Fiends of Ten Little Monkey Apps Friends of Ten is an activity to be used in the early years of schooling to introduce an early understanding of numbers to ten, counting objects to ten, subitising - recognising a collection of objects without counting them, counting on from a higher number, partitioning of objects and the combinations that make ten 8+2, 2+8, 1+9, 3+7 etc. These skills underpin mental addition and subtraction.

The importance of recalling number combinations that make ten are that students use strategies for addition, that is, knowing that 7+3 is the same as 8+2. This introduces the idea of patterns and compensation (one up, one down). These activities develop the concept that addition and subtraction are linked.

The App is broken up into a number of sections. A teaching module and independent tasks to reinforce skills.-a blank form with counters to be used with teacher interaction-Show me task to create a given number on the Tens frame-How many? -Friends of Ten -How many less?-How many more?

Subitising Flash Cards Little Monkey Apps subitising provides beginning counters the opportunity to practice and test their subitising knowledge to quickly recognize small groups of objects without counting. When you look at a die, you don’t need to count the dots. This immediate response is called subitising. Students can then build on this knowledge of standard patterns (die patterns) to look at non-standard patterns, mentally and visually manipulating the position of the objects and subitise the objects present. Subitising provides opportunities for students to ‘trust the count’ which links to early addition and subtraction, counting on and counting back. Subitising allows students to see and interpret patterns and part-whole relationships such as 2+1+2=5 on a die.

-Flash card -Flash cards with non-standard positioning of images up to twelve. Double click screen to show matching numeral. Swipe to move onto next card.-Dice -Flash cards with standard presentation of die dots. Swipe to move onto next card.-Doubles Dice -Flash cards with standard presentation of dice dots on two dice. This is useful to extend subitizing into addition facts. Swipe to move onto next card.-Ten frames -Flashcards with standard and non-standard presentation of dots in a ten frame. Double click screen to show matching numeral. Swipe to move onto the next card.-Number Match -A simple Game in which you are asked to click the numeral to match the group of images presented.-Teacher Tool -Create your own subitising card then use the pencil tool to show groups or move the position of objects. Useful for demonstrating thinking or for demonstrating metacognition skills.

Dominoes Addition builds upon early subitising skills and extends this into early addition skills. Dominoes are used to teach basic sums, fill the gap sums and equal sums (equations) using the familiar dot pattern found on dominoes.

Number Lines helps to introduce the concept of number lines to young students through the use of cute little frogs that make steps and leaps. When introducing basic mathematical skills such as counting, ordering, addition and subtraction, it is important to use a variety of models such as a counters, drawings and number lines to explain and physically model problems.Number Lines aims to students to visualise numbers for rote counting and ordering and to see the physical position of a number linking patterns and relationships. Unlike counters, which model counting, a number line also models measurement, which is why the number line begins with zero as you would see on a ruler. Students are also exposed to different vocabulary for addition and subtraction such as step forward or jump back to physically suggest the movement of the frog along the number line. Little Monkey Apps Number Lines can be used for a variety of purposes including simple counting, to make jumps or leaps, to model addition and subtraction, for a group of students to demonstrate their thinking visually, to practice skip counting and to demonstrate simple multiples.

Ten Frame Mania – Play and learn number sense. This app helps with understanding cardinality of numbers and how different numbers work together. The goal of the game is eliminate numbers moving on a pathway. To eliminate them, you have to make them using a ten frame. As you progress through the levels, the numbers will enter the pathway sooner and will move faster through it. Can you make them fast enough and before they reach the end of the map? Can you go faster by using the shortcuts to fill the 5 or 10 frames, hence making the numbers more quickly?

There are six levels, each containing three rounds. As you progress through the levels, the range of the number and the amount of numbers are bigger. And the challenge grows too! Also available on desktop- http://gregtangmath.com/tenframemania

MathTappers: Find Sums is designed to help learners to master basic addition and subtraction facts with understanding and then to encourage them to continue playing to develop efficient strategies and eventually improve their recall speed (fluency). This app doesn’t rely on the ‘magic’ of flash cards but rather presents useful models to support learners as they make sense of addition and subtraction. Although the game appears to be focused only on addition – subtraction is an inherent part of their activity and learning. Learners using this app are developing a sense of the relationship between two addends and a sum - providing them with opportunities to master both addition and subtraction facts concurrently. You cannot really understand that 7+3=10 or 3+7=10 without also understanding the rest of the fact family – i.e., that 10-7=3 and 10-3=7. It is expected that working with groups of fact families that share a common sum (e.g., sum to 10) will help learners to make connections between these families and synergistically enhance their mastery process.
