In quest of an after hours pet clinicWAWMEESH

G. HAMILTONAlberni VAlley news

Port Alberni resident Mel Dunlop

remembers Sept. 10 clearly. It was 30 degrees outside, the last of the summer heat leaving the Valley. The fall fair had just left town and school was back.

But her idyllic day was broken that evening when her daughter’s family dog suffered complications from spay surgery.

Her daughter rushed her to a local veterinary clinic but it was closed. She was advised to bring the dog to the Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital in Nanaimo.

Despite animal doctors best efforts there though nothing could be done, and the dog was euthanized.

“She could have been treated here or at least patched up so she could have survived the trip to Nanaimo,” Dunlop said.

“But she wasn’t treated here. It would have been more humane to put her down rather than suffer that trip.”

When she made further inquiries, Dunlop found that after-hours veterinary care isn’t available to pet owners in Port Alberni, something she felt would have saved her daughter’s dog.

The tragic incident has spurred Dunlop to activism.

Wanting after-hours animal care in the Valley is a good idea in principle. But making it work requires enough animals and a higher standard of care,

something one local animal professional says just won’t work.

Dunlop is clear that she has no quarrel with the veterinarians or the quality of care they provide, she said. Her issue is the unavailability of care after hours, she added.

According to Dunlop no veterinary facility in Port Alberni is open after hours, something she finds frustrating.

“What do they think, that animals only get sick between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. - yeah, as if,” she said.

More frustrating to Dunlop is that there is a need for after-hours animal care availability. “We’ve got more animals and more vets in town but no proper service — how do you figure that?” she said.

For after hours animal care people are referred to an emergency number where someone is available around-the-clock.

“The problem is the people on the other end of the emergency line are located in Nanaimo – what good does that do anyone here?” Dunlop said.

Port Alberni used to have after-hours animal care available, she said.

Dunlop’s dog required medical attention and she called former Alberni vet Dr. Aylard, who treated her dog after hours.

Dunlop is clear that the issue isn’t personal or professional with any local animal care provider. Instead, Twenty-four hour animal care is a consumer product and we’re the consumers, she said.

Local clinics should

be lobbied to work together to work out providing 24 hour care.

“And if they don’t want to, then we should find someone who will come here and provide it,” she said.

Dunlop has spoken to Port Alberni Mayor John Douglas about the matter.

“If we’re going to be shuffled off to Nanaimo then we might as well become their suburb, pay our taxes to them, get the service and fire everyone here,” she

said.Dunlop has started a

Facebook group: Save My Pet 24 hour vets,

which has more than 260 members who share the same concern about 24 hour animal care in

the Valley.She’s also started a

petition asking Valley residents to demand after-hours animal care in the Valley and has collected more than 400 signatures so far.

And she’s requesting an appearance before Port Alberni City Council at their next

meeting to lobby for the issue.

The News called several veterinary clinics in Alberni.

All but one said they were too busy to take a call.

Wanting after-hours animal care is one thing, veterinary doctor Holly Tillotsen said, but the standard of care and number of animals required to underwrite the initiative is too burdensome.

Tillotsen provides animal care at Pacific Rim Veterinary Clinic on Johnston Road. The clinic is open Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The clinic doesn’t offer weekend or after

hours service, she said.

The clinic offers medical procedures for soft tissue issues, wellness exams, spay and neutering, as well as internal medicine issues.

The College of Veterinarians of British Columbia regulates the veterinary profession in B.C. The association’s code of conduct doesn’t reference after-hours care per se.

But the Duty to Patients and Clients section notes that members must make a reasonable effort to be available, or make arrangement for follow up and care.

All veterinary clinics refer pet owners to the Central Island Emergency Clinic in Nanaimo for after hours care, Tillotsen said.

Nanaimo’s clinic is referred to for several reasons, she said. Port Alberni is part of Nanaimo’s after hours service area, which includes Nanaimo, Duncan, Parksville, Qualicum and Bowser. The facility is also larger and better equipped than most clinics.

“They have more animals that require care at night and veterinary technicians and equipment available 24 hours a day,” Tillotsen said. “It’s a standard of care that we can’t hope to rise to.”

If the service were offered, then it wouldn’t be much of one. “You couldn’t do much except maybe duct tape them together until the next morning,” she said.

At the end of the day it boils down to a business decision, Tillotsen said. “We

need a certain animal population base and a large number of clinic referrals to keep the business going and we don’t have that,” she said.

Who or where Dunlop can turn to raise the issue is complicated.

The College of Veterinarians in B.C. falls under the loose auspices of the B.C. Ministry of Agriculture. “But veterinary clinics are governed by the college itself,” a ministry spokesperson said.

Small clinics are obliged to provide 24 hour emergency pet care if they aren’t able to, the spokesperson said.

As well, “The businesses (clinics) decide among themselves what their catchment area will be. Private industry regulates that; it has nothing to do with government,” the spokesperson said.

There is a difference between vet clinics and the Central Island Veterinary Emergency Hospital, Dr. Karen Karsten said. “Where we tend to differ is the types of medical situations we deal with routinely are sometimes things the average clinic sees only occasionally,” she said. “The level of monitoring and diagnostic equipment, added to the ‘cage-side’ 24 hour care, sets us apart from clinics.”

Previously, the only 24-hour animal care facility was in Victoria. Clinic staffs used to work exhausting hours on call. Most veterinarians were women, who found that the hours strained their family lives.

Sickcare vs. HealthcareThere are many facets to healthcare – regular exercise, eating nutritious

foods, drinking pure water, keeping our teeth and spine healthy, having won-derful relationships with our loved ones and living in a world of trust that with due diligence, everything will work out in our favour. In healthcare, we work hard at staying well because we understand our inborn health potential is on the job. That focus can lead to an internal chemistry of trust that furthers our wellbeing.

Sickcare revolves around the management of symptoms, sickness and dis-ease. It focuses on what is wrong with us. We are, as a result, always waiting to get sick. We become the worried well. When we concentrate on what is wrong with us, we develop the idea that our wellbeing is always beyond our control. That leads to an internal chemistry of fear that can foster disease.

What’s the main difference between health or sick care approaches? Health-care looks at what supports health and sickcare looks at what makes us sick. Let’s say there are twenty people in a room and out of twenty, three become ill and seventeen stay well. Healthcare advocates would investigate why the sev-enteen stayed well. Sickcare proponents would conduct studies to determine why three out of twenty got sick.

It is a fundamental law of the universe that what we concentrate on, as individuals and as a society, expands. I believe we attract either positive or negative health experiences into our life depending on what we expect. And although our belief system is not the only factor in disease, it amplifies genetic and environmental factors. We become what we think about.

Here’s the take home message. Educate yourself and act on your health when you’re feeling well, not just when you’re uncomfortable. Realize if you work at getting and staying healthy, your body is more likely to give you years of life and add life to those years.

It takes faith to realize, understand and empower yourself with the fact your body is wonderfully self-healing and self-regulating, that we’re designed to be well. But it also takes faith to believe your body is about to be overpowered by a germ, the flu, cholesterol, cancer, high blood pressure....

Why not err on the greater side of faith? It’s your choice. It’s your life.Peace, Carl

Medical marijuana closerWAWMEESH

G. HAMILTONAlberni VAlley news

Port Alberni’s second medical marijuana facility has taken another step closer to reality.

A public hearing about rezoning to accommodate the facility was held at city council chambers on Sept. 30.

Only three people attended the meeting, outnumbered by city council and staff.

Dion Hopkins has applied to have the former Stephens Sheet Metal building on Bute Street zoned to accommodate a medical marijuana production, packaging and lab facility.

Councillors advanced the request to a public hearing at their Sept. 23 meeting.

No member of the public spoke to the matter but two written submissions, one from the owner of the Laidlaw Bus Lines building on Fourth Avenue, and another from the Bute Street Veterinary Clinic, were read into the record.

Councillors had a lot of questions about the development for

Hopkins, who was present.

The planning department supports a limited zoning text amendment to the specific property as opposed to a broader amendment.

City planner Scott Smith later clarified that an amendment to the light industry category could see every property owner wanting a medical marijuana facility.

Several councillors inquired about the potential for a marijuana odour in the neighbourhood. And a letter from the

vet clinic on Bute Street echoed the same concern.

Hopkins replied that an extensive filter, screen and ventilation system will be employed.

As well, the facility’s previous tenant grew marijuana there and no one complained about the smell, he said.

Councillor Cindy Solda asked about the number of plants the facility will have, as well as about its security procedures.

Dion replied that the facility isn’t a grow facility, but rather a

research, production and packaging one. As such, it will have between 10-300 plants on site depending on what’s required.

The facility will have a layered security system that would include a passcard-lock access, motion detectors, night vision cameras and alarms.

The building is made of cinder block and would take considerable time and effort to get through, Dion added.

The facility would have fire sprinklers, but the jury is still out on whether or not it is a fire hazard, Port Alberni Fire Department Chief Tim Pley said.

“There’s more potential for an indoor fire than an outdoor one,” he said.

Comprehensive fire protection is built into the application via the building code, Pley said.

“But we’ll know more after the building permit process,” he said.

Council will vote on the application after a report has been presented about it at their next meeting.

After hours care costlyFrom / 3Karsten said that

she felt that Nanaimo didn’t need another veterinary clinic, but rather the region needed a 24 hour emergency hospital.

Karsten examined already established guidelines, which noted that one hour of travel is a reasonable distance to use an emergency hospital, she said. Emergency staff and equipment area ready on arrival. However, at clinics there can be wait times due to paging, call backs, travel and set up, she added.

“The amount of time from the owner initiating the process to receiving the full level of care required at their regular clinic, one discovers that it often may be quicker to come to our facility directly,” Karsten

said.Running a staffed

and equipped after hours has overhead costs, Karsten said. She estimates that it takes approximately 30 full-time veterinarian positions in regular practice regularly referring to an emergency clinic to make it financially sustainable.

Subsequently, Nanaimo receives regular referrals from Chemainus up to Qualicum Beach with some cases from Duncan and Courtenay/Comox, as well as from Port Alberni.

Karsten says she consulted with several clinicians in Port Alberni before she opened, and they agreed that Nanaimo’s ability to provide a new level of supervised care was

of significant benefit, she said.

Nanaimo regularly treats animals from Port Alberni on an emergency basis, Karsten said. “Most clients, once they understand the process and its benefits, are pleased that we are here to offer the services we do,” she said.

Some people are unwilling to make the trek into Nanaimo, Karsten said. But, “most are not upset by this trip as they realize that we are waiting for them the second they arrive with a fully operational and staffed facility,” she said.

The choice to use Nanaimo is made by each veterinary clinic, and not by the college of veterinarians, Karsten said. “Over

the past two-and-a-half years of providing services for Port Alberni, we have continued to get a great deal of positive feedback from clients and the clinics we support,” she said.

Back in Port Alberni, Dunlop says if something isn’t done then she’s prepared to take more drastic measures. “I’ll picket the clinics and tell people to take their animals to Nanaimo during business hours the same way the clinics do to other people,” she said.

Immersion exceeds French This is the third

in a series on non-traditional school choices in the Alberni Valley.

CHRISTOPHER SUNAlberni VAlley news

Port Alberni’s École des Grands-Cèdres is a Francophone school, independent of School District 70 but part of a separate Francophone school district, No. 93.

The basic difference between a Francophone school and a French Immersion program is that everything from École des Grands-Cèdres’ website to how they answer telephone calls are all in French.

In French Immersion, there is

more English spoken.Only children

with at least one Francophone parent were allowed to attend this French only school in the past, but changes in effect next September will slightly open the doors of this small, 16-student school that teaches Kindergarten to Grade 4 in two classrooms.

“Now with the new policy, parents who have been in French Immersion and can speak French, now they are going to be allowed to bring their children here,” said principal Annie Bedard.

“We believe we will have a few more students at least with this new policy in place.”

“Everything is in French, except the English class,” Bedard said, smiling.

Grands-Cèdres is unique compared to other Port Alberni public schools. First, the school falls under the provincial umbrella of all Francophone schools in the province, which is School District 93 and is part of Le Conseil scolaire francophone de la Colombie-Britannique. Francophone education is guaranteed under the Charter of Rights, giving children the right to be educated in either of Canada’s two official languages.

As such, there is special funding available to the school which allows the

school to operate. Being one of 38

schools in this province-wide school district means it didn’t experience the same level of budget cuts as the local Alberni School District 70 did, due to dropping enrolment.

“We will not be cutting bus service, that is for sure,” Bedard said, explaining that many of her 16 students are bused to school.

“All of our Francophone students come all-around.”

The French program has been provided in Port Alberni since 1979 but it was in 1999 when Grands-Cèdres was created with an opening enrolment of 17 students.

Victoria — From Stockholm to Sydney to

Sicamous, September was a bad month for science.

In Sweden, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change finally issued its widely leaked update on human-caused global warming.

As expected, it downgraded predictions of temperature rise in the face of 15 years of measurements that show little or no average surface temperature increase.

The official spin also went as expected. The revelation that more than a dozen computer prediction models have all more or less agreed, and all have been wrong, was played down.

The IPCC went from “very likely” to “extremely likely” to affirm its belief in human-caused warming, even as its own core evidence went

the other way.Again and again we are

told that the vast majority of scientists believe in human-caused warming, and those who don’t are labeled “skeptics” or even “deniers” with hidden agendas. The problem is, science isn’t supposed to be done by polls or popularity contests, or assertions of faith like those that greeted Galileo’s wild claim that Earth is not the centre of the solar system.

Before the angry mail starts to arrive, let me hasten to add I am not arguing for or against the theory of human-caused climate change. You can label me a “skeptic” as I view the temperature readings and the shifting theories advanced to explain them.

Speaking of temperature data, David Suzuki had a problem with that at a TV town hall in Australia. Polite, well-informed questions soon revealed that while Suzuki

rails constantly about the horrors of global warming, he doesn’t actually know much about the latest science.

As I’ve written before regarding his CBC-funded attacks on Canada’s oil and gas industry, Suzuki is not only behind on his homework, he resorts to cheap, sensational tricks

to exaggerate and misrepresent hazards. His tactics are identical to the U.S.-financed environment groups

that obsessively target Canadian petroleum.

As for his appearance on Australia’s public broadcaster, don’t take my word for it. Just Google “An Audience with David Suzuki” and watch the show for yourself.

Back in B.C., local politicians gathered in Vancouver for their annual convention. One of the most intense debates was over a call to the provincial government to declare B.C. “genetic

engineering free.”The heart of this

movement, which has resorted to vandalism in Europe, is hostility towards Monsanto’s “Roundup ready” seed. Speakers at the municipal convention warned of sinister “corporations” trying to contaminate and control our food supply for profit.

The debate pitted hobby farmers against professionals. Peace region grain farmers said such a ban would put them out of business. Others pointed out that the province has no jurisdiction and that scientific decisions shouldn’t be influenced by emotion.

The session ended with a classic pseudo-scientific claim.

A woman who used to have a couple of bee boxes said someone’s bees died and there was a Roundup-ready canola field next door.

Case closed. The misguided “G.E.-free B.C.” motion was supported by a narrow majority.

EDITORIAL

Longer terms more effective

A number of interesting motions and discussions arose from last week’s annual Union of B.C. Municipalities convention, including a proposal calling for extending terms of office for mayors and city councillors from three years to four.

Bring it on. Anyone who has regularly watched municipal politicians in action or has served on such a board knows the avalanche of information the newest members must absorb.

On top of learning the history of past decisions and choices to create the proper context for making good decisions, rookies must try to memorize the process and learn how best to work within those confines to be the most effective. In our estimation, it takes between one and two years minimum for an elected official to reasonably understand the job. Therefore, this only leaves about one year where they’re proficient to best represent the people.

Extending a term by another year will give residents better bang for their tax buck, reduce election costs and council turnover, and put municipalities in sync with provincial elections. This timing would aid in limiting the costs some municipalities have had to accrue once a current mayor or councillor wins a provincial election, which, obviously, triggers costly byelections, such as the one about to happen in Coquitlam to the tune of around $140,000. The proposal passed with a 60 per cent approval rate, with one rural delegate stating the idea came from “professional politicians” in the Lower Mainland.

While that may be true, it doesn’t change the fact that this is an idea whose time may have come. And it’s not as though there isn’t precedent for this in Canada. If such a plan is enacted, B.C. would fall in step with every other province except for the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Overall, we would be better served by having longer terms, both in terms of effectiveness and money saved.

Often, we say a ‘grace’ before a meal; that the food may ‘bless’ our bodies. To that may be added a prayer that we may be a blessing in the world. When I think about this a bit more, I remind myself that it is actually God, not the food, that is being blessed. The psalms are full of blessings of God.

‘Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all that is within me, bless God’s holy name. Bless the Lord, O my soul; and forget not all of God’s benefits.’ (Ps. 103:1,2)

As we approach Thanksgiving weekend, then, there are three blessings; first for what we have received; secondly, that we may be a blessing for others; and finally (or firstly), a blessing of the Creator of all blessings, God.

Mailbag: Feedback on fossil fuel, bigger bills and fighting disease.

Fossil fuel thinking needed

To the Editor,The fifth

report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) was released last week. The results should be sobering to a world addicted to fossil fuels.

The report presents a “carbon budget” for the planet. It suggests that we can burn up to one trillion metric tonnes of carbon before the planet will undergo a two degree Celsius increase in temperature.

This is the temperature above which scientists believe we will begin to experience catastrophic climate change.

Apparently we have already burned half of the trillion tonnes since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. The projection is that if we continue at the present rate of carbon use we will burn the one trillionth tonne by 2040.

Our challenge is to forestall that trillionth tonne for several hundred years until the environment has had time to accommodate

the carbon in the atmosphere.

To do so each and every one of us will have to cut way back on our use of fossil fuels. Until industry, with encouragement from governments, begins to provide us with more sustainable fuels, certain activities such as home heating can undergo little change.

However, other factors, such as the amount we travel, whether we buy locally produced food and other items, and how much new “stuff ” we purchase, are optional and can be reduced.

I’m not saying that we all need to do as SFU Professor Mark Jarkard suggested “everyone needs to stop burning fossil fuels”.

However, all those places that we like to travel to and the things we like to buy, have a new price tag which is being charged to our children and grand children’s future.

If each of us could cut our optional use of fossil fuels in half, it would make a big difference and it would send a message to our politicians that they need to get serious about climate change.

I saw a bumper sticker many years ago that said “When the people lead the leaders will follow”.

For those who would like to learn more about a global movement of people who are working on this challenging issue, the Alberni Valley Transition Town Society is showing the film Transition 201 on Wednesday Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at Char’s Landing.S

City hits senior in pocket book

To the Editor,Is there anyone else

as upset as I am over such a large increase in utility bills?

As seniors in our own small home, I wonder how we seniors will pay the extra cost?

I understand that at the meeting of city council where the decision was made regarding the increase, one councillor suggested that such an increase would be difficult for anyone on a low income — like seniors.

Why do I get the feeling that we are second class citizens?

Canadian funds fight diseases

To the Editor,At the recent

gathering of world leaders at the United Nations, the health of the world’s citizens was a key concern.

Currently, HIV, TB and malaria claim more than three million lives a year, and afflict the health of hundreds of millions of others.

Each year 600,000 children under the age of five die from malaria, while TB creates 10 million orphans and takes 1.4 million lives.

The global economic impact of these diseases is in the hundreds of billions of dollars, dwarfing the efforts of all foreign aid.

The Global Fund to Fight HIV, Malaria, and TB was created to combat these three scourges, and has treated 9.7 million people for TB since 2002. They are due for funding replenishment, and have announced that their funding gap for the next three years is $15 billion.

At the G-8 summit in 2010, the Harper government laudably committed to providing $1.1 billion in new funding to

help. Because

these diseases disproportionally strike women and children, a large portion of that increase was invested in the Global Fund.

Canada’s share now needed to meet this funding shortfall is 250 million a year over the next three years, or .001 percent of our federal Budget.

Mr. Harper has to show that improving child and maternal health are important to his government, and the Global Fund is the best way to make that a reality.

Nathaniel Poole,Victoria, B.C.

Canadian funds fight diseases

More and more Canadian politicians at all levels are missing in action these days.

Ottawa has another prorogue. Victoria has no fall sitting at the BC Legislature. BC’s municipal governments shut down for a week in mid-September.

With governments all grabbing at one taxpayer, it’s difficult for us to say who is the lesser of three evils.

From / 8As it turns out,

there are agricultural pesticides that may be harmful to bees. The David Suzuki Foundation is part of an effort to get one of them banned in Canada. The problem is, it’s not Roundup, and it’s got nothing to do with genetic engineering.

They’re called “neonicotinoids,” because they’re similar to nicotine. Old sheep farmers

may recall using a crude version: tobacco soaked in water to kill insects on sheep.

It’s ironic that as the “information age” accelerates, our society, overwhelmed by conflicting messages, slips back towards superstition.

How essential are supplements?Do you

sometimes wonder if

you are getting all of the vitamins and minerals that your body needs daily to be healthy?

There’s a lot of claims in the media about certain nutrients and what great things they can do for you. This may get you thinking that your diet isn’t quite

cutting it. The best way to

get the vitamins and minerals is by eating a wide variety of healthy foods.

A supplement can’t make up for unhealthy eating habits. There’s lots of evidence to suggest that many people are not getting their recommended amount of vegetables and fruits. This habit will shortchange the diet of folate (a B vitamin), vitamins C and A, potassium and magnesium, plus many beneficial phytochemicals (that give the plant it’s colour and antioxidant-protective qualities), such as beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene.

Plant foods give the body more than just vitamins and minerals.

Fibre, phytochemicals, antioxidants and naturally occurring fluid are some examples of these healthful components that are just not available through pills or powders. Therefore, adjusting eating habits to increase intake of vegetables and fruits is a good first step to improving general health.

Occasionally, people who have healthy eating habits find it hard to get all the

vegetables, fruits and other healthy foods they require daily. A supplement may help fill in the gaps, but shouldn’t be used instead of eating well or as an excuse to routinely run on ‘junk’ and highly processed fast foods. If you decide to take a ‘one a day’ vitamin/mineral supplement, keep in mind it only serves to reinforce a healthy diet, not replace it.

There are some circumstances in which a daily multivitamin/mineral supplement may be required in certain individuals, such as:

• Women who are pregnant or breast-feeding.

• Individuals who are sick, injured, recovering from surgery, elderly, or who have one or many long-term health problems.

• People who eat a calorie-restricted diet, which does not provide adequate volume of food to offer all of the important vitamins and minerals.

• People who don’t eat a variety of foods, such as those who have food allergies or people who eat a vegetarian diet.

In addition, if a blood test shows that your body is low in a certain nutrient

(eg. iron, vitamin B12, or Vitamin D) a supplement will be recommended to normalize your body’s stores.

Bone building nutrients

To maintain strong bones, it’s suggested that foods rich in calcium and vitamin D are eaten, plus for many people, a daily multivitamin/mineral will offer a minimum requirement for vitamin D (sunshine vitamin).

What should you look for when you pick a supplement?

• Choose one that provides a variety of vitamins and minerals (a multi) rather than a supplement that provides only a single vitamin or mineral (unless your health care professional has recommended an individual vitamin or mineral for your specific case).

• Pick a multivitamin/mineral supplement that, along with the foods you eat, provides the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for each vitamin and mineral. Supplements that provide a lot more than the RDA can cause health problems/toxicities and nutrient imbalances. This is especially important

for minerals and the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. These are stored more easily in the body, and they can build up to dangerous levels.

• Check the expiry date. Ensure the supplement’s date is after the time that you intend to finish all of the product.

• Ensure that the supplement you buy has the Natural Product Number (NPN) or a Drug Identification Number (DIN). This means that it meets Health Canada’s standards for safety, quality, and health claims.

• For those with allergies, be aware that many supplements may contain other ingredients, such as wheat, corn, eggs or gelatin. Check the label.

Additional Considerations when choosing a multivitamin/mineral supplement:

• A generic brand (or store brand) often works just as well as a name brand supplement.

Look for generic brands that contain the same amount of vitamins and minerals as the name brand.

Catalyst transferslagoon

The long road that was the city’s pursuit of acquiring a new lagoon and land from Catalyst Paper Corp. is over.

The city handed Catalyst a $5 million cheque on Wednesday to finalize the deal. A final $750,000 payment is due next year. The city will also not raise Catalyst’s taxes for another five years.

Land transfer for a city road will take place next year.

The lagoon is located near the Sproat Lake bird sanctuary, and sits on land owned by the Port Alberni Port Authority.

The city can now tap the $11 million federal gas tax grant it announced in January to complete further work.

The city has to complete various upgrades. And public consultation with local First Nations is in the works, he said.

Catalyst has agreed to remove sludge from the bottom of the lagoon at no cost to city.

When completed next year, the new facility will be ready to meet new stringent federal and provincial effluent standards.

School participates with SD 70

From / 7The school is

located in a portable next to Alberni Elementary school, which provides a French immersion program, and they share a common playground and field.

The Francophone school has two teachers, two teacher aides and shares the principal with the Francophone school in Nanaimo. Grands-Cèdres previously offered a Grade 5 and 6 class, but now when students finish Grade 4, most go to one of the French immersion schools in SD 70. Even though Grands-Cèdres is a small school, Bedard said students are afforded the same opportunities as any elementary school.

“We go on field trips, we have special guests and presentations and we bus the children to Nanaimo if there is a show at the Francophone school there. We also participate in some things with the elementary school next door.”

5065 ROGER STREET, PORT ALBERNI, BC V9Y 3Y9

Thank you Ambassadors! The staff at the Alberni Valley

Chamber of Commerce are pleased to send out our ‘THANKS’ for a wonderful job, albeit unpaid one, done all summer long by more than 40 volunteers. Our Volunteers; otherwise known as AMBASSA-DORS, have assisted not only us, but each of you, in welcoming visitors to the entire region. On a typical day 4 Ambassadors will travel to Cathedral Grove to work in the Park, and another 2 will jump onboard the MV Francis Barkley. Yet another will come in to our office to help support our Visitor Centre Staff in their daily functions.

Our Ambassadors this summer have talked with thousands of people throughout these venues and also at special events such as the Cruise Ship appearance on May 22nd as well as the Canada Day Parade.

While we cannot possibly predict how much money is spent in the area because of the information provided by our Ambassadors it is a significant amount. If you run a business in Port Alberni be it tourist related, or not, you are for certain seeing the impact of the commitment of our Ambassadors.

When next you drive through the park on a busy summer afternoon take that extra minute and look for those yellow jackets. Undoubtedly they will be talking to someone about something. And guaran-teed; that something, is Alberni Valley related. When you stop by the Harbour Quay on a beautiful evening, take a look at that ship coming in to port. You’ll see our

“Yellow Jackets” onboard and you’ll also see that they are taking the time to guide people to the exit points, advising them where to find their luggage etc. and of course they are giving them ideas on where to go for the dinner of their choice or where to stay in the community. Our Ambassadors have been known to drive guests of the Francis Barkley to their hotel destination.

Moving forward our Ambassador program is set to expand in 2014. We have secured financial support for additional uniforms next year through the generosity of Tim Hor-ton’s here in Port Alberni (Thanks Stefanie) and we have a wonderful plan in the works with the fine folks at Community Futures, who in turn recognize the impact on business

through the efforts of our volunteer Ambassadors. Other businesses have stepped forward this year for our YE event including: Tim Horton’s & Community Futures again, Steampunk Café, Serious Coffee, Chase and Warren Estate Winery, Gayle’s Fashions, Boston Pizza, Jowsey’s Furniture, Lady Rose Marine Services and Stirling Shores Vacation Resort.

This year we’d like to acknowl-edge three key people to our pro-gram: Ms. Rosie Debbert wins our award as Ambassador of the Year – Cathedral Grove; Dewayne Parfitt is acknowledged as Ambassador of the Year – Francis Barkley and our overall Ambassador of the Year is Gerry Fagan who without his ongo-ing commitment and support this program simply would not be.

The future of our program looks promising with the partnerships we are building. We hope to see more people involved next year and we plan to advise the community in the coming months of the growth ideas being considered.

In the meantime…..if you love Port Alberni and if you have the odd day to spare between early June and mid-September then please do contact us at the Cham-ber of Commerce. We’d love to include your passion on our team.

~ Bill, Deb, Jolleen, Jag, Mychaela & Robert

Book planned about Alberni aboriginal carver

WAWMEESHG. HAMILTON

Alberni VAlley news

A local artist is planning to write a book

about one of Port Alberni’s most well known Aboriginal Carvers.

Nelson Joseph was a member of the Hupacasath First Nation, and died in 1997.

He spent his life in the Alberni Valley, living in his trademark purple house on River Road.

Local Aboriginal artist Rod Sayers also grew up in the Alberni Valley.

He grew up knowing of Joseph’s work, which included plaques, paddles, small totems, rattles and jewellery boxes, all carved from cedar and finished with his trademark brown polish.

“It was distinctive and collected far and wide,” Sayers said.

Joseph, who was one of seven children, was born into a family of carvers.

His late father carved, and his brother Stewart was a wood carver as well until his health prevented him from doing so.

Joseph’s carvings were often sold by the former Greenwood Hotel, which was frequented by visitors

from across the world, one family member said.

Sayers has embarked on a project that, if it comes to fruition, will see a book produced that will showcase Joseph’s works and chronicle the life of

the man who created them.

Sayers is in the process of collecting carvings and documenting stories about Joseph, who was also affectionately known as Trainer.

He’s also working

with staff at the Alberni Valley Museum on another project. “We hope to exhibit a large body of work at the museum,” said Sayers. He hopes the exhibit can be unveiled in 2014.

Joseph was an early influence of Sayers, who said he used him walking along River Road with his carvings. “Everywhere I went there seemed to be carvings by Nelson,” Sayers said.

Joseph died without ever having had a formal exhibition of his work, Sayers said. “But it’s important to document his work and its contribution to the history of the Hupacasath people and to the Alberni Valley,” he said.

Anyone willing to share Joseph’s work from their private collections to assist with the project can contact Sayers at [email protected].

Basketball / Unity hoops launches. A26SPORTSNCN signs pro rugby deal

WAWMEESHG. HAMILTON

ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS

A passion for sport and tensile steel toughness has taken a Nuuchahnulth man from the rugby fields in Victoria to playing pro in Wales.

Phil Mack, 27, a member of the Toquaht First Nation on the West Coast, is playing scrum half for the Ospreys of Swansea. He signed a contract to play earlier this fall.

The Ospreys play in RaboDirect Pro 12, which his home to many of the world’s best rugby clubs and top flight players.

“This is the first time I have been looked at or been in search of a professional job,” said Mack from Wales. “I’m extremely excited that it turned out to be the Ospreys given the caliber of play. It is a proud moment and I’m going to work hard and just try and contribute as best I can.”

Mack is one of three siblings and grew up in Victoria. His late father Sid was Nuuchahnulth, and his mother Janine is Lebanese.

He started playing rugby at age 16 while a student at Oak Bay High School, where he was a stand out scrum half. He played for the University of Victoria after graduating from high school.

In four years with UVIC Mack played nationally and internationally

for Canada played 19 times — 14 of them capped. He is a former captain of the National Sevens team, and has played in the Pacific Nations Cup and in the Rugby World Cup qualifiers. “Rugby has taken me all over the world and have played in each continent,” Mack said.

He’s been a member of Canada’s national team since 2007. And he was part of a gold medal team in the Pan American Games in 2012.

“Phil was a very exciting player for us, he won us many games on individual effort,” said UVic

head coach Doug Tate. “He’s a very talented offensive and defensive player. He plays at 100 miles per-

hour and with a lot of passion.”

Other Aboriginals have also played top flight rugby, Mack said. “Bob Ross and Rod Snow played at the senior level,” he said.

Ross is a former Canadian National rugby player who earned 58 caps for Canada, and was twice named captain twice. Snow played the prop position and earned 62 caps for Canada from 1995 to 2007. He also played professionally for Barbarian FC in England and for the Dragons in Newport, South Wales.

Rugby teaches intangible skills that transcend the game, Mack said. “It teaches you respect, commitment and how to work for what you want,” he said. Mack is percolating the idea of an Aboriginal seven’s rugby team when he returns.

Charity hoops game promises to be slam dunkWAWMEESH

G. HAMILTONAlberni VAlley news

The basketball season is a few months

away yet but the balls will be bouncing and the runners will be screeching on the floor Friday night at the Alberni Athletic Hall.

The event will see a celebrity basketball game, honouring of two great Alberni hoops teams of the past, and the unveiling of an after-school program.

“We’re going to have a lot of fun, I promise you that,” Jericho Road Church youth pastor Harold ‘Lefty’ Williams said.

“We’re going to honour the past and do something for the youth, who are our

future.”The long awaited

Unity Celebrity Game tips off at 6 p.m.

The game will pit a team of professional athletes and entertainers against a team of Port Alberni all stars from the RCMP, school and local media.

Actors Paige Hurd and Sam Sarpon, pro football player Frank Murphy, former Washington General Kashon Cooke, and NBA development player Bryson McKenzie are just some of the names who will be in town to participate in the event.

“It’s going to be a great game, and we’re going to have a bit of ‘Globetrotter’ fun too,” Williams said. “The Port Alberni team is going to use

muscles they haven’t used in 20 years.”

Two Port Alberni basketball teams that won national men’s championships in 1955 and 1965 will be honoured as well, Williams said.

There has been a resurgence in Alberni basketball but it’s important to acknowledge the Valley’s hoops past, Williams said.

“You can’t have a future without a past,” he said.

Ticket sales have been brisk, Williams said. All proceeds from the event will be donated to KidSport and ADSS athletics, Williams said.

Surplus funds will be doled out by a special board, he added.

Dave Ralla’s Blue Thunder team is still undefeated in the Port Alberni Ladies Basketball League.

Action continued in the league on Tuesday night.

In the first game, Ralla’s Yellow Lightening squared off against the Mace Electric Shockers.

The teams were evenly matched but the Lightning went on a run in the second half and won the game 59-39.

The second game of the night pitted the Mace Electric Phoenixes against Ralla’s Blue Thunder.

It was a tight game throughout, but the Thunder hung on to beat the Phoenixes 48-42.
