ALBA offers diverse electives year-round for many majors and areas of interests. You can earn up to 21 quarter / 14 semester credits per each 11-week term. All ALBA elective courses (other than Spanish language classes) are worth 5 quarter credits (3.3-4 semester credits) and are taught in English. Spanish language classes are worth 6-quarter credits (4-semester credits).Nearly all classes are taught at the ALBA facilities located in Barcelona’s city center, in the heart of the Gothic quarter.
“ALBA truly gave me the exact summer experience I was looking for — and more. I met friends that I will stay in touch with forever, had an amazing time traveling on the weekends to visit friends in England and France, and dared to try new things I had never thought of doing before. I felt safe, happy, healthy, and cared for... I really would hate to be the girl that, after a great blog post about her studies, threw in the whole, “studying abroad changed my life” cliché…so I’m not going to say it. But what I will say is that if you do decide to go abroad, don’t just go with a random program:
Study with ALBA.And that will change your life.”

ALBA’s summer study abroad programs in Barcelona are unique in many ways compared to regular quarter and semester programs. Namely, as the entire term takes place in five weeks, students are able to explore and travel Europe for up to seven weeks more without any special visa (90 days are allowed by the Schengen Agreement).
Summer in Barcelona is hot and sunny nearly every day, but with a nice, constant breeze coming off of the Mediterranean Sea. City and beach cafes and restaurants all have their terraces open. ALBA holds classes Monday to Thursday, meaning that you have three-day weekends for our ALBA excursions and independent travel.

In my last fifteen years’ of coaching, I have seen many talented athletes unable to study abroad and remain a collegiate varsity athlete. Keeping up with training is always hard while off campus, and study abroad programs traditionally haven’t offered ways for college athletes to keep in their regiment. This program changes that.
I developed this opportunity with ALBA to allow collegiate student-athletes to experience studying abroad while staying in shape for the season. It is tailored for collegiate soccer players, but athletes from other sports will find that my trainings accomodate their needs as well.
Set in the famous town of Messi, our program incorporates the necessary fitness regime and tracking that high performance sports necessitate. ALBA will take care of your academic and cultural interests, while my training program will keep you in top form.
You can choose from a variety of accredited courses, listed at the end of this catalog, while on the program. Keeping up academically and professionally while abroad means that you’ll return home stronger, faster, and smarter than before.
Mixing sports, academics, and the unique multi-cultural community of Barcelona makes our athletic program a win-win! We’re here to help you every step of the way. I’m excited to offer this to my athletes and sincerely hope that you join us.

ALBA is sponsored and accredited through Portland State University (PSU), one of Oregon’s largest universities. All ALBA faculty, facilities and courses are subject to approval by PSU (and PSU’s own accrediting body). When you enroll with us you are automatically enrolled at PSU and will receive a transcript from PSU when you
complete the program and grades have been processed (usually less than a month after finals). This virtually ensures that other schools will accept the credits – much as if you were enrolled for, say, summer classes at PSU – although you should always get confirmation from your home institution advisor.

I am beyond happy that I studied abroad in Barcelona and I am so grateful that I was able to travel through a program like ALBA! Barcelona is an amazing city. It is large enough to keep you constantly entertained and exploring, yet small enough to feel safe and know your way around. ALBA cares about each and every student and wants him or her to succeed. The teachers are energetic and compassionate and seem to love what they do. I am so lucky to have gotten to live in Barceloneta, a very safe, welcoming and fun neighborhood. Everything you could ever need is at the tips of your fingers. My choice to study abroad with ALBA is one that I will never forget and it pushed me to learn and grow. Exploring Spain has been one of the best experiences of my life and I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is looking to see the world, experience a beautiful culture and make lasting memories!

ALBA STUDY ABROAD | 2016-2017
Barcelona seems to be a country of its own, speaking and following the Catalan way of life regardless of its connections to Spain. I’ve noticed that mentally I now tell people that I am studying in Barcelona, as opposed to the generalized ‘Spain,’ to separate the two in my mind. I’ve been working on learning both Spanish and Catalan, though I feel that Catalan may take some time...
As for my internship, I have been working daily on snapping pictures for social media. The internship does not begin, or cease to end, at any given time: it is a constant process. On these early morning journeys, I have discovered the best road for bakeries, the most underrated tourist shop street, and the best boutiques to window shop. Once arriving at ALBA and conversing with Eloy, the very chatty security guard, I proceed to leap into my classroom with a smile...
Returning to my apartment, I stop at one of the seemingly thousand Super Mercats, where I typically converse as a fake Spaniard with the cashier. I love trying to trick citizens of Barcelona into thinking that I am one of them!
