If we did an experiment?

And we place one plant by the window and another plant in the closet.

Which plant would grow better?

Why? What does it need?

Why?

What are fossil fuels?

Formed hundred of million of years ago.

Dead plants and animals over millions of years are converted to oil, coal, and natural gas.

What are these products use for ?

AIM

Is energy created or destroyed?

So where did the energy come from that is currently in today’s fossil fuels?

From the dead plants and animals

Where did they get their energy?

From the sun…. So …

AIM

… So …

today’s fossil fuels are stored chemical energy created hundreds of millions of years ago … from the energy of the sun!

AIM

: What are F

How are fossil fuels created …

They are created like diamonds.

Mound and mounds of dead plants and animals are sedimented under layers of rock, mud, silt.

This forms huge temperatures and pressure which transform the ancient carbon material into fossil fuels.

Where do plants get energy?

From Photosynthesis. From the sun.

But how can we say that the dead animals also contributed to the formation of fossil fuels. Animal don’t do photosynthesis!

Did ancient animals eat other dinosaurs who originally got their energy from plants.

Where did that energy (of those plants) originally come from? THE SUN!

Page 15: AIM: What are fossil fuels? Explain how the chemical energy contained in fossil fuels originally came from ancient plants and the sun Explain how the

Fossil Fuels contain energy that was originally derived from the sun. These fossil fuels are decomposed animals and plants which have been compacted under tremendous heat and pressure for thousands of years.

What does combustion mean?

Fossil fuels burn by the process of combustion.

In short, when something burns in the presence of oxygen, we say it combusts.
