◆ COVER STORY
City’s local Angel gives backKATYA SLEPIAN
ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Most kids don’t get their dream
job right out of high school but then again, most kids aren’t as determined as Angel Magnussen.
“She’s always known that’s what she wanted to do, spend her life helping sick kids,” says Cheryl Magnussen, Angel’s mom, “and this is really cool, to actually have that realized so young.”
Angel, 18, took that passion and founded Hugginz by Angel, a non-profit company dedicated to sewing blankets for sick children and children with special needs all over North America. Being in and out of hospital as a result of complications to do with Down Syndrome, she knows what it’s like and wants to help out as much as she can.
While Angel never gets to meet the majority of the children she helps, the parents will send her photos of children with their blankets and stories about how the blankets have helped. But the most important thing to Angel is the knowledge that she’s helped.
“To her it doesn’t matter [if] she doesn’t get to meet all those other kids. What matters is that those kids get their blankets and they get well. She really believes that those blankets will help them get well and she stuffs them right to the brim with love.”
Cheryl applied to
Telus’s “Give Where We Live” campaign in June and within a week the company had gotten back to them with the good news; they’d been chosen for the campaign. In the weeks that followed, Telus cameras followed them everywhere, from Port Alberni to Vancouver, and met the families that Angel had helped.
And then one day Telus had another surprise for the Magnussens.
“They sent us away one afternoon for a few hours… and then came down the road with us and everybody was here and it was happening. That was really cool.”
Angel and Cheryl came back to a brand new studio sitting on the front lawn of their house. While it’s not quite finished yet,
they’re hoping to get a few little amenities put in as soon as the studio gets moved to its permanent spot on their property, later this month.
“We don’t have power yet, we don’t have any lights yet so we’re going to get the lighting put in here [so she can] work here in the evening. We have four different working stations, lots of storage and this is the station for cutting the material and getting things set up, which is great.”
Angel gets close to a dozen requests a day so to keep organized, Cheryl wants to use the iPad they were given by Telus and hook it up to a monitor and a keyboard to stay on top of all the work.
And there’s a lot of work: in addition to making the blankets,
Angel also paints pictures.
“She’ll be selling the prints in her online store once that gets open and the original paintings will be going to charities or families in need.”
Between auctioning off the blankets, paintings and all of the other charity work Angel’s done over the years, she’s raised more than $270,000 and raring to do more.
“Things have been a little slow for her because she’s been having all those surgeries lately so it’s been a little bit tougher for her lately, but by mid-August we’ll have an open house for the public [with] a big barbecue,” Cheryl said.
“She was in the hospital for her graduation so she missed the
ceremony...[at the] open house we’ll do a little graduation ceremony and she’ll get to wear her cap and gown and we’ll get someone to come officiate so she feels like she still has a graduation ceremony.
“Her friends who all graduated will all come over with their caps and gowns on too and they can do their own little mini ceremony.”
Angel will also be
giving sewing lessons to anyone willing to learn, and to help out.
“We’ll be putting our open sign out on the street and putting announcements on Facebook every day, which times it’s open so we can start tackling the list,” Cheryl said.
They welcome anyone who would like to come and sew regularly, and have other non-sewing tasks available for
people simply wanting to volunteer, she added.
“This is a huge step forward and she’ll be able to help so many more people.”

Bench upgrade neededKATYA SLEPIAN
ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
There’s not enough benches along
Johnston Road, Councillor Cindy Sol-da told city council on Monday night.
“We do have a lot of benches, espe-cially down at the Harbour Quay, but we still need to add more benches on the Johnston Road corri-
dor,” said Councillor Solda,
“A lot of the mer-chants [there] have said that there’s no place to sit.
According to City Engineer Guy Cicon, the city currently has 42 benches from a contract with Bus Stop Ads.
The benches serve a dual purpose; rais-ing revenue from the advertising on the back of the benches
and also improving the accessibility of the city.
The merchants along Johnston Road have also decried the lack of garbage cans there and blame it for the garbage in the grass along the road.
“We only have three garbage cans on [the north] side [of Johnston Road] and that’s why you see garbage lying
there.” said Council-lor Solda.
She expects to raise the issue at the next city council meeting on Aug. 11th where she’s hoping to get approval for 10 garbage cans along Johnston Road, following the results of a report scheduled to come back to council that day.

Better cycling route and more bicycle
racks are among the cycling ameni-ties that need to be implemented in Port Alberni, according to city councillors.
The Active Trans-portation Plan, presented to council by City Engineer Guy Cicon, emphasized residents’ desire for better cycling and pedestrian ameni-ties.
“The report out-lines the benefi ts of a town that’s more easily walkable and
cycleable,” said Cicon.
“There’s econom-ic benefi ts, there’s quality of life ben-efi ts and of course health benefi ts.”
While in favour of making the city more bike-friendly, Coun-cillor Jack McLeman had his reservations about methods used in some other cities.
“To me, if we were to just put a lot of lines on the road to say that this is a bike lane my experience with those is that they’re deadly and dangerous because cyclists get the idea that there’s an invis-ible wall and they can’t be hit while
they’re in there.”He would prefer to
go the same route as Nanaimo.
“[They have] a fairly decent cycling system where it’s not that much on the roads and a large part of it is on trails, which I like better.”
Citing a need for a place for cyclists to park their bicycles, councillor Wendy Kerr asked for a review of current bike parking at city facilities.
Adding bike park-ing as a requirement of any new develop-ments in Port Alber-ni may be in order, she said.
City staff were directed to provide reports with regards to both issues for subsequent meet-ings.

‘Yes, I’m having a baby’: MinionsMUNICIPAL ELECTION: | Council candidate Sharie Marie Minions addresses critics, says pregnancy, politics not mutually exclusive.
KATYA SLEPIANALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
While Sharie Marie Minions isn’t thrilled to have her pregnancy brought up while she runs for council, she’s glad to get the issue out of the way early on.
“I’ve been expecting someone to say something negative,” she said, and it finally happened when a man she didn’t know approached and said she should spend time with her kids rather than running for
council.“So I just posted
that little message on [Facebook] to address it now for people who don’t know that I’m pregnant, rather than keep waiting for people to bring it up.”
Running for council won’t be the first time that Minions takes on additional responsibilities while pregnant; she had her biggest growth year as a mortgage broker the year she gave birth to her daughter, now two years old. She was able to do so, in part,
due to the help of her husband.
“Every family’s different but my husband and I have certainly shared all of the responsibilities in raising our daughter and that’s how we’ll raise our next baby as well. It’s certainly not more my responsibility than his so I really don’t think that anybody should consider it to be more of an issue for a pregnant woman running for council than for a man who has a pregnant wife.”
It’s that double standard that Minions is concerned about.
“The big problem with me with being asked that question [is that] I really honestly feel that if my husband were running for council no one would even bring it up because they would see it as more my issue than his, whereas because I’m a woman it’s seen as I’m the one who’s having the baby.”
Though she wishes it wasn’t an issue in 2014, she’s thrilled that the response from city residents has been incredibly positive.
“[This] has brought a lot of positivity to
the issue and I’ve had people call me
and ask me how they can help spread the
message and people just call me and leave messages and send personal Facebook messages encouraging me and saying how great they think it is that I am doing this now.”
Minions, who is due in October, is also hoping that if she gets elected to council she can make a difference in how working mothers are viewed.
“A big part of the reason I’m running is my daughter and our baby on the way [because] I want them to be able to make their lives in Port Alberni and I want [it] to grow for that to happen. I think [this] will help people realize that it’s completely fine for someone to be a mother and work and vice versa for a man.”[email protected]

When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.
“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”
Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheel-in shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.
I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”
Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.
The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

Young pros take up garden hoesKATYA SLEPIAN
ALBERNI VALLEY NEWS
Something delicious is growing in Port
Alberni and the Young Professionals of Port Alberni (YPAV) might be behind it.
Inspired by the Young Professionals of Nanaimo, the group decided to take on a community garden as one of their inaugural projects.
“We wanted to provide [a garden] for the community,” says YPAV member Sharie Marie Minions, “we want it to be a community space so we have plans to run community gardening classes. One of the members of our group, Janette Cormier, is an herbalist so she’s going to teach classes on that.”
While the group will be charging for
individual boxes, they want to plant blackberry bushes along the edges of the fence so even those without access to the garden can enjoy it.
“We’ll actually have a lot of crops there that will be for anyone to come and pick [because] we want to keep it as much a community feel as possible.”
The garden is already green with new growth and there are some green tomatoes showing up but there’s still lots of work to be done.
“We have another work party for our group and anyone else in the community who wants to come help on August 10, because we’re planning on building a little garden shed and other stuff like that as well.”
Despite the work ahead, Minions is happy with the
progress so far.“We do have more
plans to expand it but we’ve got it to a workable state and we’re going to just keep going slowly on it from there.”
Meanwhle, another group is also vying for a community garden.
A community garden would help feed Port Alberni’s less fortunate and supply its soup kitchen and
foodbank with food, Ubuntu Port Alberni spokesperson Dan Cebuliak said.
Cebuliak plans to approach Port Alberni city council about the idea at future meeting.
Cebuliak says he has identified land in both the city and School District 70 inventories for a garden.
A tract of land behind the old Alberni District Secondary
School is one of the pieces of property Cebuliak will be approaching school board officials about the project.
“The amount of food grown locally could be phenominal given the amount of land that is available,” he said.
If his request is successful, volunteers would prepare the land. Afterward, they’d dedicate three
to five hours a week each to grow produce which would be used to supply the food bank, soup kitchen as well as to people living in low incomes, Cebuliak said.
“We’d sell a portion of it to at nominal prices to generate revenue which would be put back in the program.”
Cebuliak is a member of Ubuntu,
a South Africa based organization with autonomous chapters around the world. Ubuntu promotes people working together to address food, water, energy and housing initiatives.
The Port Alberni chapter has 12 members and started in February, Seduliak said.

V ICTORIA – A recent column on the B.C. government’s
decision to raise speed limits on portions of rural highways excited numerous comments from readers.
Some questioned my suggestion that today’s new drivers are worse because they spend their formative years staring at screens in the back seat instead of looking out the window and grasping the grim physics of the real world.
There is no doubt that B.C.’s graduated licensing system for new drivers is more difficult than what my generation faced. Those vehicle stickers with the “L” (for learner, or as teens prefer “loser”) and “N” (for novice, or in teen-speak “nerd”) have been around since 1998. The two steps make getting a full driver’s licence a longer, more
difficult and expensive process.
Statistics provided by ICBC show what new drivers are up against.
First there is the written “knowledge test” to obtain a learner’s permit. From 2004 to 2008, more than half of applicants failed in their first attempt. Things improved in subsequent years, with a 46-per-cent failure rate in 2009 declining to 42 per cent by 2013.
The first road test is required to go from “L” to “N” and it seems sufficiently harsh. The failure rate has been consistently around 47 per cent in the past six years. More practice and another $35 are required to try again.
Students fare better on the second road test, where the failure rate has consistently been 21-22 per cent for the past decade.
ICBC reports that in
the first three years of the graduated licence program, the new driver crash rate dropped by 16 per cent.
In 2003 the required learner and novice period were extended, and restrictions on the novice stage were increased. New driver crashes fell by another 28 per cent.
Those restrictions include the number of passengers and a “zero tolerance” for alcohol.
Impaired crash and injury statistics aren’t available for drivers in the graduated
licence program, only fatalities.
They grew as more new drivers were enrolled in the new system, to a high of 24 in 2007, but that number declined to 14 by 2012.
There will always be young people who drive impaired, speed or make
other fatal errors. But it’s difficult to argue
that today’s system in B.C. is lenient.
A couple of readers were concerned about the effect of higher rural speed limits on older drivers. One suggested that higher limits on rural highways are a poor mix with vacationing seniors hauling around oversized motorhomes, trailers and boats.
Another cited the coming wave of retired baby boomers and added a likely increase in marijuana-impaired drivers, all emboldened by the invitation to drive faster.
B.C.’s medical health officers issued a letter denouncing the decision by Transportation Minister Todd Stone to raise speed limits. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall said the research is clear that higher speeds increase the risk and severity of incidents.
Then there is the government’s own position.

Tax revenue up in smoke
The proliferation of contraband tobacco in Canada is nothing new, but it’s often an overlooked crime in the public realm.
It’s no surprise to smokers, but tax revenue on legally purchased cigarettes has been steadily rising for the past few decades with an average pack now costing $10. Advocates like the B.C. chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society say the increased cost is a win-win, as it boosts government revenue while incentivizing more people to quit the destructive habit because of prohibitive cost.
Kathryn Seely, the non-profit organization’s chief advocate for healthy public policies, told the Vancouver Sun in 2013 that higher prices can be particularly effective in quashing youth smoking.
Yet it appears more people are finding alternative ways to satisfy their nicotine habit by avoiding government gatekeeping altogether.
An analysis of hundreds of cigarette butts at five sites in Victoria and Saanich found up to 25 per cent were contraband, or illegal products. Finding a thrifty supplier seems to be the easy part, according to Andrew Klukas, president of the Western Convenience Stores Association, who conducted the analysis.
Klukas also pointed out 22 per cent of cigarette butts collected at Vic High were classified as contraband, which suggests teens are finding ways to avoid expensive legal cigarettes in favour of illegal products as well. A baggie of 200 cigarettes can sometimes cost only $10, Klukas said.
Klukas and his colleagues have a vested interest in locals purchasing cigarettes from their retailers, but the research suggests the B.C. government may be losing $120 million a year in tax revenue to illegal tobacco dealings. That’s money going into the pockets of organized crime. The issue needs renewed focus from both federal and provincial governments.

Summer is a time for visiting with friends and family, maybe even traveling and exploring new places and meeting new people. How refreshing this can be! Just think, God, gave us the heritage of rest (Sab-bath). May I suggest that we don’t squander this time but take time to ponder His Love and Grace to us through Jesus. It only takes two (2) minutes a day to stop and re ect…. “let us therefore make every effort to enter that rest” Hebrews 4:11

Mailbag: Feedback on warm welcomes and hard farewells
Racers loved warm welcome
To the Editor,My name is Mike
McLellan. I race a Formula 1 Tunnel Boat on the Prop F1 Series down in the United States.
My race team was fortunate enough to be invited to attend the Alberni Valley Regatta last weekend. I have raced boats all over North America for a lot of years. We have never, ever, ever, anywhere, ever been as warmly welcomed and received as we were in Port Alberni last weekend.
People would come up to us on the street, in restaurants, everywhere. We heard comments like “welcome to Port Alberni” or “thanks for coming to the regatta and supporting it”. Another popular one was, “Welcome! Enjoy your stay here”.
In fact on two occasions we were having the conversation amongst ourselves, talking about this happening so much, and somebody would come up and interrupt us with another warm, welcome.
On behalf of myself and the entire race team we wanted to thank the great people
of Port Alberni for the warmest welcome anywhere, and for putting on such a great event.
We sincerely hope to be invited back again.

Museums want waterbomber
To the Editor,Re: Bring back our
bomber, July 24.In 2007 Rollie Back,
president and CEO of the BC Aviation Council, Gil Pascal, board chair of the Glenn L. Martin Maryland Aviation Museum and I had the resources to create two museums featuring the Martin Mars waterbombers.
We were going to cross-market one another. One was going to be located in Port Alberni and the other in Maryland, in the community where the planes were built.
Jimmy Buffet was on board to help raise funds. Articles appeared in the New York Times and Washington Post. People from all over North America were flying high with excitement.
Both museums would have been known worldwide as destinations for this historic aircraft.
Evergreen Aviation in McMinnville, Oregon offered to share corporate knowledge on all their successes with their aviation displays that include the famous Spruce Goose. Experts were utilized to help prove that this was the best possible option for the Mars waterbombers.
Some time back in history the Mars were put at the bottom of the call out list for Forest Service managed fires. Conair and many other smaller heli and airplane operators were called out or even put on retainers to be available. Not the Mars.
In fact, in the days when they did regular fire patrol flights either with the Mars or the Goose, even when they discovered a new fire that they could have immediately extinguished, if it wasn’t on their property, they had to call the Forest Service and they would call out the competition. I offered facts on how the technology was being phased out, and how the aircraft were being made obsolete by the US government.
It’s all still happening today. My motivation then was fear our community would end
up losing the Mars forever, as it appears will happen, so the least Coulson should do is offer what he can to the Glenn L. Martin Aviation Museum who would appreciate the aircraft forever.

Stop education ‘epidemic’
To the Editor,Teachers’ greed is
spreading like summer wildfires. B.C. is not the only province dealing with teacher negotiations.
The last signed teachers contract in Newfoundland expired on August 31, 2012. The Newfoundland government and the Newfoundland Teachers Federation have been negotiating ever since, now at 24 months. Talks have expired as both sides are too far apart and mediation is out of the question.
The last signed contract in Saskatchewan expired on August 31, 2013. The Saskatchewan teachers federation has negotiated two contracts with the Saskatchewan government, since then, advising the Saskatchewan teachers to vote yes on the contract
proposals. Both times, the teachers ignored the federation’s request.
The epidemic of this “teachers’ greed” must stop or students will not be reporting for school in September in B.C., Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland.

Harper hurting Canada’s rep
To the Editor,By choosing to be a
narrow-minded vocal cheerleader for the Israeli government, Stephen Harper has done Canada’s international reputation a huge disservice.
All his ‘bobbleheading’ ministers are marching in regimented lockstep behind him because they are afraid to do otherwise.
Unfortunately, self-effacing diplomacy is not Stephen Harper’s style. For him politics is war and scoring political points with his core conservative supporters is more important than preserving Canada’s once proud reputation for being an honest peace broker.

From / xxThat position was
articulated in a road safety strategy released last year by Attorney General Suzanne Anton.
“Research is conclusive that at higher speeds, more people are killed and injured in the traffic system,” it states.
“At lower speeds, fewer are killed and injured as a direct result of the safety buffer that lowered speeds create.”
The strategy notes that new technologies
such as adaptive cruise control are becoming available. B.C. is also testing electronic highway speed limit signs that change with weather and traffic conditions.
Next comes self-driving vehicle systems, so drivers will be able to check their smart phones again.

Safety Tip:Crashes involving driver fatigue peak in the summer, due in part to hot weather and long road trips. Get enough rest before you head out. If you feel drowsy, pull over safely and take a nap. The
only cure for drowsiness is sleep – it’s better to arrive late than not at all.
Question of the WeekThe posted speed limit has been raised by 10 km/h on many major highways in B.C. If you have driven some of those stretches, have you found cars passing you beyond the raised limit?

Challenged by one Hellcat of a muscle carPortland, Oregon – Do I take the red key or the black key?The black key limits horsepower to 500. Jaws drop. If you put it in valet mode, rpms are limited to 4,000. Gosh, I really hope I can take the red key…This Matrix-like conundrum is a good one to have. Take the safer route (black key) if you’d rather ease off on harness-ng the gargantuan horsepower of the 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat. It’s the most powerful production Chrysler V8, as well as the most powerful produc-tion muscle car to date, so it needs to be treated with respect. But then again, the red key will allow me to tame this muscled feline one shift at a time, whether through the 6-speed manual or an 8-speed auto-matic.Looks like the decision has been made for me. Red key is sitting pretty in the centre console. And it’s in track mode. Electronic intervention is minimal. I
have access to all 707 horsepower and I’m at the Portland International Race-way. I’d say this will be a heavenly day. With a new look on the inside and outside, the 2015 Dodge Challenger is ready to take on its Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro competition head-on.According to market research, two thirds of Challenger buyers say they don’t cross-shop anything else. That said, those who did cross-shop, and decided to go in another direction, attributed it to its archaic interior. That problem is no more. Now Challengers come with a driv-er-centric and cool-looking interior setup. Whether you have the standard 5-inch touchscreen or the optional 8.4-inch (the biggest touchscreen in its segment), you can’t lose. Then there’s a new 7-inch multi-view driver informa-tion display instrument cluster that adds to the chic execution; standard
on all models. Not to mention, it displays all the vital stats that you’ll need when driving.Combined with physical buttons – for those who don’t like to control everything by a screen – its evolutionary changes certainly help its cause. A lot.But the heart of the Chal-lenger lies underneath its sheet metal – the curves and edges that were inspired by the ’71 Challenger. When it comes to engine choices, you’re not without options. There are four.
Here’s the skinny: 1) A 3.6L, Pentastar V6 producing 305 horsepower and 268 lb-ft of torque2) A 5.7L, V8 HEMI with 372 horse-power (with the 8-speed automatic) 375 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque with the 6-speed manual3) A 6.4L, V8 HEMI with 485 horse-power and 475 lb-ft of torqueLast but not least,4) A supercharged 6.2L, V8 HEMI with 707 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. All engines except the V6s can be paired with a manual or an automatic. The V6s only come with the 8-speed automatic. Again, no matter what you choose, you’ll come out singing. Back to the road.Having tested all four models – with
different packages – the thing that stood out the most to me is how good of a car it actually is. Even on a quaint suburban drive through a national park where speed limits were posted at 35 mph, I was impressed with its road manners. And considering I had almost 485 horsepower (with the 6.4L engine), it was as docile as a lethargic lion, yet ready to pounce when the opportunity presented itself. Both track time and road time added to the
multi-dimensional admiration for the two-door.Sure, visibility isn’t ideal. The C pillars are huge and cut into sightlines when looking rearward. The rear seats don’t offer a ton of legroom – especially for the individual stuck in the middle – but heck, it does have room for five.Fuel economy, well, you’re not buying this car for its estimated numbers! That’s for sure. But it does offer an emotional experi-ence. It turns heads and is sexy as hell.Even the V6 on the track did a bang up job. And with a starting MSRP of $28,995, the Canadian-built Challenger is up to the task, will kick butts, and take names. All at the same time.Visit www.dodge.ca for more details.

Read this: before it’s too latedriveway
This story could be obsolete in a month as automakers add electrification to exist-ing models and introduce all new models. The market for electric cars or plug-in hybrids is very small but it is growing. The success of Tesla’s Model S has shot its stock price into the stratosphere, as inves-tors bet on that company’s emergence as the electric car and technology leader. The stock price should re-ally reflect the cars sold, as Tesla can only make about 20-25,000 cars annually for a worldwide market. The MarketGreen Car Report recently published a sales report on all electrics sold in Canada for the first six months of the year. The list of vehicles sold is compiled from com-panies’ self-reporting but Ford’s data is missing. This Green Car Report estimates that Ford’s numbers will push overall electric sales to 2,200 for the first half of the year, a 50 percent im-provement over a year ago. What we do get is a good snapshot of the market. With only 1,941 electrics officially counted, amounts to only 0.21 percent of the overall Canadian market-place. (Canadians are on track to buy almost 1.7 mil-lion vehicles this year) So
these are tiny but important numbers and the trend is higher. The clear winner isn’t the Tesla at all; in fact it is in third place behind the Chevy Volt and Nissan LEAF. Chevy sold 831 Volts up to July with Nissan selling 462 LEAFs and Tesla moving 290 Model S cars. The Smart Full Electric Drive comes in fourth with 163 cars sold and in its first month of sales (June) the BMW i3 looks good with 50 units sold. Not all electric cars are the same
What many people don’t realize is the complexity of the electric car market. I look at it this way, if the car can be plugged into an outlet; it is at least partially electrified. There are pure electric cars like the Nissan LEAF, Tesla Model S, Smart Electric, Mitsubishi i-MiEV and BMW’s new i3 – all of these use just electricity to propel the car. Then there are electric cars that have an onboard generator, should the range of the electric pack limit driver’s
intentions. The Chevy Volt, Cadillac ELR, the Toyota Prius Plug-In and the BMW i3 are, or can be equipped, with a gasoline engine to either drive the wheels or charge the battery. This is one area where the Chevy Volt wins. With roughly a 65 km range on pure electricity and a small generator on board to extend the range indefinitely, this car makes a lot of sense. This is why the BMW i3 has an optional generator for $3,000 to extend the range of that model. But if the buyer
chooses this option, the range of pure electric drive is limited because of the added weight of the car. Electric car buyers need to know if they can live with the limits of the electric cars range or want the flexibility to extend the range with an on-board generator. What is still to come?We are living in interesting times. More and more elec-tric cars are being added, not to meet the demand but to meet regulatory require-ments. For the model year
2016, the United States has a new cooperate average fuel economy (CAFE) standard that has each manufacturer trying to hit 35.5 mpg average across their fleet, including small trucks. This isn’t doable with the current internal combustion engine technol-ogy, so these manufacturers are looking to electrification as the answer. Even though more and more electric versions will arrive, don’t expect them to sell. In fact, most car companies don’t expect them to sell at all; they just want the mpg credit towards the new regulations. This might sound cynical but watch how many electric cars will arrive, especially for the 2016 model year, and how many you will actually see on the road. Most are built at a loss, to offset thirstier, gas-loving machines. VerdictEven though electric car sales are very small and many new models will go unnoticed, the trend to electrification is here. With markets like China mandat-ing a percentage of electric
cars to offset its horrific pol-lution, will help move the numbers of electric vehicles worldwide. This, along with steady adoption rates here in North America will help promote better charging in-frastructure. Another factor is the price to own an elec-tric car. The Smart Electric is priced at $27,000 making it the least expensive full electric car. With Nissan hacking its price on the LEAF to just over $31,000 and the Volt starting at roughly $35,000, these cars are more affordable than ever. I think the BMW i3 is very attractive for $45,000 because it is a luxury brand at an attainable price. The real showstopper will be the Tesla Model III that they hope to sell for US$35,000 with more than 400km of electric range when it is introduced in 2017. Even though Tesla has the sex appeal going right now, don’t count out the other mainstream manufactur-ers with decades, if not centuries of auto making knowhow, to take on the [email protected]
The BMW I3 is a luxury brand fully electric car. This high performance model sells for an affordable price.

Valley SENIORS Our writer: Valley Seniors is a monthly feature compiled by Orlando Delano and featuring residents living in Port Alberni
seniors complexes.
Volunteer cooks up warmth at AbbeyfieldIn a few weeks
the residents of Abbeyfield will celebrate the 12th anniversary since it opened its doors to the community.
It has been an interesting process, initiated by founder Terry Whyte and carried out by many
who have been actively involved in supporting this non-profit organization.
The staff have been instrumental to the success of Abbeyfield in the provision of shelter, and home-like environment to dozens of seniors in the Valley, as they
have complied with the philosophical mandate and principles established by the society.
Staff member Jeanette Stacey has has worked in the kitchen since 2002, and is an essential part of the organization’s
success.Born near Hitchin
in Hertfordshire, England, Jeanette worked for local municipal government for 22 years.
Her interest in seniors developed as a volunteer in a care home in Hitchin.
In 1996 she met her future husband Peter, a Canadian school teacher visiting England on his way to Ireland where his family was from.
They soon knew that they wanted to pursue a relationship, and Peter took a leave of absence from his Alberta high school teaching position and came to live with her and teach in England.
They got married in 1998, and within two weeks, the couple were on their way to Edmonton, where Peter resumed his teaching career.
For a while, Jeanette did not have working
papers but soon she enrolled herself as a volunteer at The Good Samaritan Society “I grew to love the work and was fortunate to be taken on in a paid capacity as Care Aid once my permission to work was granted”, she said.
After four years in Alberta, both Peter and Jeanette moved to the BC West Coast, where soon they realized that Port Alberni was a suitable
and very pleasant place to live.
“Soon after arriving in 2002, I heard that a new seniors residence was about to open, so I applied for a position in the kitchen at Abbeyfield,” she sad. “At that time, I had no prior knowledge about the history of Abbeyfield, despite living in England for years where there are many Abbeyfield seniors residences.
She believes that in the Abbeyfield movement each resident lives in community to a more or less degree depending on each individual’s preference.
They receive nutritious meals and can join in with the Abbeyfield activities if they wish. Residents rooms are comfortable and are decorated to their liking.
The kitchen staff support the various special events organized around the calendar activities and residents’ celebrations by catering the needs of those events, which range from anniversaries, open houses to dinners, teas, etc. When asked for highlights of her 12 years, she does not hesitate in stating that the Official Opening of Abbeyfield.

From / 16This was an
unforgettable moment of her time working in this home.
She also adds that the yearly trips to Denman Island by the residents on their three-day summer “vacations”, tops her highlights.
“What a pleasure it
was to see some of the residents who chose to go on “holidays” and change their scenery for a short time”, she said.
Two of the longest residents of Abbeyfield, Muriel Thompson and Bertha Levesque, expressed their appreciation for the job Jeanette has
done in Abbeyfield.“I clearly remember
when I first came to Abbeyfield and I was very nervous and uncertain about my new home,” she said.
“Jeanette made it easy for me to get familiar with the place and made me feel welcome”, Mrs. Thompson. said
“She is a gentle and caring person, always trying to provide a
good service in a pleasant way”, Mrs. Lévesque added.
As Abbeyfield prepares to celebrate another successful year of operation, congratulations go to Jeanette Stacey.
She ensures that the residents enjoy their living conditions in a comfortable home, and for the staff to work in a pleasant environment.

Ubuntu garden differs from others
From / 16The Ubuntu project
would be different from other community gardens ensconced in the Valley. “Ours would be larger in scale,” he said.
Cebuliak said he’s been percolating the idea after a
conversation with Stacie Campon from the Bread of Life. “She said that donations are way down this year and that groceries are getting expensive,” Cebuliak said. [email protected]

THE ARTSTHE ARTSTwins go on adventure at McLean Mill in new children’s storybook
Jacqueline Swann launched her much-anticipated children’s book Chance and Carter Visit McLean Mill last weekend.
Aside from signing copies of her book out at McLean Mill, Swann also read from her book to a group of children gathered in the visitors’ centre.
Chance and Carter Visit McLean Mill is a story about two four year-old boys who go running after a rabbit and find themselves lost in the woods. The story tells the tale of what they did when they became lost.
Swann says the inspiration for this storybook came directly from her grandsons.
“I was visiting McLean Mill about three years ago with my two-year-old twin grandsons and family. The boys saw the rabbits. Then the rabbits were gone into the woods. The story idea came to me as I watched their disappointment.
“That evening I wrote the first
draft of the story. I thought about how to illustrate it. I decided on photos because I wanted to show
the actual mill site,” Swann said.
“I realized the twins couldn’t help with the photos for the
story until they were older. I waited and waited for two whole years. Last August, when the twins were four, I read them the story and asked if they were willing to be in the photos. They co-operated well for their age but Erica Watson, our photographer, did need to take many more photos than the 24 which we used for the story.”
Three months after the photo session she read the first draft of the newly illustrated book and showed it to her grandsons.
“Chance said, ‘but Grandma, that never happened.’
“Carter piped up, ‘We weren’t lost.’ So rest assured that no children were harmed in the making of the book. It is truly a work of fiction.”
The book costs $12 and is available at McLean Mill and also at Swann’s Lida Organic Farm booth at the Spirit Square Farmers’ Market at Harbour Quay on Saturdays.

Art Rave at Rollin too
Art Rave is this weekend and you won’t want to miss any of the festivities that will be held in the Arts District here in the valley. The Rollin Art Centre will be open during regular hours and will hosting a few special guests.
Transportation will be available, free of charge, from Art Rave festivities down Argyle up to Rollin Art Centre. 8 Local painters, Joan Ackerman, Chris Motyka, Cynthia Bonesky, Angie Blake, Pat Nicklin, Pam Turner, Carol Novak and Judy Dixon will be in the gardens during the day showcasing their work while enjoying the afternoon of painting.
The Community Arts Council will be selling ice cream on Saturday, Aug. 2 at the Rollin Art Centre during operating hours as a fundraiser for the arts council.
Local First nations Carver, Jason Titian, will be on site working a new
project, a 12-foot-high totem pole that will be erected in the children’s garden. This has been an ongoing project that first started in the spring with local students from E.J. Dunn and Titian, teaching the art of Aboriginal carving and the history behind it.
The project will continue through the summer months, carving in the garden, and continue into the fall with the students from E.J. Dunn. This project could not have taken place without the generous donations of a 40-foot cedar log by Island Timberlands, the hauling of the log from both Mike Tottingham and Brad Berry and to Dwayne Hearn, Tseshaht forestry manager.
Pool art extended
The deadline to be included in the city’s bid for artwork to grace the walls at Echo Pool has been extended until July 31. All materials will be supplied. Please drop by the Rollin Art Centre or call for more details at 250-724-3412.
Last chance for photo exhibit
This is the last week to catch this colourful showcase of photographs by Cara Baldwin and Kristi Dobson. Their show runs until Aug. 2 and the next opens Aug. 5.
Melissa Martin is the Arts Administrator for the Community Arts Council, at the Rollin Art Centre.
