Jet Aviation performs first BBJ Split Scimitar Winglets retrofit in Basel

Jet Aviation has reported that its maintenance facility in Basel has successfully concluded its first retrofit installation of Split Scimitar Winglets (SSWs) on a BBJ1. The SSW retrofit was completed with EASA-approved Supplemental Type Certification (STC). Split Scimitar Winglets (SSW) technology is unique in that it builds on the existing Blended Winglet design to provide a range increase of more than two percent, further providing a striking new appearance without increasing the wing span. The retrofit relies on a patented design from Aviation Partners, Inc. (API) that involves adding a new Scimitar-tipped large Ventral Strake, reinforcing the internal wing and winglet structure, and replacing the winglet tips with new aerodynamically shaped Scimitar tips. API is the exclusive provider of SSWs for all BBJ, BBJ 2 and BBJ 3 aircraft.

torical partnership between the two companies. Thanks to this contract, both partners have now established the frame for the supply of high-performance composite materials dedicated to the manufacturing of new generation of aircraft equipment parts. Safran and Toray intend to rein-force their collaboration to meet the challenges of a growing aviation market, creating advanced yet competitive technologies and offering environ-mental protective solutions. World leader of high-performance carbon fiber and composite materi-als, Toray will support international leader Safran with the whole variety of innovative materials and newest technologies developed by the group.

Textron Aviation selects Henkel to pro-vide new material to protect composite aircraft components

Henkel has been selected by aerospace manu-facturer Textron Aviation to provide its new high-impact surfacing film to help protect composite components against lightning strikes. It will be used in the manufacturing of several of its leading turboprop and business jet products. This innova-

tive film adhesive produces a 30% weight saving compared to other surfacing films, is resistant to UV waves and so reducing the need for sanding and reworking before painting, and provides an excellent surface finish, enabling a flawless paint appearance. Textron Aviation is the first aerospace manufacturer to use the new material, which Hen-kel expects to be widely adopted in the industry. Henkel’s surfacing film, LOCTITE EA 9845 LC AERO is a thin epoxy applied to an aircraft’s exterior to protect the composites, filling voids and pin holes. Since composites are non-metallic and cannot dis-sipate energy from lightning strikes, aircraft manu-facturers historically have used a two-step process, first applying the adhesive layer and then adding a layer of copper or aluminum mesh to diffuse energy from lightning. The new technology from Henkel transforms this two-step process into a sin-gle step that integrates the adhesive layer and cop-per mesh into one, ready-to-use film. The surfac-ing material reduces production time, eliminates waste from scrap mesh, and lowers costs.

FL Technics reports growing revenue accom-panied by increasing diversification for 2016

FL Technics, a global provider of one-stop-shop aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul ser-vices, has announced its yearly business review, displaying a stable, over 20 percent growth in revenues as well as continuing service and geo-graphical diversification. Bouncing back from bankruptcy of a major client and a financial back-drop in the year 2015, FL Technics has managed to maintain the rise in revenue numbers over the year 2016, as well as trigger a jump in net profit (from a loss of €11m (US$11.66m) in 2015 to a profit of almost €3m (US$3.18m) in 2016). The numbers were mainly affected by the company’s growing operations in Asia Pacific, new clientele, as well as LEAN business process optimization. In 2016, FL Technics opened a representative of-fice in Bangkok, Thailand and a new hangar in Jakarta, Indonesia. Increasing presence resulted in an upward trend of revenue from the region, which grew on average four times year-on-year. The company also continued the diversification of its client and service portfolio.

HAECO posts 2016 final results

The HAECO Group reported an attributable prof-it of HK$975m in 2016. The profit included a gain of HK$805m on disposal of the interest of Hong Kong Aero Engine Services Limited (HAESL) in Singapore Aero Engine Services Limited (SAESL) and an impairment charge of HK$285m in re-spect of the goodwill recorded on the acquisition of TIMCO Aviation Services (TIMCO). The HAECO Group’s 2015 attributable profit was HK$464m. Disregarding the gain on disposal in 2016 and impairment charges in both years, the HAECO Group’s 2016 attributable profit was HK$516m, 8.2% higher than in 2015. HAECO USA Hold-ings, (HAECO Americas) recorded a higher loss in 2016. This principally reflected losses on some seat contracts and a reduction in the number of seats sold and in cabin integration work. Air-frame services results improved, with more man hours having been sold, but the benefit of this was offset in part by costs incurred with a view to improving efficiency and work flow. (US$1.00 = HK$7.77 at time of publication.)

Lufthansa Group reports good results for 2016

The Lufthansa Group generated revenues of €31.7bn in 2016, a decline of 1.2% on the prior-year result. Adjusted EBIT for the year amounted to €1.7bn, a decline of 3.6%. This means that, as expected, earnings before strike costs of €100m came in at the previous year’s level. The Adjusted

EBIT margin for 2016 was 5.5%, a decline of 0.2 percentage-points.EBIT for the year amounted to €2.3bn, a significant improvement of €599m on 2015. The difference between the EBIT and Adjusted EBIT is largely at-tributable to the new collective labor agreement concluded between Lufthansa and its flight attend-ants’ union, UFO. The agreed switch from a defined benefit in a defined contribution pension system had a €652m positive impact on EBIT for the year, which is not included in the Adjusted EBIT. But, even without this non-recurring item, the Lufthan-sa Group further enhanced its financial strength in 2016, achieving a further 2.5% reduction in its unit costs excluding fuel and currency effects. Fraport scores double win in Brazilian air-ports privatization

During Brazil’s third round of airport privatizations decided at a public auction in Sao Paulo, Fraport AG scored a double win by placing the top bids of 1,505.75m Reais about €446.81m (US$482.60m) for Fortaleza Airport and 382.01m Reais about €113.36m (US$122.40m) for Porto Alegre Airport. As a result, Fraport emerged victorious against strong international competition vying for the two Brazilian airports currently operated by Bra-zil’s state-owned Infraero. Along with the conces-sion price, Fraport will pay a fixed fee amounting to five-percent of the airport’s annual revenue. The concession will run for 30 years at Fortaleza and for 25 years at Porto Alegre. Currently hold-ing a 100% stake, Fraport will be the sole owner and participant of these concessions. Thus, the concessions and future results will be fully consol-idated at the Fraport Group level. Following the takeover of the concessions, Fraport AG expects an additional accumulated EBITDA at the Group level resulting from the two airports of around €350m (US$370m) during the first five years, and an accumulated negative contribution to the Group result ranging from the mid-to-high dou-ble-digit million euros. Due to the takeover of the concessions and the mandatory capital expendi-ture, Fraport AG expects an increase in Group net debt by up to around €700m (US$740m) in the first five years.

GE Aviation has reported the delivery of the new flight management software Update 13 (U13) for the Boeing 737 MAX. The new software will be standard fit for all 737 MAX production air-planes. “The 737 MAX flight management sys-tem is helping operators to reduce costs, while improving performance as it relates to on-time arrivals and less fuel, emissions and noise,” said Alan Caslavka, President of Avionics for GE Avia-tion. “We’ve worked with Boeing to include new state-of-the-art technologies on the 737 MAX and look forward to the entry into service.” GE Aviation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certified flight management system (FMS) soft-ware U13, will be the standard fit for all 737 pro-duction airplanes, beginning with the 737 MAX entry into service in 2017, and will be available for in-service installation across 737 fleets.

Rockwell Collins recently deployed the first touchless T-Series bag drop in the United King-dom (UK) at London Luton Airport. The new system streamlines and simplifies the baggage check-in process. The Luton self-service bag drop from Rockwell Collins employs a two-step approach. Passengers first use their reference number to print a boarding card and/or weigh their bag and print a tag. Once tagged, the lug-gage is taken to the self-service kiosk and the bag is automatically dispatched. Already in use at several airports around the world, the system has won praise from both customers and staff for improving the passenger experience and sig-nificantly improving processing speeds.

Bombardier Business Aircraft’s Ka-band high-speed Internet system was certified by the Euro-pean Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for retrofit on all Bombardier Global aircraft models. The Ka-band high-speed internet system lets passen-gers on board Global aircraft browse the Inter-net, stream online media or stage a videoconfer-ence as quickly and as effortlessly as they would in their home or office. Bombardier’s Ka-band is offered as an option on new Global aircraft or as an upgrade on all in-service Global aircraft models at the company’s extensive network of service centers.

He began as a technician in Duncan’s Cabinet Shop and progressed to Interior Team Leader and Project Manager. • Zela Aviation has reported that Michael Assariotis has joined their team. Mr. Assa-riotis will focus on ACMI activity as well as aviation consulting. His professional career spans over 15 years between New York, London, Greece and Cyprus and the posi-tions that compose his employment history exposed him to many key facets of the avia-tion industry, making him knowledgeable in airline and airport operations, aviation se-curity and safety, quality customer service and particularly airline management, sales and marketing.

the collective wage agreement formed one part of the considerations. The new agreement has made a formal acceptance of the arbitration rec-ommendations unnecessary. Likewise, Lufthansa will not be pursuing a previously announced plan to staff 40 newly acquired aircraft outside the group-wide collective bargaining agreement (KTV). Over the next months, the details of the various collective bargaining agreements will have to be worked out. The agreement provides a one-off balance-sheet reduction through the conversion of the pension schemes. In return for the cost-reducing elements of the agree-ment, 325 aircraft will be crewed in the current KTV flight operations, in stages, by 2022. This will make it possible for Lufthansa to hire trainee pi-lots again in the coming years and create career prospects for pilots, with a large number of posi-tions for prospective captains. A reciprocal agree-ment to refrain from industrial action for the du-ration of the talks has already been reached, and is set to be formalized in a collective bargaining agreement that will last until 2022.

Component Control has released that ATS Avia-tion Services, a division of Advanced Technol-ogy Services (ATS), an equipment maintenance, industrial parts, and IT managed services pro-vider, has chosen Quantum Control MRO and Logistics software to enhance its agility and cus-tomer responsiveness. “Quantum’s ease of use, flexibility and scalability will enable ATS Aviation Services to adapt quickly to new customers and their changing needs, as well as provide tailored solutions for specific customer requirements,” said Wayne Trzeciak, Aviation Parts and Logistics Manager.

Airbus is setting up a greenfield training facility at Aerocity, New Delhi, to support India’s grow-ing need for Airbus aircraft pilots and mainte-nance engineers. The ground-breaking for the Airbus India Training Centre was performed by P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju, Hon’ble Union Minister of Civil Aviation and Tom Enders, CEO, Airbus in the presence of Jayant Sinha, Hon’ble Minister of State for Civil Aviation. India is the fastest grow-ing domestic aviation market in the world and is expected to continue to grow at an annualised 9.3% over the next 20 years, outpacing the world average of 4.6%. The number of trips per capita in India is expected to quadruple by 2035 due to a combination of economic and demographic factors. To cater to this huge demand, Airbus forecasts a requirement for at least 1,600 new passenger and freighter aircraft by 2035. The consequent increase in Indian in-service aircraft fleet will lead to an accompanying need for over 24,000 new pilots and maintenance engineers.
