Thank you to everyone who has made a gift or pledge commitment to our Diocesan Services Appeal so far.

We have a good start to our DSA drive this year. As of 3/15/2019, 54 parishioners have donated $14,605.00.00, over 16.3% of our goal. If you haven’t already, please remember to fill our your pledge form and put it in the collection basket or drop it off at the parish office during the week. Or you may submit your gift online at www.dioceseoflansing.org/dsa.

Our gifts to DSA enable our diocese to provide services crucial to our parish. The programs and services funded by DSA offer direct assistance to individuals and families, and to parishes, schools, and Catholic Charities agencies. Evangelization occurs through dozens of ongoing ministries made possible by our contributions to DSA.

St. Vincent de Paul Store Closure

To minimize undue exposure to our 100+ volunteers, staff and custom-ers, our store will tentatively be closed Monday March 16, 2020 through Saturday April 4, 2020.

We are sorry for any inconvenience.

We will continue to serve clients seeking assistance by calling 989-292-7057.

ST. JOSEPH CATHOLIC CHURCH ST. JOHNS, MICHIGAN

WE ARE ALL EVANGELIZERS (and whatever else is on Deacon Eric’s mind)

Remember that cold I told you about last week? You know, the one I joking-ly said I brought back from Florida along with four days of springlike weather for my friends in St. Johns? Well, it turns out that the cold also included a double-ear infection and one perforated eardrum. I wish I could say it came with no extra charge, but by the end of the week I had to call Fr. Mike and tell him I couldn’t meet my preaching commitment last weekend.

I knew that he was going to be announcing some temporary preventative-health measures, due to the COVID-19 outbreak (i.e. no handshaking at Sign of Peace, no presentation of the Precious Blood). I figured that even if I powered through and assisted at a couple Masses, the visual of me cough-ing my way through the Gospel and homily, would be sending a mixed mes-sage. At that point of Mass, I don’t want to be spreading anything more than the Good News of Christ.

Several of you saw me during the week, but I didn’t really do a whole lot out-side of my “BE Attitudes” series and attend two funerals. In addition, my wife’s voice suddenly disappeared for 48 hours, so for a couple days, we made for quite a show trying to communicate with each other - she couldn’t talk and I couldn’t hear We probably looked like an amateur “Mime and Mime-ette” during “Open-Mic Night” down at the corner bar and grill.

Those days got me thinking about physical or health challenges (like hear-ing loss) so many people face as a part of their lives every day. Many read-ing this probably deal with it personally or through someone close to them. Though I probably would not be considered a poster boy for men’s health, to this point in my life the Lord has certainly blessed me. Along with this COVID-19 outbreak, there are millions of people who need prayer to help them cope with current health issues in their lives. Thankfully, there’s no lim-it on our prayer focus - we can pray for all who require help.

This pandemic screams out to us about the urgency to pray more. Lent is a time already geared toward more prayer, alms-giving and fasting. The need and the means to fulfill that need are right before us - a hand-in-glove situa-tion. For a lot of people, current circumstances have also given us more time - schools and some businesses are closed for a couple weeks. Let’s use that time to enhance our Lenten actions.

Our kids and grand-kids will definitely have unexpected time on their hands. Temperatures are supposed to hit 50 degrees several days this week - fall-like conditions that invite yard work. Elderly neighbors, grandparents or those with physical challenges would definitely appreciate rakers and shrub-trimmers. Let’s take the health lemons we have been served and make some lemonade.

From the Desk of Deacon Marv

For protection against contracting

and spreading the Coronavirus, ex-

perts recommend that we wash our

hands vigorously with soap and

water for at least 20 seconds. But

how can we know when the 20

second time frame is up? One

piece of advice is to sing the tradi-

tional “Happy Birthday to You”

song twice. Perhaps a better way

to time the hand washing is to say

a prayer instead. Praying the “Our

Father” at a normal pace also goes

about 20 seconds It’s even better if

we focus on the meaning of the

words as we pray, and petition “

Our Father” to lay His healing

hand on all those suffering with this

devastating virus.

Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament

“Our hours of adoration will be

special hours of reparation for sins,

and intercession for the needs of the

whole world, exposing the sin-sick

and suffering humanity to the heal-

ing, sustaining and transforming

rays of Jesus, radiating from the Eu-

charist.”

St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta

With most activities cancelled, we

may find ourselves with some extra

time this Lent. Jesus is waiting for

us in the tabernacle of our church,

to listen to our concerns and to

strengthen us in our times of fear.

We have times available for sched-

uled monthly Holy Hours and space

on our sub list. Please call/text 989-

292-2072 if you are interested or

have questions.

We intend to begin construction soon after Easter 2020 and complete the work within the following 4 to 5 months.

Work for this project will be completed under the direction and contract of a general contractor.
