• With a goal of mapping out the new American territory West of the Mississippi, Merriwether Lewis and William Clark would depart in 1804, under the name the Corps of Discovery, seeking to accomplish a number of goals for Jefferson:

o Discover a waterway linking traversing the entire continent East to Westo Map the new territory for the United Stateso Document any new plants or animalso Establish trade relations with the Native Americas

• The Embargo Act of 1807 was a general Embargo (refusal to trade) with both France and Britain during the Napoleonic Wars

o American shipping would constantly be attacked and robbed by both French and British shipso Impressment: The British practice of attacking American ships and forcing alleged British deserters or American sailors into the British navyo Chesapeake-Leopard Affair: American warship Chesapeake is attacked off the coast of Virginia by the British Leopard, with four sailors being taken (and one being hanged)o Widespread calls for war against the European powers in order to preserve American pride

• The Embargo Act was seen as a form of “economic warfare” by Jefferson, who sought to avoid military conflict
