in instrumental music. Endlessly innovative, this Brooklyn-‐based collective plays with an irresistible mix of funk, fire and finesse. Their live shows are unparalleled in energy, virtuosity and sheer musicianship.

Gary Clark Jr. – Saturday, June 27, 8:30 p.m. In just a few short years, Gary Clark Jr. has quickly made a name for himself. He’s been dubbed “The New Hendrix” and “The Chosen One”. A bona fide guitar hero, Clark has taken the music world by storm from gigging in Austin to guest spots with the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney and even a performance at the White House. A genre-‐defying artist, Clark is also the first to ever be recognized with Grammy nominations in both rock and R&B categories for the same album in the same year.

Ulf Wakenius and Alvin Queen, original members of the Oscar Peterson Quartet, will be joined by Robi Botos and Christian McBride as they pay homage in a special performance to some of Peterson’s most famous works. This evening’s performance will also feature historic photos of Peterson and will be narrated by his daughter, Celine. Robert Glasper Trio – Tuesday, June 23, 8:00 p.m. Fresh off the heels of his Grammy win earlier this year, Robert Glasper returns to the Festival stage with his acclaimed acoustic trio. Featuring Damion Reid on drums and Vicente Archer on bass, they will be performing music from their upcoming album, Covered (out June 16, 2015). Consisting of covers, the album includes music from Joni Mitchell, John Legend, Kendrick Lamar and Radiohead. An Evening with Branford Marsalis – Wednesday, June 24, 8:00 p.m. Saxophonist Branford Marsalis is one of the most celebrated jazz performers of the last quarter-‐century. Garland Jeffreys – Thursday, June 25 Bob Marley once referred to him as the only American who could really sing reggae. A quintessential New York edgy, urban poet, confessional singer-‐songwriter and explorer of race and rebellion, Garland Jeffreys’ ability to mix rock, soul, blues, reggae and Latin influences earned him a cult following during the 70s and 80s. Now with a second wind at the age of 71 (he’s released two albums since 2011), Jeffreys has earned a swarm of critical praise and experiencing his most prolific stretch in decades.

Sonny Knight & The Lakers – Friday, June 26 Nearly 50 years after recording his first single, Sonny Knight returns to the spotlight with a debut album backed by The Lakers – a powerful first record of hard-‐hitting vintage soul. With exuberant, energetic vocals and a versatile repertoire, Knight’s on-‐stage presence belies his age. At 67, he’s only just begun his reinvention, “These are dreams I had forgotten. JAZZ 101: School’s in Session for Summer TORONTO – Tuesday April 14, 2015 ~ Go beyond the music and explore the educational side of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival’s exciting initiatives including workshops, master classes, postsecondary outreach, mentorship and a number of hands-‐on programs in support of emerging artists and jazz fans of all ages. All sessions are free and open to the public. The Big Band Slam features four Greater Toronto Area high school big bands in concert at The Rex Jazz & Blues Bar on Thursday, June 25, from 2 to 5 p.m. This afternoon of trumpet blasting, trombone sliding, sax squealing excitement will showcase some of the outstanding music being made by high school students across the city. Saxophonist, composer and educator Kelly Jefferson serves as this year’s guest artist, performing with each ensemble. This event is sponsored by the Ken Page Memorial Trust.

The Youth Jazz Showcase highlights outstanding young jazz talent from at home and abroad. On Saturday, June 27, three bands will take to the Toronto Star Stage at Nathan Phillips Square: the National Youth Jazz Combo (Canada); the George Garzone Berklee Quartet (Berklee College, Boston); and from Hokkaido, Japan, the North Pandemic Groove Quartet, winners of the 2014 Sapporo Jazz Festival competition. This event is sponsored by the Ken Page Memorial Trust. The Artistic Director’s Guide to Jazz seeks to go “beyond the bio,” providing an in-‐depth personal look at some of the artists performing in the 2015 TD Toronto Jazz Festival. In regular online posts, Artistic Director Josh Grossman details what makes an artist great through personal anecdotes, video clips and more. The TDJ News Corps is an initiative geared toward postsecondary students who are interested in writing about jazz. Successful applicants to the TDJ News Corps program are given full media accreditation for the Festival, granting them unprecedented access and allowing them to attend and review concerts, interview artists and experience the Festival from behind the scenes. In addition, TDJ News Corps members are assigned a mentor – an experienced music journalist: Deirdre Kelly, a staff writer for the Globe & Mail, and JAZZ.FM91 Senior Arts Editor Mark Wigmore. The Festival is once again excited to work with local high school students in Toronto in support of Groove & Graffiti. This grassroots program creatively combines the inspirational side of art and the inspirational (and improvisational) side of jazz. Generously sponsored by TD, Groove & Graffiti is led by top local aerosol artists Elicser and Mediah, and will culiminate in an open-‐air canvas on Saturday, June 27.

Jazz for the Teach features interactive sessions geared towards middle and high school music teachers looking to hone their jazz teaching skills. Led each year by seasoned jazz performers and educators, Jazz for the Teach sheds new light on jazz in the classroom, and will help remove some of the mystique surrounding improvisation, leading a jazz ensemble and more. The 2015 edition of Jazz for the Teach featured two sessions at North Toronto Collegiate Institute as part of the Toronto District School Board Professional Development day on February 13: a session on jazz fundamentals and small ensemble playing led by Chase Sanborn, and a session on big bands led by Jules Estrin. From its modest beginnings with only three official venues, the Toronto Jazz Festival has grown in 29 years to become one of the country’s largest music festivals, attracting over 500,000 people annually to more than 40 venues, clubs and stages all across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). With a rich tradition of presenting the young lions, the jazz greats and tomorrow’s rising stars, the Festival has woven its way into the very fabric of Toronto and become the sound of the city. Responsible for the TD Toronto Jazz Festival, Patrick Taylor serves as Executive Producer and CEO of Toronto Downtown Jazz. Taylor was most recently recognized for his contributions to jazz with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Festival and Events Ontario and named a 2014 Jazz Hero by the Jazz Journalists Association. A graduate of the University of Toronto Jazz program, Josh Grossman brings invaluable experience to his role as Artistic Director of the TD Toronto Jazz Festival. He was Artistic Director for four years with the Markham Jazz Festival; he is the founding Artistic Director and conductor of the Toronto Jazz Orchestra, now in its 17th year. In addition to his work with Toronto Downtown Jazz, Grossman is the Operations Manager for Continuum Contemporary Music, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, and co-‐chair of the Toronto Arts Council Music Committee. Grossman can be seen performing regularly with his Toronto Jazz Orchestra (conductor) and on trumpet with the Chris Hunt Tentet.
