Upon the coming of Christmas, we are all reminded of the childhood magic that once filled the air as the season drew near; fresh
fallen snow, jingling bells, and the children all waiting anxiously for Saint Nicholas to arrive.
While the magic was once vivid and bright, each year it has diminished slightly, leaving
behind a darker side of Christmas and bringing forth dismal truths of our cherished
traditions.

Artist Statement I am inspired by the magic a child’s imagina/on can bring to this world. Year aWer year
as I mature I see that mysterious curiosity of childhood slowly fade away leaving behind the dismal reality of /me. ShiWs in /me influence my explora/on of place and
space.
In my artwork, I enjoy the simple act of applying ink to paper or an etching tool to zinc to create a story made from the ever-‐bending, ever-‐moving lines. The lines alone,
whether simple or intricate, can push a narra/ve into a different /me, different place, or even a different world altogether.
Recently, I have used techniques from my background in printmaking to create vivid
figura/ve and non-‐figura/ve images. In my current work I integrate thought-‐provoking narra/ves with simple lines and white planes of nega/ve space. I have been inspired by a few ar/sts from the “Golden Age of Illustra/on,” Edmund Dulac, Arthur Rackham, and Kay Nielsen among others. They devoted their ar/s/c skills and craWsmanship to
storytelling through illustra/on, a trait I inves/gate in every piece I create.
