Dear Board Members:
Subject: Proclamation of "Emergency Medical Services Week" for Public Health Department, Emergency Medical Services
RECOMMENDATION:
1. Approve and authorize the President of Board to sign in original signature two(2) copies of the proclamation of Emergency Medical Services W~ek in Alameda County during the week of May 16 - 20, 2011; and
2. Approve the proposed expenditure of$10,000 from the Emergency Medical Services budget (Org 450111/Fund 21901) to cover the cost during the week's activities
DISCUSSION/SUMMARY:
State law requires the Public Health Department, Emergency Medical Services (EMS), to operate and maintain an emergency medical services system for the residents of Alameda County. This life saving system provides pre-hospital and hospital emergency medical care by employing emergency medical services professionals, such as emergency medical dispatchers, first responders, emergency medical technicians, paramedics, trauma nurses, physicians, administrators, and others.
By proclaiming the week May 16 - 20,2011 as Emergency Medical Services Week, your Board and the County of Alameda join the statewide effort to acknowledge the services of these professionals. They are the front-line in health care services, working long hours under difficult situations and risking their own safety to care for those with potentially life threatening illnesses and injuries.
EMS has adopted the national theme "Everyday Heroes" as this year's theme to properly honor the services rendered by these professionals. It is estimated that approximately 500 people will be attending the EMS Week events, which include:
EMS Provider Award Banquet EMS for Children event at a local fire station Injury Prevention Provider luncheon.

The EMS Week will cost approximately $7,000 for the Provider Banquet, $1,500 for Children's activities, and $1,500 for the Injury Prevention event. This includes awards and certificates for adults and incentives for children.
FINANCING:
Funding for this event is included in the EMS FY 2010-11 adjusted budget to cover the proposed expenditure of $1 0,000. There is no impact on net County cost and no budgetary adjustment is required.
Very truly yours,
