    Managed Services Airport Link & Northern Busway Case Study Queensland

    Green File Managed Services experience in waste management has to date helped BrisConnections to recycle over 90% of the project waste, including concrete, metal, soil, timber, turbid / stormwater and drilling mud.

    Location: Brisbane, Queensland Client: BrisConnections Services managed: Waste Disposal Value: $2.5 million over contract life (estimation) Project period: January 2009 to December 2012 Referee: Mr Chris Morris +61 7 3226 4223

    Facts and Figures This Brisbane-based project is the largest road infrastructure project in Australian history and is valued at over $4.8 billion. It is multi-faceted and involves construction of the Airport Link toll road, tunnel connecting the airport and Bowen Hills, new Busway station and roundabout upgrade. Since January 2009, Managed Services has successfully partnered with BrisConnections to manage waste disposal at 31 sites, comprising the following approximate amounts:

    92 tonnes of general waste; 6,055 tonnes of recyclables; and 624 tonnes of hazardous waste.

    BrisConnections Service Management Challenge BrisConnections insightfully recognised that attempting to manage their substantial, varied waste services would divert valuable resources away from completing the construction project on time and within budget. The company would be exposed to a multitude of risks, including safety, non-compliance, environmental and financial. In order to minimise these risks, project staff would need effective, efficient service management for standard services, as well as emergency services. Additionally, accurate tracking of costs back to their originating cost centres was deemed crucial for such a historic project.

    Managed Services Smart Solution Managed Services worked closely with BrisConnections during the project planning phase to devise a workable, yet flexible waste management strategy that would account for the constantly evolving nature of construction sites. When construction began, Managed Services smart solution involved: Providing one crane-rated bin in most areas, reducing the need for

    valuable space to be used for housing waste equipment and for site personnel to spend valuable time sorting waste into numerous bins. A majority of construction wastes are taken off-site in a mixed format and sorted into their various components in a state of the art sorting facility.

    Red File By accessing Managed Services immense purchasing power and expertise in resource recovery, it is anticipated that the cost of waste services will be reduced by approximately 20%.

    Managed Services Smart Solution continued Providing one toll-free national number for BrisConnections personnel

    to contact in case of emergency, or to order a waste service with rapid response time;

    Tracking of all waste materials in a consistent monthly report so that waste costs and quantities can be easily monitored and trended;

    Providing experts to interpret requests and determine the most efficient and cost-effective way of handling different waste types;

    Implementing a unique rebate tracking system for waste materials that have value, such as scrap metal. Treating waste as a resource represents significant revenue for the project that may have been overlooked on a traditional construction project;

    Guaranteeing all 21 sub-contractors are properly licensed, insured and in full compliance with local, state and federal legislation;

    Gaining the financial benefits of Managed Services purchasing power, meaning that sites can purchase waste services at discounted prices;

    Auditing and verifying all invoices for accuracy prior to payment; Providing a consolidated monthly invoice detailing all waste services

    charged by all service providers, with automatic allocation to BrisConnections internal accounting cost centres; and

    Constantly liaising with BrisConnections regarding service management and recommend sustainable business improvements (based on site-specific best practice) where appropriate.
