ABSTRACTThere are many problems to be addressed in the current set top box industry. According

to FCC chairman Tom Wheeler, “99 percent of pay-TV customers lease set-top boxes

from their cable, satellite or telco providers. Pay-TV subscribers spend an average of

$231 a year to rent these boxes, because there are few meaningful alternatives”.1

In this whitepaper, we’ll explore and recommend some of the much needed

functionalities that potential consumers desire to add to their set top boxes, and explain

why AireTV TLC has the ability and potential to challenge the current stakeholders in the

digital streaming box industry. Our goal is to combine smart home technologies and

digital streaming box technologies to create an integrated solution to provide unlimited

entertainment content to digital streaming box users, assist senior citizens to better

communicate with their family and loved ones and to maximize the utility as well as the

potential to generate a profit out of traditional TV sets.

IntroductionIn early February 2016, the FCC has proposed new guidelines that would bring some

much-needed competition to the cable TV set top box market. According to Tom

Wheeler, the Chairman of FCC, 99% of consumers pay something on average to $231 a

year in set top box rental fees, despite much of this dated hardware being worth little to

nothing, because there are few meaningful alternatives. Collectively, the cable industry

pulls in around $20 billion annually in set top box rental fees, which are fairly

consistently increased once or twice a year2.

Based on this data, it is undeniable that people want to access more content than their

average cable services. “Cutting the cord” has become the new market phenomenal.

Corporations like Amazon, Apple and Netflix have started to produce their own over the

top content, thus creating an

enormous market for digital media

players. The potential of this market

is verified by the success of Roku,

Inc. Established in 2002, Roku, Inc

is specialized in producing digital

streaming media boxes. By 2014, in

just 12 years, Roku, Inc has reported

a record sale of 10 million units with

5+ billion hours of content streamed

through their devices3. Following the

success of Roku, Inc. Amazon,

Apple and Google, have all released

their own version of digital

streaming boxes. Although they all

have similar functionalities, it is worth pointing out that these boxes do not share same

content. The biggest selling point for these boxes are the exclusive content they provide

Fremont, CA 94539to their users. In addition, the current digital streaming boxes’ potential has been limited

to only stream entertainment content, a rather wasteful use of the big screen TV when

smart home technologies have been developing rapidly in the past decade.

AireTV – TLC (Tender Loving Care), not only addresses the issues above, but also

provides a smart solution for the problems facing the current OTT box industry. This

whitepaper will present AireTV – TLC’s functionalities and explore why it has the

potential to become the latest answer to the fast growing digital streaming and smart

home technologies.

PROBLEM STATEMENTS

1. The Current Stream Box Industry

The current stream box industry is rather chaotic. There are over 20 different digital

stream boxes in the market and each has their own content libraries. Among the major

digital stream boxes makers,

Apple and Amazon have

developed their own ecosystem

using their massive content

libraries. Nevertheless, because

the competitive nature in the

current steam box industry.

There isn’t one device that

shares most of the available content online (users can’t see Amazon’s content on Apple

TV and vice versa). Users sometimes have to get more than one stream boxes to fulfill

their need to consume all their favorite entertainment products.

Moreover, all stream boxes on the market right now are focused solely in streaming

entertainment content through users’ existing TV set, which fails to utilized the full

potential of TV sets’ big sized screen.

2. The Current Family Structure

We are aging—not just as individuals or communities but as a world. In 2006, almost 500

million people worldwide were 65 and older. By 2030, that total is projected to increase

to 1 billion --- 1 in every 8 of the earth's inhabitants. The most rapid increases in the 65-

and-older population are occurring in developing countries, which will see a jump of 140

percent by 2030.

An aging population is a looming economic and social burden. Traditional family

structures are changing because of it. Longer lives must be planned for. As people live

longer and have fewer children, family structures are transformed, leaving older people

with fewer options for care.

6

This has important implications in terms of providing care to older people. Most older

people today have children, and many have grandchildren and siblings. However, in

countries with very low birth rates, future generations will have few if any siblings. As a

result of this trend and the global trend toward having fewer children, people will have

less familial care and support as they age.

3. The Smart Home Technologies

In the past two decades, our living rooms

have slowly transformed to the display

room of electronic products. The typical

electronics found in an average family

include a TV set, high resolution camera,

inferred remote sensors and receivers,

thermometer and air quality sensors,

window or door magnetic switches

sensors and lots of wires, power cords

Fremont, CA 94539and remote controls, etc. Although the rapid development of artificial intelligence

technologies and machine learning technologies have greatly accelerated the progress of

smart home technologies. It is simply too chaotic to have everything wired up without a

central hub controlling everything in an orderly and systematically fashion. Therefore,

how to configure smart home devices of different brands into a centralized system has

become one of the most important issue that requires a solution.

SOLUTION STATEMENTS1. Integration of Existing Channels

Instead of preinstall games and

designated channels on our

digital streaming boxes, we

decided to make our box into a

product with an Android based

operating system. In contrast

with traditional streaming boxes,

we allow users to choose and

download their own desired

apps and channels through

Google App Store, thus

resolving the problem of having

limited content/channels using

just one type of streaming

boxes. From the product

comparison chart, it is very clear

that AireTV-TLC not only has

all the functionalities provided

by the existing streaming boxes,

but it also offers functions like

making direct video calls,

connecting with almost all types

8

Fremont, CA 94539of motion/security sensors in the market. It is our goal to not only provide a streaming

box with integrated content but to add various functionalities which has the potential

to thoroughly revolutionize the traditional notion of a digital streaming box.

2. Tender, Loving, Care

When first designing this box, we had the idea to make an affordable solution for

seniors around the world to better enjoy the video call technology. We thought about

building a smartphone app to help senior citizens to communicate with their family

and loved ones, but we soon realized that there are too many communication apps in

the market. Our app will get

buried within similar apps and

never get to reach the

population we are trying to

help. Moreover, it came to our

attention that most senior

citizens aren't exactly keen on

cellphones because the small

screen size and the fact it's very

easy to misplace or lose them. So, the idea of implementing smartphone technology

into TV sets came to our mind. Our engineering team has created a set-top box that

turns old TVs into an Android based smart TV which enables users to make video

calls, stream online video content, browse through various Android Apps and

strengthen home monitoring functions.

To make sure that our product is

superior to our competitors,

we've invested enormous amount

of time and resources into

perfect our technologies. At the

moment, our video chat quality

can reach 1080P, way higher

than average video chat apps. In

addition, we have two patents in

9

Fremont, CA 94539noise reduction and voice amplification, which ensure users to communicate clearly

without being too close to their TV.

3. Smart Hub for Smart Home

On top of our streaming and video communication functions, we want to build a

product that is a 100% smart home controlling center. We want our box to transform

the traditional TV set into a smart family gateway with multiple functions, and to use

TV screens as display. We designed our box in a way to be connected to most IOT

temperature detectors, smoke detectors,

and PIR motion sensors for doors and

windows through a simple USB device.

Thus allowing users to monitor different

settings of their homes. Our box is also

designed to connect with smart wearable

health devices and help downloading the

data simultaneously on smart phones

through our Airetalk app. The app

notifies the health information of seniors

to their family members, and it monitors home security. The application will

automatically send alerts to emergency contacts if there are any health emergencies

happen.

CONCLUSION

The three problems we are trying to address are all instrumental issues of different

industries and our society in general. Among the three major issues, we believe the aging

population would be the most important to address. We have never faced such problem

affecting so many people worldwide in the history of human civilization. We believe

there is a tremendous market behind this urgent complication, and we believe our product

can help the seniors to monitor their health issues, connect with the outside world, and

communicate with their family and loved ones with just a few clicks. In addition, we also

believe that our product is an affordable solution for both the digital streaming box

Fremont, CA 94539market and the crowded smart home appliances market. Our goal is to create an

affordable product which brings entertainment, home safety/security, health monitoring

and direct video communication to our consumers while provide a central hub for most

smart home appliances.

With our technology and product, we believe we can make a positive impact to our

society and help making our world a better place.
