MESSAGES IN SHADOW: THEATRE POSTERSThe goal of the project was to convey the message of each play using a theme that runs throughout the series, while maintaining unique style elements. To solve this design problem, I used the concept of the shadow (or silhouette) of central characters in each play to convey that play’s message. For example, the title character of Pygmalion is shown with a firm stance, showing the transformation into a lady that occurs throughout the play.

YES! YES! YES! THE LEGEND OF DANIEL BRYANThis was an editorial spread created to highlight the career of WWE Superstar Daniel Bryan, with a focus on clean typography. To solve this design problem, I incorporated images of the wrestler that show his progress from “indy darling” to a major asset to the world-renowned sports entertainment organization.

Programs used: Photoshop CS5, InDesign CS5

Daniel Bryan is a sports enter-tainer and professional wrestler currently plying his trade in World Wrestling Entertainment. Also known by his real name Bryan Danielson, the young superstar has a long list of achievements and accomplishments in his career spanning the course of over a decade. From as days as a founding father of Ring of Honor, to a very successful reign as WWE World Heavyweight Cham-pion, Danielson is a shining ex-ample of independent wrestlers making it in the “big leagues.”

Bryan Danielson’s origins are humble, training in the Texas Wrestling Academy headed by now WWE Hall of Famer Shawn Michaels. Trained by William Regal among others, Danielson quickly made a name for himself under the masked guise of “The American Dragon.” From there it was a meteoric rise through the indies, helping found the promo-tion Ring of Honor and estab-lishing the tradition of sports-manship with a set of conduct guidelines known as the “Code of Honor.” While in ROH, Danielson

held the World and Pure titles, being the man to unify the belts. He would go on to have a great amount of success in such com-panies as Pro Wrestling Guerrilla and Full Impact Pro.

In 2009, Danielson was given the opportunity to sign a develop-mental contract with the WWE, wrestling in their official “farm promotion” Florida Champion-ship Wrestling. A few months later, he and other wrestlers were given the chance to compete in the inaugural season of WWE NXT, a “scripted reality show” with the goal of winning a con-tract with the main WWE roster. (It should be noted that FCW was recently renamed NXT, a sign that the promotion truly is the future of the WWE.) Despite being relatively unknown to the mainstream audience, and even with all the obstacles thrown his way, Danielson (wrestling under

his WWE-sanctioned moniker Daniel Bryan) gained a good deal of popular-ity with the WWE Universe before his elimination from the competition. This was followed up with the rise of The Nexus, referring to the NXT Rookies, leading to an attack on John Cena and others at ringside. As part of the angle, Danielson was seen choking out announcer Justin Roberts with his own tie, a controversial action that caused his release from the company in June 2010.

Being fired from the WWE did not put an end to Danielson, however. Shortly after his release, Danielson made a triumphant return to the indepen-dent circuit wrestling in a number of promotions including Dragon Gate USA and EVOLVE, the latter of which was developed by Gabe Sapolsky with the assistance of Danielson who even gave the EVOLVE name to the company. In August, amidst a large amount of support from the fans, WWE called Danielson back to return at the Summerslam Pay-Per-View where he teamed with John Cena and other WWE mainstays to take on his former Nexus allies.

Daniel Bryan made an immediate im-pact upon his return, soon defeating his former on-screen mentor The Miz for the United States Championship. A short time later, he won the Smack-down MiTB Match at the 2011 Money in the Bank PPV for a future World Heavyweight Championship match. He took advantage of a fallen Big Show to win the belt on an episode of Smackdown, leading to a surpris-ing change of attitude for Bryan, who

began using questionable means of holding onto the belt. He would be champion until Wrestlemania 28, when he lost the title to Sheamus in an eighteen second squash match. The embarrassing loss could not break the fans’ love of Daniel Bryan, as shown on Raw the next night through the constant chants of “Yes! Yes! Yes!” in response to his enthusi-asm during his title run.

Bryan would find himself dealing with the Big Red Monster known as Kane, who promised to show the former NXT Rookie the true meaning of “anger management.” Through a hilarious set of skits involving therapy with the likes of Dr. Shelby and Harold (known to indy wrestling fans as Scorpio Sky), the two former World champions eventually formed a tag team named Team Hell No by a WWE Raw-Active fan poll (as part of Bryan’s attitude issues, he has begun shouting “NO” at the crowd and other when they start up “Yes” chants). The team has been on a tear lately, winning the WWE Tag Team Championships and helping to bring a new focus to the tag division.

FRANKENSTEIN BOOK COVERThe goal of this book cover was to use an unconven-tional image, something different from the typi-cal images associated with the famous novel. The photography uses stark contrasts in lighting, and the typography is clean and modern in showing the relevance of the story to the current age.

The project went through many changes throughout time. Initially a set of boxes for each flavor (see above), it became one box for all three flavors, with numerous changes (see right).

UNIQUE TILING AND STYLING BRANDINGThe client called for a unique logo (pun not intended) for his tiling business, showcasing the business in a way that was not cliche. The solution called for use of tiles to build upon the company name, and clean typography to complement the logomark.

FIVE DOLLAR WRESTLING REBRANDINGThe design problem called for a rebranding of a local business. The solution answers the need for a logo, deliverables, and a website while addressing the history, trends, target audience, and goals of the business using a grid-based layout and careful use of typography.

ZEROCANVAS INTERNSHIP: CROSSROADS IN CHICAGOOne of the major design problems raised in the internship was to create a theme and visual identity for IndyCC, a con-ference held every winter for the ministry organization CRU. Using the theme “Immerse,” and a logo created by intern Stephanie Livingston, the team created promotional pieces including the information card and letterhead I designed, shown here. During the summer, I also created a theme and informational card for a campus ministry’s fall retreat, and designed websites for two other campus ministries.
