I would be dead today if I had walked into a meeting and heard people introducing themselves as belonging to every part of the addiction spectrum. Never would I have discovered in such a milieu that what I am and always have been is an alcoholic. By that I'm not talking about anything except that my physical makeup is totally unlike that of my husband who is definitely nonalcoholic. I'm alive today only because I was able to identify with every single person in those first meetings I

attended. No other reason.

The understanding that alcoholism was also a spiritual and psychological disease came later. I am alive today because in a blinding flash of understanding, I finally knew what was wrong with me. When I take alcohol into me, my reactions are those of an alcoholic. And I do believe there is a genetic factor to alcoholism, even though the disease does not fully manifest until alcohol is imbibed.

Sure, I used a painkiller and I used marijuana and I tried cocaine--but I could stop the painkiller and the marijuana and the cocaine at will. I could choose whether or not to take more drugs. If I took

a drink? Choice fled. Today I might have one drink,

tomorrow a dozen. I identified with the people in that first meeting because when they talked about

what alcohol did to them, I knew exactly what they were talking about. And because I knew that,

instead of the one to five years of life the medical profession projected for me, I am still alive today, almost twenty-two years later. And this doesn't mean that people who are still struggling with the question of whether or not they are indeed alcoholic don't belong in closed meetings. But that struggle has to be there—even,

New Book Available (at Intergroup by May 24th)

The first original title released by Alcoholics

Anonymous since Daily Reflections, the book

Our Great Responsibility: A Selection of Bill

W.’s General Service Conference Talks, 1951

–1970 is now available for order in English,

French and Spanish.

Publication of this important volume culminates

years of research and transcription of archived

audio recordings of Bill W. addressing the

General Service Conference. Complementing

the text are more than sixty photographs and

other images from the A.A. Archives — some

never before published. Timeless and timely,

these 16 talks give fresh perspectives on the

A.A. Fellowship in our co-founder’s own words.

"I'm so-and-so and I don't think I am an alcoholic, but the judge ordered me here because I just got my third D.W.I." Hey, that person might be in the right place!

But someone who says, "I am an addict. I have never had problems with alcohol"? When it comes time to talk about what brought us to Alcoholics Anonymous, what experience does that person have that I will be

able to understand as though it were mine? I tried once to sponsor a young woman who attended AA meetings and introduced herself as an alcoholic/addict. She talked briefly to me about what

six beers had done once, and then went on to talk about the horrors of her drug addiction. She was not an alcoholic; she was an addict. Her counselor had

told her to call herself both so that she could attend AA meetings.

When I say I tried to sponsor her, I really did. But I soon realized that I simply did not identify with her

drug experiences. They were not mine. I am an alcoholic, and I identify with alcoholism not with drug

addiction. Sure, the "feelings” may be the same. But they do not spring from the same well, and I find definite differences, sometimes subtle, sometimes

obvious. I feel safe in closed meetings because I know (or should be able to know) that when I talk about the humiliation, the utter degradation, the horrors of

being a woman alcoholic, I am understood at gut

level, that those are share experiences and that nobody will sit in judgment on my past. I will never forget these words of a good friend, a nonalcoholic, who attended an open speaker's meeting. After the speaker had shared the "how it was" part, my friend leaned over and said, "Pretty awful! How can he talk in public about such things! And laugh about them!"

I know that no alcoholic will say that to me about my own sharing. I cannot know for certain that I am understood it depth when the listener has never been

in those spaces. My safety is at stake. Sure, a nonalcoholic addict could say, "Gee, I know how you felt," but I would know that to be untrue. He has not walked that other sloshing mile.

If AA opens to everyone, I suspect AA will go the way of the Washingtonians, who also thought they could be all things to all people. AA has offered sobriety to alcoholics precisely because of its singleness of

purpose. I am an alcoholic who also suffered from brief encounters with drugs. I found my salvation, my coming home, in Alcoholics Anonymous precisely

because its membership consisted of others like me. Dual addiction? Fine, but the primary disease to be

addressed in Alcoholics Anonymous is alcoholism.

The District 7 Corrections Committee is in need of volunteers to

“Carry the Message” into these correctional facilities:

Lee County Jail – Michelle H. (413) 446-0895; The corrections committee currently sponsors meetings in both the facility located on Ortiz Ave. & the downtown jail to both the male & female populations. While meeting days & times vary, the majority of the night time meetings are at 7 pm, on almost every night of the week. Currently, most volunteers attend a meeting twice a month. Due, in part, to our members that are temporary residents returning back “up north”, there is a great NEED to fill meeting times with new volunteers. LCSO has also asked to add meetings, due to increased population; we don’t want to turn them down!

Hendry County Jail – Maggie F. (443) 783-6708; This jail is located 30 miles northeast of Ft Myers, FL in Hendry County. Currently there is a Monday night meeting being taken in weekly to the women, and there are only 2 volunteers on the committee to cover them, so help is badly needed! The male AA volunteers cur-rently bring a meeting on Wednesdays & are in the pro-cess of adding another. Need both males & females willing to fill this need!

Moorehaven Correctional Facility - Mike C. (239-910-5966). Every Tuesday at 6:30 PM, Trusted AA Servants, Carry The Message “behind the walls” of the Moore Haven Correctional Facility (MHCF). About 15 to 20 AA’s incarcerated at MHCF attended the non-mandatory, weekly “Miracles Within” meetings. MHCF is a State of FL medium security prison housing male offenders. The facility is located 70 miles east of Fort Myers, in Glades County. District 7 is responsible for Glades County AA service commitments. If interested in volunteering, please call Mike C.

If the desire is there, please contact the appropriate liaison listed for a committee application, or come to the District 7 Corrections Committee meeting, at 6:30 p.m. every 2nd Tuesday at Dry Palms.

In an effort to have a Big Book in every library in Lee, Hendry and Glades Counties, we asked for

groups to adopt a Library. We had only one response. This has been open now to any

individual and groups that will to adopt a library. The group can purchase the Big Book, 12 & 12,

and our history books to be placed in their reference library. And keep the Where & When's

supplied. We can help you coordinate that.

If you ride the bus, please notice that we have signage on some of them. Text me a picture of the ad. We want to see our success in

advertising.

WINK radio is going to have a few short announcements

following the Memorial Day Holiday. Please let us know if

you hear one.

You can help us by bringing up Tradition 5 in your home group business meeting. Or, you can

just work the last half of Step 12 with us!! Our committee wants to grow more. We meet the 1stTuesday each month at 10:00 at the Intergroup

Office. To find out how you can be of service to others, new comers and long timers....contact

Reggie: 616-902-2368 or email: [email protected].

District 7 Special Events Ad-Hoc Committee Purpose: To spend the overage money from the quarterly in 2017 to benefit the district groups Next meeting June 1st, 9am Lakes Regional Library. Really In Need Of Volunteers!!! In need of suggestions for future events! Please ask your home groups what they would like to have available for our future district events. JOIN THE FAITHFUL FIVERS!!

WHAT’S A FAITHFUL FIVER?

Faithful Fivers are A.A. members who graciously pledge to contribute at least

$5 a month to support our local Intergroup.

Intergroup exists solely on contributions of AA groups and AA members.

As a faithful fiver, your personal contribution will help make our vital services possible. This idea

became popular in parts of the U.S. as we looked for ways to keep the phone lines open for the suffering alcoholics in our community. We re-membered that we wasted much more than $5 each month during our drinking days. Call the

office for details!

THANKS TO OUR FAITHFUL FIVERS!

Marjorie S., LuAnn W., Chris D., Ed C., Albe Q., Wally B., Walter Mc., Heather P., Nancy K.,

Jim C., Rick W., L.D., Sarah O., Beverly H., Jeanne Q., Susan P., Joe Mc.,

Allen C., Colleen P., Diana A., Fred W., Arlene L., David K., Sarge V.

(if you believe you are still a Faithful Fiver but are not on this list, please contact the Intergroup Office; we need to update our List. Thanks!)

THANK YOU

To every group and individual

for your contributions to

Intergroup!

Your contributions help this

office carry the message locally

and extend the hand of AA,

whenever anyone in Lee County

asks for help.

We can’t do it without you!

(Heard at meetings—an old one, but a good one...) One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, “My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. “One is Evil – It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego. “The other is Good – It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith.” The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: “Which wolf wins?” The old Cherokee simply replied, “The one you feed.”

The Spring 2019 Where and When's Are now in the office. Stop by and

pick some up! There were a couple of corrections we’ve found, and a few

new meetings you might not be aware of that can use your support. Check

out the list on this page...

MEETING CHANGES/MISPRINTS: The Sunday night spkr at YANA is now called the Sunday Night Speakeasy meeting. The Tough Love (Tuesday nights Ft. Myers) has disbanded. The ABC Beginners has moved to Gateway Trinity Lutheran Church—11381 Gateway Blvd. “No Cotton” Tuesday nights at AWOL at 5:00 has disbanded. The Language of the Heart in Cape Coral is now Mondays 7:30pm, same location — Faith Presbyterian, 4544 Coronado. The Sunday Night meeting at Dry Palms is now an open Big Book Study. The North Fort Myers Saturday night Speaker meeting is at 368 Herron (2 n’s) for mapping purposes. Monday Living Sober in the Cape is now at 814 Pine Island Rd, Suite 401, no longer at St. Katherine Drexel.

Some folks have had a little difficulty in locating the meetings held at Faith Presbyterian Church in the Cape — the meetings are held in the youth center behind the main buildings. The entrance is off of SE 6th Ct.

Check out the free app—Meeting Guide. It’s a great mobile app that lets

you know the next and nearest A.A. meetings to your location —usable here

and in many places across the country! It’s run by A.A. volunteers; only Intergroups

can enter data, to keep it accurate.
